Korean Beef Bowl

Tastes like Korean BBQ and is on your dinner table in just 15 min start to finish! It doesn’t get any easier than this!
This is truly one of the easiest recipes I have ever made. The cooking process itself takes just about 10-15 minutes, and if you have some leftover cooked rice, you’ll have dinner on the table before you know it.
Now this recipe is a twist on the traditional Korean dish, bulgogi, but it’s a cheater version using ground beef instead of thin slices of sirloin, making this an incredibly budget-friendly breakfast/lunch/dinner situation.
Bulgogi is also marinated overnight to enhance its flavors and tenderness but with this ground beef version, you can have the same flavors in 15 minutes or less.
TOOLS FOR THIS RECIPE
DO I HAVE TO USE GROUND BEEF?
Not at all! Ground pork or ground turkey can be used instead of ground beef.
IS THIS FREEZER-FRIENDLY?
Yes! You can freeze the leftovers in individual freezer bags, thaw overnight, and reheat on the stovetop (adding a tablespoon of water as needed).
Korean Beef Bowl
Ingredients
- ¼ cup brown sugar, packed
- ¼ cup reduced sodium soy sauce
- 2 teaspoons sesame oil
- ½ teaspoon crushed red-pepper flakes, or more to taste
- ¼ teaspoon ground ginger
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 pound ground beef
- 2 green onions, thinly sliced
- ¼ teaspoon sesame seeds
Instructions
- In a small bowl, whisk together brown sugar, soy sauce, sesame oil, red pepper flakes and ginger.
- Heat vegetable oil in a large cast iron skillet over medium high heat. Add garlic and cook, stirring constantly, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add ground beef and cook until browned, about 3-5 minutes, making sure to crumble the beef as it cooks; drain excess fat.
- Stir in soy sauce mixture and green onions until well combined, allowing to simmer until heated through, about 2 minutes.
- Serve immediately, garnished with green onion and sesame seeds, if desired.

Another great recipe to add to the rotation. Thanks for sharing.
I have made this 2 times now. 1 time with ground beef and once with shaved steak. It is excellent both ways. If you like sauce make 1.5 times the sauce or double it. I also use fresh grated ginger instead of the ground. I served this was rice and sauted cabbage, carrots and broccoli. The meat is also great in ramen. This is not in the rotation in my house.
So awesome and so delicious!!! I added frozen veggies too
This recipe is a perfect blend of flavors. I did add about 1/2 cup of broth to the sauce when added and simmered the beef (grass fed so less fat) slowly for about an hour and until liquid absorbed and thickened. I added the green onions and also some cilantro at the end. Very very good and soooooo easy.
I made this!! Insanely easy and yummy.
This dish is on regular rotation in our house. It’s one that EVERYONE loves. We make a veg heavy toppings bar and let everyone build their own bowl. Julienne carrots, cucumber salad, green onion, edamame, red pepper, roasted broccoli, Asian cabbage slaw, siracha mayo and crispy fried onion and wonton strips. Fast, healthy and delicious. Thank you Chungah!
Came out perfect! Will admit did not use measurements but still tasted yummy! Even added a fried egg on top for a lul razzle dazzle! Easy ingredients too as I had everything in my pantry and stored the rest in tupperware! Me and my roomie thank you for this yummy meal!
Love this recipe! I have been making it for years as rice bowls and serving with cole slaw, pickled red onions and cubed cucumbers. Have made it for friends too and they have all asked for the recipe! I usually double the sauce amount but not the sugar amount.
What a wonderful go to recipe.
I cook every night and this is one I end up failing on at least 3 times a month.
The family always loves it.
And you can use this same
Sauce on several dishes.
Really awesome and grateful to the chef.
Love this recipe! I was out of ground beef, so, I made it with shredded beef. Still delicious! Taking a little for lunch today.
Love this recipe – right amount of flavour!
Fantastic. Better than paying for takeout. I love knowing the ingredients in my food, too.
Thank you!
I make this recipe pretty regularly. I use ground turkey, less brown sugar and leave out the pepper flakes (kids). With a side of either roasted broccoli or brussel sprouts. My 4 year old requests it all the time! It’s a family favorite.
Super easy and super delicious! I added baby spinach and cut down the chili flakes and my three teens loved it over steamed basmati rice. Quick prep and a great recipe for my teens to easily make any night of the week. Will definitely be adding to my weekly rotation.
Been making this for years both my teenage boys love it! So easy and delicious. Thanks for providing me with a recipe that my kids request all the time and will remember for years to come.
I also diced an onion and cooked with beef. Taste good.
Thank you
This is pretty much in our weekly rotation!! Delish!!
I’ve made this many times, it’s a great simple recipe-easy to turn out in a half an hour. The only change I make is to halve the sugar. I serve it with optional garnishes of grated carrots, diced cucumbers, slivered scallions, kimchi, diced avocado, sriracha, and sesame seeds. My peeps request it when I haven’t made it in a while. Thanks for the well-written recipe.
Love this recipe, have made it for years. Wanted to come here to ensure it continues on
Super easy and FAST to make with ingredients I’d say most people would have in their kitchen. I put it over riced cauliflower and broccoli….delicious!
Definitely a new favorite in the recipe book.
This was a 10/10 for everyone in my home, including a culinary student and an Asian. (Although the Asian added a fried egg and some kimchi). I added some stir fried cabbage, carrot & broccoli. Even w low sodium soy sauce it was a little salty for me but I’m sensitive to salt. My culinary expert said to save this one, no need to ever try another recipe for this dish!
This is my go to recipe for a quick tasty meal, and easily doubled for company. I normally use ground pork, and Korean red pepper from the Asian market, and additional green onion.
This is delicious. FYI I added a bit of fresh minced ginger as well as a bit of beef bouillon to make it taste richer.
I have used this recipe for years on All kinds of meats. Love love love the marinade❣️❣️❣️
I add finely chopped carrot and water chestnuts. Soo good. My kids love it over Angel hair pasta.
One of our family favorites!! We roast broccoli in the air fry to serve with it. Soooo yummy!!!
I made this last night and my dad absolutely loved it. We are a japanese family and I’m 12 years old tying to help my family out. This was easy to make and very delicious but the sauce was too strong I reccommend using less soy sauce.
I used broccoli instead of green onions. Loved it!!
First, let me start with I have some very picky eaters, and they just loved this. I made double the meant and three times the sauce as another commenter suggested. Amazing.
We absolutely love this recipe. I like to serve it over rice and topped with sliced cucumbers and a little shredded lettuce for freshness. If I have fresh ginger, I will use a piece of that minced up instead of the dry
Delicious! And even better when made with chopped pork instead of the ground beef.
We really liked this. I added a tbs. of Gochujang because we like our Bulgogi to have just a little kick. Otherwise I followed it to the last letter and it was delicious. It’s not often that a first time recipe makes it into our rotation after one try with no further ‘monkeying’ by me.
Got a quickie Bibimbap or Dolsot Bibimbap recipe I can try?
My family loves this meal! We had 1/2 bag of broccoli slaw to the sauce, too.
Thank you so much for sharing this recipe! It is so easy to make and the perfect answer when you have 1 lb of meat. The dish is full of flavor and tastes like, “more please!”
This is one of my favorite recipes! I make it every other week.
This was one of my kids favorite recipes while they were growling up. I sometimes use half the amount of brown sugar. So quick.
Perfect for weeknight dinner in a rush.
I altered mine a bit though by adding a few Tbs Worcestershire sauce bc I didn’t have all of the 1/4 cup of soy sauce. Still tasted delicious. I doubled the recipe bc I had 2lbs ground beef. The sesame oil is key! I added fresh ginger with the garlic bc I had some to use up and it was awesome. Also added finely diced bell pepper and half a bag of spinach leaves bc I had those to use up. It really came out fantastic. Will absolutely make again.
Can you use beef stew meat?
So flipping good! It’s my youngest’s absolute favorite!!
This is delicious. I added chopped jalepeno peppers for added spice
So good and a lot of flavor and easy to make!
Flavorful and amazingly quick and simple to make. We served this with rice garnished with julienned cucumbers and carrots. We also made lettuce wraps with the beef. So good!
This recipe is delicious, it will become one of our bi-weekly recipes. Thank you for sharing!
So delicious! A favorite of our family. Thank you for the recipe!
We make this weekly! Love how flexible the recipe is. We make a double batch so we have leftovers for kids’ lunches the next day. It is enjoyed by adults, teens, younger kids and my toddler. Toss in grated apple or asian pear and carrots, edamame or green peas, whatever you have on hand or as is. Serve with broccoli or fine green beans, or kimchi or banchan if you have it and want it. We also always serve with roasted seaweed packets, a little salty and sesame oil and nice crunch. No its not bulgogi but when you’re craving it on a weeknight, this is pretty good!
10 out of 10 wonderful, I agree on doubling the sauce amount!
❤️❤️❤️ I love this it’s so delicious! ☺️
Really yummy! I mixed the sauce in with the beef and cooked them together. Saves one bowl to clean and comes out tasty. I added like 1 tbsp of gochujang which was perfect. Loved it. Tastes just as good as regular bulgolgi without having to wait for it to marinate
I’ve been making this for years and everyone I make it for loves it. It’s so simple, delicious, and filling.
Delicious!! I didn’t have any sesame oil so I did what someone else did and added a little peanut butter. I also didn’t have the green onions. I sliced carrots and zucchini into ribbon slices and cooked until soft and added to dish for some veggies. So good!!
So darn tasty and an easy fast one too. Can you freeze the dish? Thinking to try it, but curious if you have?
This recipe is not only easy but my family says it’s fantastic.
So delicious! Thanks for a great recipe
Easy. Fast. Damn delicious . I’ve never tried it with the seeds because I don’t ever have them, but it tastes just as great without them. However, if you’re like me and like your sauces to be extra saucy, I strongly recommend doubling everything except the beef. I believe this makes a better beef-to-sauce ratio. Otherwise, perfect!
Agreed, I always make double the sauce when I make this! I also steam some veggies (broccoli, carrots, pepper, whatever I have on hand). I’ve made it many times and it’s always delicious!
I’ve made this recipe a number of times, and we never get tired of it. It’s delicious and so easy. I usually have all ingredients on hand. Sometimes I make modifications, but it’s perfect as is.
We serve with a fried egg on top and shredded carrots and sliced cucumbers. So good!!! This had become on of our go to’s!!!
Everyone loves this meal!
I always add pre-steamed fresh broccoli to this…it’s a great way to add veggies and the broccoli soaks up the sauce like a sponge. So good!
This recipe is DELICIOUS! Was honestly impressed by how easily it came together. I added diced red bell pepper and used ground turkey, 10/10 recipe for me. Thank you!
Way too sweet for me. Suggestions on lessening the sweetness when I serve? Add more pepper flakes maybe?
We use about half the amount of sugar the recipe calls for. Just a touch of sweetness. We prefer it this way.
Such a go to! We add way more red pepper flakes than what it calls for. So good
This is one of my go-to dishes for feeding my family. I make minor adjustments like leaving out the red pepper flakes and just adding sriracha to my bowl after, since I’m feeding kids. I also leave out the sesame seeds if i have none around and use fresh ginger since i usually keep some frozen. Sometimes we eat kimchee with it. I also sautee bok choy and/or steam broccoli to go with it. Delicious and so versatile. Great recipe and so simple…thanks so much!!
Absolutely love making this dish! Quick and easy!
This recipe is so delicious, and savory it has very bold flavors this is by far one of the best dishes I’ve had in a extremely long time. The recipe is so simple to make, and the ingredients for the recipe isn’t pricey at all. I went to Walmart for my ingredients. This recipe is one of my regular recipes and favorites. I try and make it once a week
I absolutely love this recipe! I always double the sauce-to-meat ratio because it’s so good! Definitely an easy go to recipe for our household 🙂
So easy and so good!
We love this recipe! Simple and quick. I dial down the amount of sugar as it is too sweet for my liking. It’s a staple.
Delicious! My kids love this. We serve it wit rice or quinoa and veggies. I’m wondering if anyone’s tried this over frozen meatballs in the crockpot?
Great idea!
Dang good. Next time, howevert, I’m going to add some wateer dhestnuts for a change of texture.
I made this recipe for my boyfriend and he is obsessed with it. He asks me to make it every week, he even wants it for lunch AND dinner. Thank you for this staple recipe!
I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve made this! It’s quick, easy, delicious and uses ingredients I almost always have in hand. I usually double the recipe to be sure there are some yummy leftovers!
This is so good and easy. Make it. Yum.
Fabulous! Quick and easy and especially delicious!
This is our family favorite
This is the LEGIT go to meal because of how quick and freakin scrumptious it is. I prefer using ground bison over ground beef. If you are hungry and don’t want fast food or don’t wanna wait 45 in for take out, MAKE THIS!!!
This is a family favorite! It’s an easy weeknight meal that make often.
I’ve been making this for awhile now, and it’s so yummy and EASY!
Pure comfort food on a cool Fall evening.
I’ve been adding in extra finely shredded veggies such as bagged cabbage slaw (so easy!) just to make it less rice heavy,
fast easy and delicious, perfect weeknight dinner
I love this recipe, even my picky eaters love this. So quick and easy. When I don’t have sesame oil on hand, I sub in some peanut butter instead and it’s still delicious
Everyone in my family of 5 loves this, and that’s a big deal! We’ve been making it at least once a month for years. It’s fast, easy, and delicious!
10/10, have made 4 or 5 times now with a vegan ground beef substitute.
Pretty quick and tasty. The kids liked it too. Maybe mention in recipe to make rice and serve with beef over rice. Seems obvious I know, but I’m a dude and forgot about the rice and had to scramble to make in time for supper. Thanks!
This has been a fav go to for a quick and delish meal for years!
Thank you so for this recipe!!
Great recipe and, as advertised, EASY!
This is in the rotation as one of my staples, served on top of white rice w a side of sea salted edamame.
It’s good. I added more for a little more pronounced flavor. 1 tbsp hoisin sauce, 1.5 tbsp rice vinegar 1tbsp Sriracha (only because I love it). It’s good either way. A nice, quick, filling dinner on a busy work night. It’s the one dish no one complains about
I love this dish! I’ve made it many times and love it. Always some leftovers as there are just two of us and it freezes beautifully. I never thought about taking it camping. Next year for sure.
Fast, easy and delicious !
Is this something that can be made and frozen (just the meat/sauce)? I think this would be a great meal camping but like to precook as much as possible so I don’t spent time cooking while on vacation.
I always make more sauce than recipe calls for. I serve the bowls with sliced avocado, sriacha mayo and cilantro. Last night i added chow mein noodles and it added a bit of crunch, yummy!
Haven’t made this yet as I’m wondering what I could sub for brown sugar. I can’t do refined sugar. It looks amazing though.
I’ve used stevia and it’s just as delicious!!
I made this last night and I couldn’t believe how quick, easy and tasty it was! Such simple ingredients but great flavor, and an excellent option for busy weeknights. Served it over rice with a side of roasted broccoli and it was a hit all around. Thank you for another terrific recipe!
Pinterest has been my “cook book” for years now but this is the 1st time I’ve ever commented on a recipe. I feel I owe it to you because I’ve made this dish at least 20 times because it’s so darn good! My family requests it all the time. I’ve made it just as your recipe states, and sometimes I get fancy and add veggies like shredded carrot, edamame, red bell pepper, or shredded cabbage. Thank you for sharing this recipe with all of us!
One of my favorite recipes! Thank you for sharing 🙂
My daughter has a sesame allergy (and we loooove Korean food – my husband is Korean!). Any substitute ideas? I usually just leave it out, but hoping for other ideas!
Use olive oil! I ran out of sesame oil when I made this one night and substituted with EVOL. Still tastes great!
Hey my son has a sesame allergy as well. I have started using “House of Tsang stir-fry oil” as a substitute. It isn’t perfect but it will definitely give you a little more flavor than a standard cooking oil. Hope this helps!
I have been making this for years. It’s a family favorite. Came here today to print it out for a friend and drop it in the mail. He’s not into the net.
This recipe is incredibly easy to make, and so YUMMY! Thanks for the recipe!
Made this for the first time tonight. Absolutely delicious and will make again. It’s salty, sweet, spicy perfection!
One of our very favorites! I love how easy this recipe is and how tasty the sweet and salty and spicy are together. We like to add a bag of Asian veggies served in the same bowl as the beef and rice to make it a complete meal. I love doubling the recipe so that we have leftovers because it reheats really well.
Does the nutrients and calories include the rice?
Is it one cup per serving?
This was f*in delicious. This is the authentic taste i craved compared to the westernized stuff you get sold in restaurants in europe.
love it.
So damn delicious
Excellent I make this almost weekly.
please delete this comment. I thought I was reviewing a totally difference recipe. Your recipe for Korean beef is absolutely wonderful and one of our favorite dishes!!!
So I was looking for a simple, quick and easy recipe that my kids would eat for dinner. This recipe was super simple and really good. You know its going to be a hit when my son said wow, this looks fancy then took his phone out and took a photo of the dish!. He rated it 9.5 out of 10! This is a win in my books, will keep this on rotation!. I served mine with cooked broccoli and a fried egg on top.
It was easy, and it was surprisingly yummy.
This was a very easy and delicious meal to prepare. I added some Asian vegetables and it added the extra texture and flavors we enjoyed! Thank you for sharing!
I make this almost every week. So easy, minimal ingredients and quick.
Sooo good! Love mixing broccoli in with the beef and serving over rice!
It’s in the weekly rotation. Delish!!!
I serve it with broccoli. Great, easy, inexpensive, quick & tasty. Thank you!
Doubled the sauce, added thawed frozen broccoli and poured over jasmine rice. Delish, easy, quick and economical!
My wife likes the flavor, but the ground beef part wasn’t her thing .
I doubled the red pepper flakes and still thought it could use a little more Heat. Next time I’ll probably use a bit less sugar and a bit more red pepper to dial it in to my taste.
Easy and cheap when you butcher a steer, another way to use that ground!
Easy and tasty recipe! My son and daughter love it!
This is the easiest and most delicious dish! It literally takes the amount of time that the rice cooks in the instant pot. Made it for lunch yesterday – homeschool hot lunch. Oh, yeah! Thank you for this amazing recipe!!!
I add some Panko breadcrumbs and an egg and make these into meatballs. I double the recipe and freeze half. It’s one of my 3 year old’s favorite meals, and mine too! This is a delicious recipe!
Excellent. We make it just about once a week now.
Amazing recipe!!! This is my second time making it. I use Kobe beef. Love it!!!
We love this recipe so much! I’ve made it so many times over the past few years for my family. I often sub sriracha for the red chili flakes, and sometimes use ground turkey instead of ground beef. Thanks for the great recipe!
We LOVE this recipe, either as is or topped with some local jalapeño kimchi! I’m wondering if you think the cooked ground beef mixture would freeze well for reheating? 32 weeks pregnant over here and looking to stock the freezer with as many of our go-to meals as I can! I usually make everything fresh, especially when it’s as quick as this recipe, but if there was an occasion to try to turn this into a freezer meal this seems like it! Any input appreciated 🙂
Such a quick and easy recipe to make on a Monday! We made bowls with sushi rice, shaved carrot, kimchi, and Korean cucumber salad. Will be adding this beef recipe into the rotation! Thank you.
This is a family fav! I add cashews to my bowl and it adds SO much!!
Wonderful!
My wife is a “picky-eater” and she enjoyed this one.
I served it with some Mandu(만두), Oi Muchim (오이무침), Cheongyeongchae Muchim (청경채 된장무침), and Beosot Namul (버섯 나물).
What is the Korean name for this dish?
bulgogi
A family favorite. Easy, cheap, and quick. I add whatever veggies i have.
I admit I’m a lazy cook so this recipe was perfect and delicious! Highly recommend! I used a little less sugar and a little more garlic and ginger than the recipe called for (I just prefer things less sweet in general) but next time I’ll also add more of the red pepper flakes as it wasn’t nearly as spicy as I thought it would be even with a half teaspoon as the recipe calls for. Might also add in some veggies as others have suggested. This time I served it on rice and topped it with some marinated bean sprouts and kimchi I bought from HMart.
Excellent dinner. I’m definitely not a cook. First time cooking this but my wife has made this several times and this is a family favorite! Mine came out great too. Added broccoli to mine and doubled the ground beef and sauce. Thank you for the easy to understand recipe!!
Delicious! I’ve made it as written but my family prefers if I double the sauce recipe except for the brown sugar so it’s not quite so sweet. I usually add finely chopped veggies to add nutritional value and cut back on the red meat per person. Usually add zucchini, mushrooms, and sweet potatoes finely chopped in the food processor. Less authentic but still delicious!
Wow, this dish sure is delicious. It’s a winner every single time I make it for my husband and two daughters (and one of them is very particular). I’ve make it a dozen or so times and overtime have made a few adjustments: we use ground chicken instead of beef, cut back a little bit on the soy sauce and brown sugar (sometimes I use honey), omit the red pepper flakes for the kids, and add a splash of rice vinegar (to give it some acid). It’s an easy, tasty 20 min meal and we love it! Thank you Damn Delicious 🙂
My family really likes this. I do halve the red pepper flakes so it isn’t too spicy for the kids. I serve it over fried rice made with veggies in it so that we have a complete meal.
This is a family favorite and perfect for those evenings that everyone seems to be going in a different direction. I always make it as written and sometimes add broccoli and carrots or edamame. It’s always a hit and never are there leftovers. I’ve also served this as Korean beef tacos topped with Asian slaw. Thanks for this easy versatile recipe! It is dayum delicious!
I make this once or twice a month. Best korean beef recipe ever. My 4 year old loves it.
This is a huge hit at our house and I use it to smuggle in lots of veg for our picky eater. I shred Napa cabbage, carrots, and (shh!) broccoli, and cook those down before carrying on with the recipe. I go for a 1:1 ratio between veg & beef, double the sauce, and he’s none the wiser. It’s also amazing as written, of course!
Absolutely delicious!
So yummy and quick! I doubled the recipe hoping for some lunch leftovers but four adults inhaled it. I sautéed some veggies to make it a meal. I will definitely be making this again!
I love this super easy tasty recipe! I like to add shredded carrots and cucumber with it!
This is in our favorites rotation for sure! So easy, great flavor and we all love it.
Can I cook the meat and sauce and then warm it up for supper when I cook the rice?
Add brocoli slaw at the end and let it steam.
10/10
We’ve made this several times and it’s always a hit! Perfect amount of spice & just a hint of sweetness to balance it out. It’s going into regular rotation!! Delicious!
We make this all the time . Quick, delicious and we always have everything we need . Thanks for such a family favorite .
We make this weekly, and I’m trying to do some food prep for a baby arrival. Do you think I could pre-mix the beef with rice and freeze, or should rice be made fresh each time? Thanks for creating our whole family’s favorite meal!
Hey Claire, the baby is probably already here (congrats!). While I wouldn’t freeze the beef with the rice, you can make rice ahead of time and freeze. A quart size freezer bag should be enough for four servings. I would suggest letting the rice to sit in the fridge for a day after you make it and then put it in the freezer, flat if you can.
I had a slab of pork that I cut off some spareribs that I need to use up. This was very easy to make and tasted fantastic. I served it with TJ’s jasmine rice. Very simple but delicious.
Delicious! Definitely a new family staple. My 1yr old, 11yr old and hubby all loved it! I did not have green onions so that was left out. Other than that, I followed the recipe as stated. Thank you for sharing!
A great quick and easy recipe! Definitely serve over some fresh rice. You can also include firm/extra firm tofu chopped into small 1 cm blocks along with the ground beef to make bigger portions without too much meat. I like to take out the beef after cooking and add the tofu for a few minutes, then put the beef back in along with the sauce step. If you add tofu in addition to the 1lb of beef I’d recommend increasing the amount of sauce accordingly.
As someone else mentioned you can add gochujang (Korean red chili paste) in lieu of the red pepper flakes for more authentic flavour!
Love this.Shared with my family and now it’s everyone’s favorite.I have made it with chicken and steak too.Next is shrimp.
Bulgogi is one of our favorite things to eat when we go out to the Korean restaurant. This recipe tasted like our favorite restaurant just with ground beef! The sauce was excellent. I doubled it because we like extra sauce for the rice. Got some butter lettuce to wrap it all in and my husband loved it! Thank you for this delicious and easy recipe.
I have made this a few times, always great ! Threw some steamed brocoli in with it tonight and cauliflower “fried”rice .
This was so good served over rice! Also served sautéed cabbage and carrots on the side. I will definitely make this again. Thanks for the recipe!
The sugar on this could have been cut in half we felt that it was way too sweet, otherwise the flavor combo was very good.
Super easy and really tasty. I am impressed with this recipe!
I’ve never left a review, but l should as l try so many different recipes. Ths recipe is awesome! Something different to do w ground beef! Fast and easy! My families only beef is they want more sauce for their rice. Lol Tonight is 3rd time l’ve made it. I made the sauce then halved it again! So good!
I love this recipe and have made it many times! I like to add a bag of cole slaw mix (shredded cabbage and carrots) so I almost double the sauce recipe and pour it all together. This mix is delicious over rice or fried into egg roll shells. This time I added some baby corn. Highly recommend this simple quick recipe
Sooo good! Made tonight! I had 1/2 ground beef and 1/2 ground turkey. Followed the recipe really simple and fast. I had leftover brown rice,so didn’t have to wait on that. But my timing was off I wanted a veg. So my meat is done didn’t add the sauce, got out baby bok choy and zucchini, steamed them, warmed the rice added the sauce. Dinner!! Hubby said it was good. It was great for me! Will make this again. Thank you!
Just made this for dinner and it is excellent and was very easy. I followed the recipe exactly and it was perfect for 2 adults, one tween and a toddler. I made a extra side of veggies that includes thin sliced carrots, orange pepper, thinly sliced ginger and some spinach. I sautéed the veggies in some sesame oil. It paired great with this meal. Will make again. Thank you!
You explained each and everything to make Korean beef in quite easy steps. Your video tutorial is also simple. Thanks for sharing this easy guide with us. Keep sharing the good work ahead…
Excellent recipe as is. Quick, easy, and very tasty. Thank you for all your work giving us the great recipes I’ve used for years. Your website is my favorite go to place for recipes. I recommend it highly.
This is an often requested dish around our house. I made it once and it became an instant family favorite. To top it all off, it is easy to make. Thanks for posting. This recipe is Damn Delicious!
One of my favorite quick recipes to make! I usually pickle some sliced cucumbers and carrots to serve with – they are a great addition. Also, I make a Sriracha mayo and drizzle it over the top. Add some cilantro and yum!!
I absolutely love the recipe! I’ve made it many times with beef, but I’m now allergic to beef so I’m going to try it with tofu and I’m so excited Thanks for such a great quick recipe!
This is so easy and completely DELISH!!! I always make a little more of the sauce to add to rice or what have you… Try it!!!
Made this last night for dinner! Turned out very well! Think I might add some hot sauce next time!
Made this last night. Didn’t have any sesame oil. But followed the recipe exactly. Was a big hit !!! Will definitely be making this again! Thanks!
OMG, this recipe is INSANELY good!!!
So easy, uses pantry staples, takes literally no time at all and the flavour is out of this world! I only had about 200g of mince (half a pound?) so blitzed 250g of mushrooms and added them to bulk out the beef. Then added broccoli stalks for greens. Yep, def making this again, and again, and again 🙂
I’ve been making this for a couple years now based on this recipe. I HIGHLY recommend replacing the pepper flakes with 1 tbsp gochujang (or more/less, depending on how spicy you like it). The flavor is much better and I guess it makes it a bit more Korean!
An amazing recipe! I added fried eggs on top which really brought the flavors together.
I’ve been making this delicious recipe for years, everyone loves it; it’s so flavorful and easy! I substitute the ground beef for ground turkey and find it just as tasty.
My husband found this recipe and I can’t believe how easy and delicious it is! Given the bland name for the recipe, I figured it would be quick to make but average tasting…a lazy weeknight dinner when you don’t want to make an effort. This was UNBELIEVABLY delicious. We have made it 4 times already and will make it a go to meal with or without time constraints. It is truly simple to make.
If we are adding a mushrooms or another vegetable, we do 1.5 times the sauce so it isn’t too dry with the extra food.
I never used this site before but I am now scouring the it for another new favorite recipe. Thanks for making dinner delightful!
Have been making this recipe for years now! Absolutely perfect. Just realized I don’t have brown sugar, can I go without it or use regular sugar?
I made this tonight and my family loved it. I added a small onion, half a red pepper and maybe 1/2 cup julienned carrots. I doubled the sauce but cut back in the brown sugar and added extra garlic. I did make a cornstarch slurry to thicken the sauce. Topped it with pickled onions and served it over brown rice with steamed edamame and broccoli. My husband and son added sriracha. Thanks for the great recipe!
I love this!! A quick and easy recipe, I follow the recipe great every time.
Fantastic and quick dinner! Perfect for busy afternoons and late baseball game nights. I added steamed broccoli, and my 6 & 9 year old absolutely loved it! I ate my portion over riced cauliflower and my 1 year old preferred my dish! I’ll definitely double the sauce next time and add a drizzle of spicy mayo to top it off. Highly recommend.
Scrumptious as is and I change it up by adding 1/4 c gochujang, 1 tbsp. honey and the juice of 1 lime. Always add chopped veggies on hand. Great in lettuce wraps.
Followed the exact measurements of this recipe to give a fair review. I love it! For my palate, it is the right balance of ginger, soy sauce, sesame oil, and sugar. Of course, anyone can tweak the proportion according to their liking but this will be the constant ratio I will be using in marinades as well.
This is a crowd pleaser for both vegans and carnivores. I have used a hamburger substitute like beyond burger and no one complains! My family and grandkids cheer when they know this is for dinner. Easy too.
Made it today for the third time. It’s so easy and fast and delicious! I don’t use soy or even reduced soy but rather liquid aminos. Adding veggies is a great idea as I’ve read many do.
This is absolutely delicious! I followed the recipe almost exactly and doubled the sauce as others recommended – however I didn’t use salt-reduced soy sauce, so it was a bit too salty for me. I didn’t double the sauce the next time and the recipe was perfect. Just the perfect blend of spicy, sweet and salty.
I love this recipe, it’s easy and almost a one pot meal! I usually add grated veggies, I’ve done carrots and zucchini the most, but almost any veggie could be added to this delicious dish.
This was an absolute hit! So delicious. It was gobbled up.And so, so easy. I added some garlic pea shoots, a bed of shredded carrot, some iceberg lettuce on top with a drizzle of sesame oil. Also, I used extra lean ground sirloin, so didn’t even have to remove any fat. Will definitely be on regular rotation. Thank you!!
I made this last night following the recipe (doubling the sauce). I also added sautéed mushrooms and steamed broccoli when I poured in the sauce as others had suggested. Wow! Simple but quick and my family advised it’s a keeper.
I’ve never felt inclined to leave a review on a site regarding recipes but had to do so on this one. Thank you for posting the recipe as I now have a new option for ground beef.
I’ve made this several times since seeing the recipe, and it’s been a hit each time! Made it tonight too! Definitely would recommend
This is sooo good- and fast!! I added some sauteed veggies on the side (carrots, broccoli, bell peppers, mushrooms) . The sauce is amazing!
This is my favorite meal EVER and I could have it every night! You need to try this.
This is my go-to recipe when I am short on time or do not feel like fussing. Love it!
DEEELICIOUS! So quick to prepare. Make sure your rice is already cooking :). I doubled the sauce as some recommended, but mine was a little thin, so I’m going to add a little cornstarch next time, because we’ll be making this again! Added some red bell pepper and broccoli and was a perfect, well rounded meal.
I made this for my husband and 2 children. They LOVED it! This will definitely be a staple as one of our household meals. So simple and easy to put together and so deliciously tasty! Thanks so much!
Have made this with beef and with “Impossible beef” and was great either way! Romaine lettuce wraps work well here, with or without rice.
I loved this. So tasty and easy. I had some mushrooms in the fridge. So I sautéed them and added at the end. I also preferred it with fresh ginger. But it was excellent with the powder ginger also. I made it two nights in a row. Now I have to look into your Korean Chicken bowls.
I have made this a few times now and it continues to be a favorite with my family. So so good!
Turned out great I highly recommend this! I am half Korean and this was spot on for bulging I marinade and I paired with home made cucumber kimchi!!
Hello, I hope this message finds you in great health and peace, is it possible to get your recipe for your homemade kimchi? Also did you marinade your ground beef in the sauce before cooking?
This is quick and tasty! I have my daughter teen daughter making it tonight.
Love this recipe, I fry it up with a pound of fresh green beans over rice. A family favorite.
One of our regular favorites. Great with Basmati rice and Impossible meat.
My ratings are simple. If the wife says, meh, you can cook it again if you want that means she will eat it but doesn’t care for it. If she says that was good, we can have it again that is 3 stars! If she says please cook this again that is a 4 star! And if she says, we need to have this again next week, I will eat it anytime you cook it, that is 5 stars. This was dang good and a 4 star by the wife. Easy too.
I made this recipe last night. It was so quick and easy and DELICIOUS!!!
I’ve made this weekly for the past four months. So easy, so good, and my kid is obsessed with it. I add in matchstick carrots and diced spinach to sneak in some vegetables and leave it as-is otherwise. (I also love the regular bulging recipe on here when we can find shaved steak and have time to marinade.) Thank you!!!
This recipe was so good! I added shredded cabbage and carrots. We also had some sesame oil with chili and it added a nice kick! Highly recommend. Tasted exactly like one of our favorite bul-go-gi spots in town!
I made this with sirloin instead of ground beef. I thought about adding other vegetables, but it was late and I was hungry. It was absolutely delicious!
One of my favorite meals to make, I double the sauce and add broccoli or green pepper over brown rice.
I stumbled upon this recipe – it was damn delicious and easy! Was out of red pepper flakes so subbed siracha instead. I tried it on waygu ground beef, oven baked salmon, and sous vide pork chops. all delicious, thank you!
Loved it. Added carrots, mushrooms and asparagus while cooking the meat. It was a hit!
We cook Asian A Lot at our house. We were not expecting a lot out of this “simple” recipe. Well, let me tell you, it is all and more than all the reviews have said. Increased the ginger, red pepper flakes, and Sesame Oil cause we like it spicy. It is Super Good!
My husband was pretty skeptical when I said I wanted to make an oriental dish with ground beef for dinner tonight. I was too, hoping this would live up to all the comments. Well I’m here to report that it absolutely did!! This recipe is so simple to make, and, as my husband said, “stupidly good.” The best part is that it only uses a few ingredients and is super quick. This will definitely be in our regular meal rotation. We want to try this recipe as lettuce or cabbage boats next time! Thanks for a new dinner staple!
Everything noted in this recipe is true. It’s easy and quick to make, and it’s DELICIOUS! A huge win with everyone in our household, including an 8 year old picky eater.
This is also a recipe I have made when bringing someone a meal — always enjoyed!
If you haven’t made this yet, drop everything and do it NOW! It’s one of the best meals I’ve ever made! Substitutes I utilized: half beef/half pork, instead of just beef; put garlic powder in the sauce instead of fresh, cut out the oil because the beef/p0rk supplies its own; added frozen thai veggies when I put the meat in, made a little extra sauce to account for them; serve it over brown rice. It’s just as good without sesame seeds as well (as there’s plenty of sesame oil in the sauce). With the substitutions, I think of this meal as pretty well-balance/healthy, and it just has no business being that delicious (but it is!).
One of our absolute favorites! I use ground turkey, toss with udon noodles and serve with roasted broccoli. We eat this every other week!
This was delicious, thank you! We served steamed broccoli on the side.
Thank you for this recipe; it is so easy and delicious. While cooking, the garlic and beef makes the house smell wonderful, and the kids and husband start salivating. (As I was writing this, my youngest just said, “Something smells really good,” and my eldest said, “I wasn’t hungry but you cooked something good”). Although it is perfect the way it is, I like to add a tbsp of gochuchang for a little heat and even more Korean flavor. This recipe is on repeat in my house.
So very tasty and easy. My husband and I loved it. Can I cook this and freeze? I’d like to make some for an RV trip.
WOW! I tried this recipe yesterday and was a bit skeptical but wanted to try something new to add to the dinner rotation. It was as promised, fast and delish!!
Most certainly will make again and again and again.
Thank you so much for this recipe! I wish dinner could always be as easy as this one
Really quick and delicious! This has become part of our regular weeknight dinner rotation and is so satisfying considering how easy it is. Usually serve with steamed veggies and basmati rice. I like to 1.5x the sauce.
This dish was delish and really did take only 15 minutes to make. I served it with sautéed veggies – snow peas, mushrooms and onions – that you could add or not. I also included crushed peanuts in addition to the sesame seed topper. My picky eating kids loved this too.
I’ve made this recipe more times than I can count. I double the sauce and add whatever vegetables I have on hand (shredded carrots, broccoli, etc) and serve with chopped daikon kimchi.
This recipe has been a staple in our house ever since I discovered it. I usually make it with gochujang instead of red pepper flakes, and I usually make a double batch for our family of 7. We like it with wonton chips for scooping, and we usually have veggies in bowls or on the side. Occasionally, we throw a fried egg on top for an extra treat!
Delish leftover as well. I would suggest having some warm beef or chicken broth on the side to add just in case as we all know rice is dry and the Korean beef can be a little on the dry side.. I also steam my rice in chicken or beef broth to carry additiinal flavor. This dish is so yummy and easy peasy.
This is a weeknight staple in our house! Absolutely delicious and so easy to make.
My kids love this and is a family favorite…
One added thing I do is buy a package of broccoli slaw and fresh pineapple I put both of those in separate dishes and allow family to add to their liking. Also have experimented with cooking ramen noodles (no flavor packet) drain water and allow family to substitute noodle for the rice or add to dish. Usually make once a week

This has become one of my favorite weeknight meals! I use ground turkey instead of beef and it’s just as yummy. I like to do 1.5x the sauce and add in some steamed broccoli or any other veggies I have laying around. Perfection and so quick and easy!
this recipe is excellent we make it often. the only thing we add is a layer of cold shredded carrots between the meat and the rice. My family requests this all the time.
Really delicious. Super quick and easy to make. Will definitely make again. Love this recipe.
This is also great with ground turkey! I actually think it turns out a little better this way than with ground beef and is much cheaper where I live!
One of our favorites! I love to serve it over sautted peppers and rice! I keep frozen ginger root in the freezer so I always have it on hand! Everytime I make it and have lunch leftovers my co-workers want to know what smells so great!
Best quick Asian meal EVARRR. My kids loved it and I have since doubled the recipe when I make it because everyone wants leftovers the next day.
So good! The whole family loved it and that almost never happens.
We’ve made this recipe countless times! It’s so damn delicious!!!
This was so good. I added broccoli and sliced carrots for color. Definitely making again.
This is so yummy! I actually use ground turkey to make it a little healthier and add gochujang (Korean red pepper paste) instead of red pepper flakes. It’s awesome, and I like it with rice or in lettuce cups!
I love this dish! Simple, fast, and delicious!
I love this recipe it’s so easy, I use it all the time. I like to add a bag of shredded cabbage and then i consider it a healthy dinner.
Don’t you love this recipe from Six Sisters! I was thinking this one looked familiar, then saw you listed it as adapted from theirs, and I knew it would taste out of this world. SO good! It’s essentially the same, with some slight variations in how much of certain ingredients. I am not an intuitive cook, and it never occurred to me to add -more- or -less- of anything. I will definitely be trying this with your adjustments!
I love this recipe and make it very regularly! Has one one tried making ahead and freezing? Currently making meals for a trip and would love to be able to bring this one along!
we add veggies to the bowl to round it out. julienned carrots, shredded purple cabbage, cucumber salad, steamed broccoli. so easy and delicious!
Love this recipe. Have made it numerous times. I add veggies cut in match stick size such as carrots and zucchini. I double the recipe and freeze it. It freezes well. So good
Absolutely delicious! It’s like a sweet beef and i’m obsessed with it.
This is such a fast easy dish to prepare and so delectable!
I make this frequently and serve over rice and sauteed peppers! Love it!
I made this for dinner tonight and it was DELICIOUS! I’m pinning in Family Favorites on Pinterest! I made rice, glazed carrots and vegetable egg rolls to serve with it. Next time I think I’ll double the sauce since we put it over rice even though it was fantastic as is!
This is flat out awesome!
AMAZING! My one year old and the whole family loved this recipe. It’s also great because it takes no more than 15 minutes to make. Definitely saving this one!
So easy and delicious !
Love this recipe, my kids love it so much they made me double the sauce. i also put broccoli at the end with the cover on it. A new staple in our house!
Wow! This was absolutely delicious! So simple, yet oh, so good! My mom came back twice to compliment how good it was and asked for the recipe. Thank you! I used ground turkey and used liquid amino instead if soy sauce (as I always do). I also sauteed a bunch of veggies separately and then tossed them in at the end, mixing in to coat them with the sauce, too.
Delicious!
Seriously, I could just eat the beef mixture with a spoon. I just totally stole this recipe and turned it into a zucchini boat. I made the beef (added a 8oz can of water chestnuts-diced, and it fish sauce) and then took one of those “ready” sticky rice bowls (7.4oz) and mixed it in. Then stuffed that into some gone-wild zucchini’s from my garden. Once baked, I served some Hoisin and Sriracha sauces on the side. (Who’s kidding, I just put the bottles on the table, LOL). I could totally see this working for a Korean Lettuce Wrap as well. Thank you for such a well balanced recipe. It’s fantastic.
The Korean beef was not as sweet as many are which is good for those with diabetes. We halfed on the hot peppers which made it out level of spicey. We added ginger and butter to the rice. Because we loooovvvvvve veggies we add sauteed thin sliced carrots and pickled onions celery and chopped spring mix (lettuce). I guess we left the country of Korea after that. But it was sooooo good. Great flavors. Good recipe. This one is definitely a printer
Loved how easy it was!
Weve made this a few times. Tonight we added a couple cups 9f broccoli from the garden. I increased the sauce by half so it would coat the broccoli nicely. This recipe is a keeper.
Last year, I tasted bulgogi for the first time through the Mr. Bulgogi food truck in Pittsburgh, PA. I scanned the internet to find a similar recipe and was a bit disappointed in the lack recipes that were so easy that my 7 year old nephew could make it. I just stumbled upon this recipe this past week and actually made it for dinner tonight. I almost cried happy tears when my mind took me back to that bulgogi. We need an easy button for this! I did do a couple things a bit differently out of necessity though because I don’t like super close to a store that would have sesame seeds.PF Chang’s Sesame sauce, which already has sesame oil and sesame seeds in it. I also doubled the recipe and only had enough for half of the soy sauce necessary so I used Worchestershire sauce in addition to half the soy sauce called for in the recipe. I thought it was out of this world DELICIOUS!
I made this over ramen with some thin diced onion and red pepper for some added texture & crunch– used the remaining sauce to lubricate the noodles. Very delicious
This recipe was pretty great!! I added half an onion, 1/4 of a large bell pepper, and a few baby carrots chopped to the pan first to add some veggies. I also wound up adding quite a bit more soy sauce, about 1 1/2 tsp of low sodium soy and then 1/2 tsp of dark soy, and then a whole load more red pepper flakes. It was a bit too sweet and needed some more savory. But apart from that, this recipe was so good. I am going to have to double it next time because I know my parents are going to complain about the lack of leftovers.
Easy and delicious! Four stars because there was no veggies – I added thin carrot sticks, shredded bok choy, and bean sprouts. Thinking about it now I could have added some kimchi for an extra kick too. Next time 🙂 Thanks for a great, quick, easy and adaptable recipe.
Really easy and tasty! It will be on the menu again. I didn’t have sesame oil and used olive oil. I also didn’t have green onions. Neither affected the recipe and I think it could be very adaptable. Your main ingredients would be the brown sugar, soy, ginger, and red pepper flakes and are what make the sauce delicious.
This is an amazing recipe. Easy to make for a weeknight dinner. It is my 16 year old sons favorite meal. I have made it with ground pork before too. Delicious.
This is one of our favorites – my husband asks for it at least once a week! I made it while visiting his son and his girlfriend -it was a hit there too! I’ve shared the recipe with them! Recipe is very easy to follow – I usually double the sauce and green onions. Thank you for this DELICIOUS recipe!
tasty and quick to make
This recipe is amazing!! You literally can’t go wrong – doesn’t matter if you add too much or too little of any of the ingredients, it’s delicious no matter what!! My family loves Asian food and this is my go-to quick weeknight meal. Yum. I serve it with white rice and peas in a bowl.
Really excellent, really easy. Used 1 T. grated fresh ginger in place of the powder, but otherwise followed the recipe exactly. I usually have these ingredients on hand and this outstanding and super simple recipe is now part of the rotation. Thank you, Chungah!
Loved it. Instant dinner for . 30mins or less and everyone loved it.
Had this with the Yves vegetarian ground beef and it was so good! It’s become a regular around our house
My family loves it. Make it all the time
Tried this recipe for my family, and they loved it. Easy enough for the teens to make when it’s their turn to cook on our busy days. Will be taking a look at other recipes, too. Thanks!
A family favorite!
Damn, this is delicious and now a staple in my house. Easy, cheap, and yummy? YES
Love this recipe! I serve it on steamed rice with a side os seasonal veggies.
Delicious and simple. Made it with noodles as well. Versatile sauce for easy spin offs.
Made a chicken and vegetable version today.
Delicious. We used leftover chicken instead of ground beef because it was available. My daughter prepped most of the ingredients last night, so cooking was fast!
I love this recipe. I almost always have a lb of ground beef or soy crumbles in the freezer, and love all the flavors of Asian cuisine. This is so easy and quick to make. I’m writing this after having eaten a big bowl of it over rice with steamed broccoli. It’s one of my go-to meals when I’ve had a long day but want to make sure we eat something healthy and filling. all of the ingredients are fairly common pantry staples and it’s so versatile. I think the next time I’ll add a fried egg for something different. Thank you for the great recipe!

OmG
Someone took ground beef out of the freezer instead of a slab of pork, so i googled and came across this recipe. I dod not want Spaghetti.
I used jarred ginger and garlic and 1,5 lbs meat so I scaled up.
I did not have the green onions or sesame seeds. So I did without. Our store is closed on Sundays
I used sambal instead of the pepper flakes, basically I just browned the beef and mixed all the rest together and dumped it in the pan over the browned beef. I used a bit more soy sauce and then thickened it with corn starch.
So i served with steamed rice and broccoli.
My son who usually doesn’t like saucy stuff annihilated his food, my husband had 3 serving and was looking for more…
This will be a dish I will teach the guys how to make it because it is so easy to make. A Hit in our House.
I’m no chef but have been cooking since I was 9, started out on peanut butter cookies with my Mom, graduated to home made dark cocoa fudge with peanut butter, a couple yrs later. I am 63 now & have cooked almost everything since then, but this is by far one of the easiest and best tasting recipes I’ve ever tried. I’ve made this about 3 times & we are still loving it.
I this by accident looking for other stuff, I am glad I found it.
Thank you for posting a great recipe
My kids absolutely love this! We had this a while back and I forgot about it as things got crazy. Well after looking for some different dinner ideas I remembered this one and made it again. My sons, age 11 and 9, went back for seconds. It’s super easy and quick! We paired it with spring rolls and bib lettuce. Perfect dinner.
This is one of my favorite recipes and I just wanted to share that this freezes SO well. I will make the meat in 3 lb batches and then portion it out into individual servings. To reheat you can just dump the frozen meat out into a skillet and thaw it over medium heat (while breaking it up). Don’t add the rice, green onion, or sesame seeds before freezing, add those fresh each time you reheat. I almost always have a batch of this in my freezer!
We really liked this recipe and will make it again. However, we thought it needed a little more sauce so next time I make it I will probably double the sauce
This was amazing and so easy! We used Impossible-brand plant-based meat and fresh ginger (I didn’t have dried ginger) and we tried it with Jasmine rice and lettuce cups. What a hit in my household!!
Love this as a flavorful easy dinner. Was just wondering about using Impossible brand as a substitute. Going to try this next time – thank you!
I add whatever I have: broccoli, spinach, fried egg or sometimes hard boiled depending on my mood, cucumbers, carrots and Gochujang sauce (Target makes a good one) and now we have this weekly! Love it!
Very easy and absolutely delicious. I’ve made this multiple times and it is a staple recipe. I also sauteed chopped vegetables like bell peppers, onions carrots, etc. before adding the beef for added variety and nutrition. Also, if you don’t have chili flakes, sambal oelek works wells as a substitute. I bet this would work well with ground turkey also. Thank you for the recipe!
Made this, spooned over white rice, with a fried egg and sauteed spinach. It’s a keeper!
Amazing! I made this tonight with plant based mince and the family couldnt tell it wasn’t beef mince! They kept going back for more! I served it with some white rice and a side of sauteed shredded cabbage and carrots. Brilliant and so easy!
My daughter found this recipe. We are loving it. My family enjoys Asian foods. I am now needing to be on a low sodium diet so I used Coconut Aminos sauce by Coconut Sectet. It has only 90 mg per serving. I usually served it over rice and sauteed carrots, onion and celeey
Fabulous and super easy. I’ve made it several times, and its a crowd please. I sometimes add broccoli or Asian stir fry vegetables to the meat mixture, and double the sauce, just to make it a little healthier. It’s also good over riced cauliflower instead of regular rice.
A surprise. I refused to pay the cost per pound of desired steak and thought there had to be a better choice. Did a quick search in the grocery store for a suitable substitute and this was my choice. Family wolfed it down and wanted more. Thank you!
My son that doesn’t eat many new things had two helpings of this dish! Thank you.
This meal is super delicious and impossible to mess up. I accidentally overcooked the beef, and was missing sesame oil, green onions and ginger. And it STILL tastes amazing.
I have made this several times now, it’s so good. I have doubled the recipe and added shredded carrots to it and it turns out great for my crowd of teens who we know don’t eat many veggies.
One of our family’s favorite recipes! Love to use fresh ginger when I have it. I go easy on the red pepper flakes for my kids, then my husband and I add them on top or throw some Sriracha on to give it a kick. So easy, so tasty, and a regular at our house!
WHENEVER MY DAD MAKES THIS FOR DINNER…I GET TWO BOWLS AND THEN THE LEFTOVERS THE NEXT DAY HOT DAMN…………….ITS AMAZIN
The easiest Korean beef bowl recipe I’ve tried! Me and my husband loved it so much every time we shop for minced beef we know what we’ll cook. I have tried this in rice bowls and it also works with lettuce wraps. This is a good base recipe and may be customised as desired.Yummy!
I had 5 pounds of ground beef in the fridge so I quintupled the recipe and it was great! I added 2 tbsps of gojuchang for Korean flair and a handful of shredded carrots. Everyone raved!
This was SO good! My family could not stop raving about it while eating it.
My daughter and I are vegetarian, so we used the sauce recipe, thickened with a bit of cornstarch, over grilled vegetables. If we ate meat, we would definitely still love this recipe. We appreciate all of the wonderful flavors that come through, and how simple it is to prepare.
This is absolutely going into our meal rotation.
So easy and very delicious! I’ve made this recipe several times. My husband loves it.
SO good! I can’t even tell you how many times ive made this. its perfect for meal prepping too.
soooo damn delicious! Added shredded carrots and red peppers served over rice with an asian cucumber salad
One of my favorites for a few years now! I make it again and again!! So easy and delicious.
We loved this recipe! Very simple and easy to make. Will definitely make this again.
Was easy to prepare and so tasty with white rice and a fresh salad.
Very quick and easy dinner for a weeknight. And it is delicious too!
Really delicious! I cut the recipe in half based on the amount of meat I had. I also put in extra spring onions. It made a really satisfying dinner. I can envision all sorts of possibilities with this as a base. Thank you!
This looks great for my family which has a few picky eaters. Do I put in plain sesame oil or toasted sesame oil?
Wow! This was way better than I thought it would be. Extremely tasty and pleased my elderly mother, too. Served it over rice and had Honey Glazed garlic roasted carrots on the side. The only thing I didn’t have was red pepper flakes so I used cayenne pepper. This dish tasted like I was in Korea again—where I lived for a year serving in the US Air Force. This is a keeper and will make again. Thank you!
Love this easy sweet and spicy combination! This will be in our rotation. We threw on a fried egg because why not!
This was SO GOOD. I used ground turkey and added some green cabbage that I needed to use up. Served over white rice.
I’m watching my picky nephew who has refused to eat anything all day. (He’s 4 and a vegetarian. Okay. Sure.)
This plus vegetable protein and peas over cauliflower rice. He ate 2 bowls and passed out. Bless you and bless this recipe.
Love,
Forever A cool Aunt, never a parent.
Noah.
This is fantastic! It was a winner for both the picky husband and a small child! I will probably try more vegetables in it next time but this recipe is definitely a winner and was super easy!
Amazing flavor! I added cooked mushrooms to the beef before cooking in the sauce. I ate over rice, cooked zucchini and carrot sticks, which I also drizzled with some of the sauce and it was amazing! Will definitely be making again!
Super quick and easy. I added sliced onion and red pepper since I had them on hand and topped with an egg and avocado. None of this is necessary as the dish alone is fantastic. Great easy dish which can be supplemented easilyIf you have the time and ingredients.
Great recipe and super easy to make! Will definitely add this to my weekly rotation. 🙂
Very tasty and so easy to make. My family loved it and I make it all the time now
Amazing flavour. Didn’t have red pepper but used chilli powder and 5spice instead. Absolutely delicious
Made this today and put it on a sandwich roll as I was craving a bahn mi-type sandwhich. Added cilantro and siracha mayo and it really satisfied.
Love this, it has become my go to! (I made the vegetarian version of this using quorn mince).
So delicious!
I use Truvia brown sugar blend to save on some calories. I steam and mix in shredded broccoli and carrots and riced cauliflower. Tried tonight with a fried egg! Makes an already fantastic meal even better!
Love your recipes!
I’ve been using this recipe for over a year. Does not disappoint!
Quico and sooo delicious
Needed to make something with ground beef and my leftover rice and this recipe was the answer! Had all the ingredients on hand, so easy to make and very flavorful! Going to add some veggies next time or maybe throw it in a salad. Thanks for another great recipe!
Love this!
I made it so fas. My modifications were very small: tsp of garlic chili paste instead of chili flakes and i added a dash of fish sauce.
I also served it with a medium fried egg. YUM!
So delicious, quick and easy!
I tried serving in lettuce bibs – even better! Thank you for the recipe – this is going to be a good go-to for a quick dinner with ground beef or turkey.
Soooo gooood! Added a couple of dashes of fish sauce for umami (because no green onion) to the meat at the end. Served with steamed broccoli, rice, chopped peanuts, and spicy mayo coleslaw on the side. Can’t wait for the leftovers tomorrow.
Wowza! Simple and so tasty!
This a great recipe for a week night meal. I Added some quick pickled red onions and quick pickled radishes as a garnish.
So good! Amazing. Tickled all the “Asian” food parts of my brain! Thank you!
Served with grated fresh carrots on the side and steamed green beans.
Easy and flavorful! I topped it off w a runny sunny side up egg!
My family loves this and it’s so quick and easy to make! I didn’t have ground ginger so I substituted Allspice. So good!
This was delicious and it really was quick and easy. I did make 2 substitutions – I used bottled minced ginger (out of powder) and I added a jalapeno that I had on hand. SO good, and my 7 year old liked it too 🙂
I have been failing on everything in quarantine cooking but this. IT WAS SO EASY AND DELICIOUS.
This is what I did different.
maple syrup instead of sugar and less of it.
And frozen ginger because I ran out of fresh.
and ground turkey instead of beef.
Cannot wait to try more of your recipes.
Thank you so much!
How much maple syrup did you sub?
We love this! Thank you. Everyone eats it happily (including kids).
My 15 yo daughter and I recently fell in love with bulgogi and 1 recipe we tried was VERY involved and much spicier than my daughter would eat. This was perfect – so much easier, more affordable, and just the right flavors and spice! Thank you!
Very good and easy to make! will definitely make again. I mixed my own sauce with teriyaki, soy sauce, general tso sauce and brown sugar and water with hot sauce and hot pepper flakes! please make this people.
I’ve been making this since last year and it is my 15 year old daughter’s FAVORITE dish, which I love! Her favorite dish is something I can get on the table in under half an hour! We usually add broccoli and add a bit more sauce in order to get things really saucy with the extra broccoli! Thanks SO MUCH for this recipe!
This was excellent, easy, and used what I had in the pantry and the freezer. I made it last week and I’m going to make it again tonight. A perfect, comforting, delicious meal for these trying times.
What a delicious meal! So easy and cheap – but the taste was the opposite.
Have been trying many recipes while in isolation for the pandemic and came across this gem. We loves spicy food so we went heavy on the red pepper flakes. 10/10. Kids ate every bite!
I added some shredded carrot, romain lettuce and shredded cucumber to make it pretty. Loved that I had everything on hand in the pantry. Am going to save this recipe and put it in our meal plans! Thanks for the delicious recipe!
We love this recipe with snow peas and rice. We often use your child garlic sauce in place of the red pepper and fresh ginger, but good both ways.
So good!!! I used a little less brown sugar but otherwise followed the recipe as is. My husband went for seconds. Adding this recipe to our rotation!
This recipe is a winner! I followed everything except I put a bit more ginger in and served it over somen noodles. My husband and I think it’d be good over rice or as lettuce wraps. Definitely putting this on rotation!
used left over rice and ground turkey. I didn’t have green onions so I used a yellow onion. The rest of the ingredients I did have. The meal turned out very good. I added some green peas to the mix. Delicious!
I wasn’t sure what to make tonight and just I happened to find this recipe. I thought it would be an easy way to finish off my ground beef. It was excellent! I look forward to experimenting with it. Thank you for the inspiration !
Top this with a fried egg, some quick pickled asian style shredded carrots and some quick pickled asian style cucumber. Add a garnish of cilantro and some chopped peanuts.
This is recipe is a staple in our house!
I doubled this recipe for my family of 5, and it made enough for the boys to have seconds and my husband to have leftovers for lunch. It tastes even better the second day! My younger kids don’t really like ground beef, but they ate this dish with gusto. I made the recipe as written, doubling all ingredients and using an entire bunch of green onions (white and green parts). I left out the ginger because we didn’t have any on hand, and it had great flavor even without it. I will definitely make this again!
Wow, we loved it! It was quick and easy, but super tasty. Thank you for the recipe.
Super fast, super easy, super tasty! I’ve been making this every 3 weeks or so.
I make this ALL.THE.TIME…love it exactly as is!!
A favourite in our house!
It’s requested at least once a week!
This has been in heavy rotation for years. I always use fresh ginger. I top with cilantro if I have any. I also give each serving a fried egg on top, and that’s what seals the deal.
I may experiment with less sugar and replace some sweetness with shredded pear. I don’t think the full sugar amount is needed.
Excellent.
Is it better you use fresh ginger?
My family loves this dish! I double it and prep for lunches for the week. Question…does the nutrition info provide include the rice? My guess is no.
This recipe is amazing, I can’t believe I never thought to cook ground beef in this way. Much more cost-effective than using steak cuts.
I altered this a little bit for even more flavor. I sautéed the garlic in chili oil instead of plain vegetable oil for additional spice, and I also added a dash of Chinese 5 Spice Powder in the sauce mixture which gave the dish more depth.
I absolutely love how the recipe uses simple pantry ingredients and it’s so simple to put together. With some steamed vegetables it’s a complete meal and an easy meal prep recipe! This will be added to my rotation.
So good! I added broccoli and red pepper to it for a little vegetable and it was super yummy!
Did you increase the amount of sauce to accommodate for the veggies or was it fine as is? I also want to add broccoli!
This is a terrific recipe!! So easy and delicious! Do try! I recommend this!
I love this recipe so easy and simple and delicious!
Made this tonight over rice with steamed broccoli and it was amazing. We will be making this again! It was tasty and super simple. I almost always have these ingredients.
Love this recipe! I modify and use ground turkey and add in onions, peppers, broccoli, carrots or whatever else I have on hand. It’s huge hit in our house and my go to meal when I am short on time or tired. Love it!
Thank you SO much for this delicious and so so easy recipe. I served it with yuzu marinated cucumbers and it was a big hit with my family. Its always great to have a new option for ground beef!!
Super delicious! My whole family loves it.
I wanted to add a review for this recipe. I was a bit skeptical of the ground ginger but it works perfectly. I really appreciated not having to grate ginger for the sauce when I had come home late and I was rushing to get dinner on the table. I love this recipe as it is tasty, quick and loved by all family members. I served it with udon but I also have served it with rice.
Awesome! So simple! My entire family loves this! That NEVER happens!
I didn’t have a few of the ingredients so I used apple cider vinegar, white sugar, honey, regular soy sauce and did not add Sriracha as I’m cooking for my kid. Sauteed chopped yellow onion before putting everything else in the pot. Turned out delicious! Thanks for the recipe 🙂
This is my go to recipe. It’s like spaghetti in everyone else’s house but in my house, this is it. My kids love this dish!!! I love it and my husband. I make a few adjustments because I don’t usually have green onions always at hand but everything else I do. I double the sauce and use rice noodles because it tastes so good!
easy, very tsty, will add broccoli chopped or peapods next time toot
Just tried this, it’s really good! And easy. I might try to make it with less sugar but maybe not
This is a family favorite. Only thing I did different was instead of ground beef I used ground venison. No one even knows! Worked better I think less fat. Thanks
Super easy, super tasty!
All kids AND husband love it!
It’s a fav in our house!
Thank you !
A favorite and quick and easy. Thank you.
Awsome, not too sweet, the red pepper flakes make it. I tried it with hamburger and more brown sugar (another recipe) and my family wasn’t too crazy about it, but I really liked it. I made this last night, with stir fry sliced beef and it was a hit.
I love this! I modified a bit, by throwing in some sugar snap peas and sliced water chestnuts (skipping green onion).
It’s a household favorite and I admit to making it way too often.
This recipe is amazing. The kids love it, so thank you for making my job easier.
Thank you for such a super simple and delicious recipe! My family loved it!!
I made this except I swapped out soy sauce with coconut aminos (required slightly less brown sugar due to coconut aminos being a little sweeter than soy sauce) and added sliced grilled mushrooms. I served it over brown rice, the family loves it and it is part of our meal planning now.
Very good! Added zucchini noodles, shredded carrots and red paper. Will definitely make again!
My family loves this recipe. My sister is very picky so it is always hard finding a new recipe she loves. She loves Korean Beef and can’t stop asking for it. My mom and dad back home have fit it to our normal rotation of dinner meals.
As for myself, I am up at college and think Korean Beef is to die for. I have even added in mixed veggies corn, carrots, and green beans to make it into a nice stir fry dish. I have also on occasion made it with rice-a-roni instead of rice.
I have also occasionally, substituted some of the soy sauce for teriyaki sauce to add some sweetness to it. Mmmm good tasted like desert for dinner.
Thank you for sharing this amazing recipe!
We have made this several times now. We added sliced mushrooms and onions. We double up the sauce so there is lots for the rice.
This is a staple in my meal planning. Family loves it. In fact, I taught my college-age son how to make it today so that he can make it on his own. My other son has to be told not to take it all and to leave some for the rest of the family! Thanks for such great recipes!
This was so delicious, I am adding to my favorites! We added sauteed green/red pepper, water chestnuts and onion and blanched broccoli. Yum! The red chili flakes was just amount of kick. Thank you!
This is my youngest son’s favorite dish! I’ve been making it for a few years and it’s so simple and delicious. Thanks for a great recipe!
I’ve been using this recipe of yours for years & just thought to leave a review. My husband LOVES and my smallest rates it a million stars. Thanks!
I was desperate for a quick hamburger dish. I was “Hangry!”. I found this and fortunately had all ingredients except gr onions. It took me start to finish 23 minutes. I had to gather ingredients and mince the garlic. OMGoodness!! DELICIOUS!! I was too hungry to cook the rice so I topped my left over mashed potatoes. Still tasty! I will make more sauce and freeze it for future meals.
So freaking yummy!!!!!
Thank you so much for this recipe. I have been using it for a long time now, and my family loves it. Since my husband is watching his fat intake, I use ground turkey, but this recipe is perfect as is. The ground turkey is leaner so I end up usually doubling the sauce. I also cut up extra green onions and put them in the turkey at the end of the cooking time. They wilt just a little and give a little more depth of flavor. For an added crunch, I use fresh lettuce. My girls take a spoonful of the rice and meat and add it into a leaf of lettuce (bibb, red leaf, or green leaf-I have tried other types, but they like these the best.), wrap it up, and eat it. I love that this meal is quick, easy, and uses items that most of us have on hand already. I would like to know what the fat content and nutritional information of this meal would be using turkey and not beef. Is there any way to post that?
We are so happy to hear this recipe is a keeper for you, Christina!
Nutritional information, however, is provided only for select recipes at this time. If it is not available for a specific recipe, we recommend using free online resources at your discretion (you can Google “nutritional calculator”). Hope that helps!
Very good!!! I added zucchini and cauliflower chopped finely and it was a nice addition.
I made this and used honey for the sweetener instead of brown sugar. Paleo! I added green beans, and mushrooms and served it over cauliflower rice. i also doubled the recipe. A very big hit at my house! Thanks for the recipe! 🙂
This is a long overdue review. I have been making this dish for a good year now and it is one of my family’s favorite dishes. When it comes to food all 3 of my kids have different feelings and tastes, but this bowl they all 3 ABSOLUTELY LOVE! Thank you. I am a big essential oil user so I choose to replace the ginger with doterra ginger oil which works very well. We make this dish very often because it’s easy, quick and ALL 5 of us love it. Can dinner be any simpler?! My hubby is a texture person so we add egg rolls on the side for those who need a crunch (me, I’m so satisfied with the dish alone). I can’t thank you enough for this perfect recipe.
So easy to make. My family loves it
Love this recipe! Some where else I picked up a recommendation to add Bulldog Worstchestire (sorry I can not seem to spell it) specifically and I do- a teaspoon or so to taste. I don’t know why that brand was mentioned, because it seems the same as any to me, but I like it in this dish. I love how I can add any vegtables I have on hand to the cooking pot or on the side as toppers. Tonight it’s rather green- soy beans, spinach, celery, green onions, plus mushrooms and a can of diced water chestnuts (which I almost always use because we like them. Other nights I have cold quick pickled cucs and carrots, radishes…peppers, broccoli, squash. Tonight I made three pounds worth to freeze for an easy post-travel meal when we get home late after an up coming trip.
It was super easy and very tasty. Everyone in my family loved it.
That’s the goal! Thanks for sharing, Jill!
Korean Beef. Absolutely incredible. It can be served up with a variety of carbs, good organic rice seems the best.
But this is an outstanding go to option mid week. When you are tired but are like myself determined to cook for the family.
Plated up with peas or broccoli or any other quickly prepared vegetable and a fruit at the end to cleanse your palette. Leftovers from this dish are incredible as well. Might be prudent to cook extra.
Thanks for this awesome recipe. We cook totally organic from start to finish. One of the venefyts is that the family never feels over fool post prandially. Just satisfied. .
We skip the sesame seeds and green onions because i never have them. This is a go-to meal when we need something quick.
Definitely quick -next time I would maybe double the sauce so it really gets sopped up by the rice. A touch less flavorful than I was expecting but that may be because I used a shortcut ginger paste instead of fresh, and ground turkey bc that’s what I had. Everyone still went back for seconds, and my second bowl had a lot more sauce/flavor (hence why I might double it next time). Can’t beat the quick prep with pantry staples, so will make again. My husband called it a “divorced dad” recipe (that’s a compliment-it means quick and easy). My 2 year old had 3 bowls so she’s was definitely a fan!
Made this for dinner and it was so quick, easy and really delicious. Was a hit at the dinner table.
I added cilantro as a garnish and served it with kimchi.
I’m pretty upset that this recipe is not the top search for “ground beef bulgogi” anymore. It looks like another site copied your recipe and slapped on a white person story. Sad to see that Google dropped this page down.
Anyway, the recipe is good. I use less sugar and soy sauce than the recipe.
So easy and delicious! My entire family loves this meal and that is a rarity. I doubled the recipe and it was perfect. I also added a fried egg to the top of each bowl. Such yummy flavors. Great recipe.
this is absolutely delicious !! my favorite 🙂 i was wondering though, what counts as a serving ? like, a cup, 1/2 a cup, etc.
Natalie, you would have to divide the full amount by 4 servings to get the serving size. Hope that helps!
okay, thank you so much !
Does this include the rice? or is it just for the ground beef mixture?
Thank you!
Natalie, I have measured the entire recipe’s weight to be 480 grams, so a 1/4 of the recipe is 120 grams.
Yum! Easy and damn delicious This will now be a new go to recipe! Thank you for another great recipe.
Absolutely awesome. Best go to I have in my arsenal right now.
It’s one of my all-time favorites, Kathy! 🙂
I’ve made this, and then added lettuce and other veggies on top, finishing with a ginger sesame Asian salad dressing. I like to call it Korean Haystacks.
This is so good! But I’m wanting to double the recipe, possibly triple. Do I double or triple ALL ingredients? I was thinking if I triple the meat, just double the rest of the ingredients. That way it’s not too sweet.. Any help is appreciated!
That should totally work, Natasha!
This was super easy – even with juggling a toddler and infant. 2.5x the recipe and added peas and spinach. Oove your recipes, thank you!
it is the best korean food I have ever had
Absolutely an amazing dish! Super easy, quick and tastes! And different than meals I am used to cooking! This recipe will soon become your next favorite “lazy night” dish! I made it about 5x now without sesame oil and it still turned out perfect! Tonight will be my first time trying WITH sesame oil! Thank you for this amazing recipe!
Made this as a meal prep for last week and let me just say, this will definitely be a regular. I absolutely loved this recipe. I couldn’t find the sesame seeds at my commissary, sadly, but I did throw in some sauteed mushrooms and cooked my spinach and brown rice a tad longer than the instructions suggested. (It’s almost always good to slightly overcook rice if you’re going to be reheating it.) If you go by the recipe, it makes four perfectly portioned lunches. This meal heats up beautifully in the microwave in about three minutes, and it smells good too! It also doesn’t make your breath smell bad if you frequently deal with people during the day- the touch of ginger really masks the fact that you just ate. (Actually, I know this is gross, but the aftertaste is really good- and I’ve never said that about a food before! Must be the ginger?) Lastly, it does what food is supposed to do, it’s energizing and it makes you feel full until dinner. Wash it down with some hot tea or coffee and you’ll feel fresher than a newborn baby.
This dish really is the *perfect* meal prep for work. Highly recommended.
The best! We have this almost once a week and have served it for family dinners. Everyone asks for the recipe which we gladly share. A keeper for sure!
Love this recipe. Used it with Pork and Veal instead and it tasted delicious! Also didn’t have shallots, so used chives instead. I also added shredded carrot and beans for this for a veggie kick, and it was absolutely amazing. My husband and 3 year old loved this quick and easy meal.
I was looking for something different to do with ground beef (nachos and tacos get pretty boring when they’re your only go to for a quick meal) when I found this recipe. It was pretty good! I had to leave out the sesame and sesame oil because my husband is allergic to it, and didn’t have the green onions on hand, but it still tasted great! Tangy and sweet.
Another alteration I made was use paprika instead of red pepper flakes (I’m not a fan of spicy food and know that paprika is milder) and that still gave it a savory tang.
I added some steamed brocolli on top for a vegatable and gave some extra flavor by cooking my rice in chicken stock with soy sauce and ginger. The entire bowl was flavorful.
I will make this again!
Wow!! This was so good and I already had most of the ingredients. I usually buy a prepared Bulgogi sauce but now I can make it at home and make it G/F by using tamari sauce. I can’t wait to try some of your other recipes.
I doubled-ish the recipe because we have a big family and it was so good! I added some pickled cucumber that I cut into sticks, shredded carrots and a fried egg on top. AND a squirt of sriracha…. just because, sriracha! It was a bi bim bap of sorts, and totally hit the spot! Thank you! This is going into my recipe rotation! ❤
Made it with ground turkey… it was awesome. I have a very picky eater son, and he devoured 3/4 of the pan! just the right amount of sweet and spice. so quick and very easy!! thanks!
I started making this a few months ago. It’s now a family staple. I add different vegs, like sweet red pepper and jalapenos and a lot more red pepper flakes, but otherwise this is an awesome dish. Thank you for sharing it. We just love it!!!
I loved this recipe! It was super easy and delicious to eat. I would definitely make this again.
Very good recipe. We always add whatever fresh vegetables we have on hand. Broccoli, carrots, peppers anything will work.
This is the one meal all 4 members in my family will eat. I put pineapple chunks in to cut the spice some for the kids and a bit of cornstarch to thicken the sauce some and make it stick to the meat more and everyone in the house cleans their bowl every time and asks for more. Definitely a household staple.
This recipe is a favorite at our house! I add in chopped mushrooms and thinly sliced carrots. You really could add any veggie and it would turn out great!
One of my all time favorite recipes! It’s so easy to make and the flavor is fantastic! Today, I made a couple of substitutes using shredded beef and quinoa. It was AWESOME! Thank you providing such incredible recipes!
This dish has been a regular in our home for the past couple years at least. I love how simple it is to throw together and how I can whip it up without a trip to the grocery store. Thank you for this recipe!
A quick and easy meal and my family loves it!
This is a keeper for my kitchen; excellent and really tasty. Thank you for posting!
Easy to make. Loved by ALL 5 in the family which is maybe done with 4 or 5 recipes. I usually make 4X the amount rice and meat and 6X the sauce because of it’s great taste alone on the JASMINE rice! Thank you for the inspiration!
Hi! I found your recipe on Pinterest and I had to try it. Let me tell you, it’s a HUGE favorite in my house with my teen boys (and me)! I’ve already made it 3 times in about 6 weeks. And when I make it, I have to quadruple the recipe, so that we have plenty of seconds and lunches for the next day!
made this a bunch of times. to me it tastes better with coconut aminos. I also add broccoli. kids love it too.
Thanks!
This is delicious and so easy. Its one of my husbands favorite recipe. If you dont have sesame oil, buy it online or you will pay a lot in a grocery store.
This is one of my all time favorite recipes. My teens and hubby loves it, and my picky toddler niece and nephew love it. I have this on rotation and always triple it.
Made it twice this week! So good!
Great recipe! Works great with some extra peppercorns. I stir fried the rice in and added an egg and it was extra tasty!
This recipe is so good! It’s been a little while since we’ve had it and making again tonight. I like to serve it with Stir fry cabbage and broccoli, and omit the sesame seed garnish.
This was really good, although I did make a couple tweaks. First I doubled the sauce recipe to pour over my rice. I also added some Sombal paste because we like a little more heat. And next time I will drastically cut the amount of sugar as it was way too sweet even though I didn’t use the full amount needed. A very good recipe though and will add to our weekly rotation.
I’ve made this, and just by chance mixed my salad that had Newman’s Own Sesame Ginger on it. Now I just put the salad and dressing on top all the time! So good
This is a favorite in my house. I add onions, mushrooms, and peppers (any kind I happen to have) and serve it with Jasmine rice and baked broccoli. Adding onions took this meal to the next level. I also use ground turkey. Turned out great and works well for meal prep as well. I have used the same sauce here with angel hair pasta and chicken for like a stick pasta meal. Its delish!
Thanks for sharing Sam!
EXCELLENT recipe! Quick, easy and tasty! I made mine with ground turkey and it was delicious. Thank you for another “keeper” recipe 🙂
Thanks, Gina!
This was delicious! Thanks for the great recipe.
Can I double this recipe? We are a family of 5 and plus I would love to have left overs. Thanks!
Yes, absolutely!
This looks amazing, as usual. Will be making this week.
Let us know how you like it!
We had this for dinner yesterday, and it was perfect. However, because my teen son hates onions of any kind, but my husband and I love all onions, I prepared them in a separate skillet, added some spices to it, then I put some on top of ours. Everything was amazing. Thans a gain for alway post such tasty meals. Now they are asking me to make more this week. I will be pulling up some of your older post to try and make everyone happy again. Thank you!
That’s so great to hear! Thank you for sharing with us. We’re excited you’ll try more of our recipes!
This recipe is awesome! I actually crave it so much my family (which also loves it) is getting annoyed! We love the amazing flavour and how simple it is to throw together. Definitely a keeper!
Thank you, Giselle! That makes us happy 🙂
I’m guessing a tsp or so of gochujang would be an appropriate substitute for the crushed red pepper?
Great idea!
Since I am not familiar with Korean food, it would be helpful to have serving suggestions at the end of the recipe. I.e; what other items you serve it with? Sometimes having the right dish to go with can make a big difference in whether or not you like the recipe.
You can serve with rice (or veggies) as pictured. 🙂
This is so good! And sooooo easy to make!!
Great to hear, Jane!
Just made this today with ground turkey and it is delicious! Thanks for sharing the recipe.
Yum! Thanks for sharing.
This is a massive hit in our house. I also have success freezing this in portions on rice for hubby who works away to heat for dinner. I usually make four times the amount so we get dinner, left over lunches and some in the freezer for hubby. Thankyou for shearing this recipe x
That’s awesome Rosana! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much for such an amazing recipe. I am officially obsessed 🙂
I enjoy it plain as written, and also sometimes use it as a filling in a meat pastry which is also delicious.
You can check out my full review of it here–>

hi, chungah! long time follower, first time commenting. love this recipe so hard. i’ve made it countless times. its great with ground turkey, and i always use gochugaru (bc korean spice is life…and my mom left me an xl mason jar full in my freezer – not mad!). thank you for recipes that remind me of my favorite meals growing up.
That’s awesome Helen! Thanks for sharing.
My favorite recipe of yours so far. So easy and delicious! Thank you so much for sharing!!
Our pleasure!
Delicious and ridiculously easy to make, thanks for sharing!
Of course Rebecca! Thank you for sharing!
This was an amazing dinner experience. I will be adding this to our normal rotation. Easy and delicious. Thank you for sharing this.
Awesome to hear Steve! Thank you 🙂
Made 2 versions of this last night. One with ground beef and one with vegetarian crumble for my daughter. Both were absolutely delicious. Will make this regularly.
Awesome Tish! Glad it worked as a vegetarian version as well!
i used ground wagyu beef, reduced the sugar, splashed some cooking wine and added carrot strips and mushrooms and they are DIVINE! you can eat it alone or pair it with spinach pita bread. A great way to finish off left over ground beef.=)
Great additions/substitutions Diana, so glad you enjoyed it so much!
Do you think vegan beef crumbles would be okay?
To be honest, I have never tried vegan beef crumbles before so it’s hard to say!
Let me say, it was “Damn Delicious” I served it with Teriyaki Rice with celery added. Next time I will probably add more veggies. But it was good to the last forkful
This is very similar to a dish my friend Okie from Indonesia taught me to make. Just use Indonesian Ketjap (sweet soy sauce) instead of brown sugar and soy sauce. It is more delicious. Also, I add about a pound of bean sprouts to the burger and Ketjap. It is so good.
I make this recipe regularly for my family. I double the batch for a family of 4 and we seldom have much left over. I use sriracha instead of red pepper flakes – and I use quite a bit – 2-3 tablespoons at least. Also, I use the stir in ginger paste from Kroger (easy to use) and I use a lot of that too – I would say a tablespoon plus. I also use a bit more garlic than this recipe calls for. I make the rice in the instant pot and it is all ready at the same time. My youngest son says our house always smells like PF Chang’s when I make this. Highly recommend this recipe!!
This is the ginger I use:
https://www.kroger.com/p/gourmet-garden-ginger-stir-in-paste/0087520800068
I put one third the sugar and triple the ginger and it turned out well. It would have been way too sweet the original way.
The recipe is so easy and tastes sooo good! Had to pull something out in a pinch because dinner plans changed so ended up eating home and this fit the bill to a T. Added onions and tricolor peppers for more colors and texture. Omitted the red pepper flakes as cooking for kids as well. It’s such an amazing recipe..thanks so much for sharing! Definitely in the meal rotation now!
Ok, my husband and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE this meal! We use sushi rice instead, just preference. We’ve used regular rice in the past.
Have you thought about a left-over dish for this? We always have extra and as happy as I am with leftovers, I’m not creative enough to turn it in to something else. Just a thought! Thanks!
The leftovers are still just as good!
I have made this a few times now. Its officially been added to dinner rotation. Tonight I tossed everything into the slowcooker and used ground turkey. I serve with peppers ans onions, its a great weeknight meal!
Can you substitute worcestshire sauce for soy sauce?
Unfortunately, without further recipe testing, I cannot answer with certainty. As always, please use your best judgment regarding substitutions and modifications.
Ok thankyou 🙂
This is one of my all time favorite recipes. So easy, fast, and delicious! Kid and husband approved. 🙂 There is never a scrap leftover. I always make it with some roasted broccoli. Thanks so much! I am currently making your one pot stuffed pepper casserole…Love your recipes!
We are allergic to sesame, is there anything I can substitute for the sesame oil? I’d just leave the seeds out. Thanks!
You can omit.
Thank you!! At last a beef dish that my two year old enjoyed and ate willingly!
This was delicious the last time I made it! I substituted the beef for ground veggie meat and the rice for riced cauliflower for an incredibly low carb/low calorie meal and it was amazing! I also added some veggies to it. However, this time I am all out of brown sugar…can I substitute it for white sugar or honey?
Absolutely!
I enjoyed the base of this recipe. I used ground deer (yay friends who are generous!) and doubled the sauce since I added a pound of mushrooms and a bag of frozen veggies. My darn wellness coach was 50% veggies + 25% protein and 25% carbs; I don’t think I was quite there, but at least it isn’t McDonalds!
This is in regular rotation at our house, as are a few of your recipes. I have a 4 year old and 3 year old so I usually omit any spices (and I always feel red pepper flakes won’t distribute evenly and someone will end up with occasionally spicy bites so when I do add spice it’s powered or siracha) but tonight I felt maybe it needed SOME for balance so I put in a pinch of chili powder. My son recently saw an exhibit at our children’s museum on Korea and was asking to try the food. He didn’t remember having this dish so tonight it was extra special. I’m going to try your version with sliced beef next time but in my Instant Pot. We have to have a lean Christmas this year so I’m going to tell my hubby if he has to get me something it should be your cookbook.
Can’t wait to try this out for tomorrow’s dinner. Can I use honey instead of sugar (if yes how many spoons)? What can the oyster sauce be substituted with?
TIA!
Unfortunately, without further recipe testing, I cannot answer with certainty. As always, please use your best judgment regarding substitutions and modifications.
Hi,
So glad to have found this recipe on Pintrest. My husband and i love bulgolgi, but Korean BBQ isnt very popular here. So we rarely get to eat it unless we drive nearly an hour away and go downtown. To cut back on calories, I’ve started using ground turkey meat. I made it twice in one week and am about to make it again today. I sent my parents a picture and they want some. So doing 1 dish of it for then and 1 dish for me and husband.
This looks good. I have a little one allergic to sesame seeds. Would olive oil be a good substitute?
Yes!
This is a great recipe. So good, so easy. The only substitution I do is a 1/2 tbsp. of minced ginger (jar) instead of a 1/4 tsp ground. It’s also a pretty great eggroll filling. For easy eggroll filling. Get a 16 oz bag of coleslaw mix, pour it in a large bowl. While it’s still hot (right after it’s done cooking) add the Korean beef mixture to the coleslaw mix. Add in green onions (double up on the green onions. 4 instead of 2) Blend well and let cool.
This is such a great meal while so simple! Many thanks. Merci beaucoup. This will become a staple for weeknight dinner.
You are a great inspiration to me. Being able to cook with your help makes me happy as I never fail! (I used to hate cooking!).
Merci encore. (Thanks again).
Excellent recipe! So fast to pull together and everyone in our family loves it! My husband said I could make this every week and he’d never get sick of it… so I do! 🙂
Well, I made it tonight. I can’t say that it was bad but it tasted just like the recipe it is, cheap and easy. Tasted like a bunch of sugar and salt on top of greasy which is a perfect combo for tasty ( exactly what McDonald’s does) but unfortunately not anything worthy of an entire blog post hailing its deliciousness. Tasted like a last-minute recipe submission in cooking school worthy of a d-
Made this again tonight, threw in some broccoli- YUMMMM!!!! ❤❤
I add shredded coleslaw mix too
I made this tonight with rice for me, vermicelli noodles for the hubby because he’s not a rice fan(weirdo). It was pretty good! Super quick too. The taste honestly wasn’t what I expected, but still tasted nice. It’s not spicy, but has a mild zip to it. It totally reminded Me of honey garlic spare ribs! Even hubby loved it! I’m so glad I found this recipe! I may make some tweaks next time, but this is as it is!! It’s staying on the recipe shelf for sure. Thanks for sharing! Cheers!
Just made this and got approval from my 3 picky eaters! Took 20 min start to finish, with fresh rice being made, and is a huge hit! Definitely putting this into my rotation! Thank you!!
This is one of my most favorite recipes! I mixed it up a little by using ground turkey and adding in frozen stir fry veggies. Add in those Hokkien stir fry noodles that cook in 30 seconds, and you got a full delicious healthy meal!
Stumbled upon this today while searching for a recipe for ground beef. Even 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes is too much for me! YIKES! I looked at the original recipe. I think I will try it next time with more brown sugar. Being Korean, I’m always after good Korean meals! It was decent. I’ll probably keep making it. It’s bookmarked though! My mouth is still burning. I don’t like spicy foods. Next time, I’m skipping the red pepper flakes. LOL! Also, for the record, NO, I HATE KIMCHI! LOL. I couldn’t get my hands on any ground ginger, so I’m missing that taste 🙁 Otherwise, not bad.
I’ve made this once a week since my wife found the recipe a couple of months ago, and I’m about to make it again. Used the same general recipe with a sliced up round roast and with a sliced up top sirloin steak, too, but marinated them in the mix first.
It might be my favourite meal in the rotation now. Thank you.
I made this last week – OMG it’s so amazing. Thank you so very much! I’m so glad I found your page, you’re amazing!
Is the nutrition information only for the beef or does it include the rice ? ( I am diabetic and trying to count my carbs >.<)
The nutritional information is for the beef only.
I have made this recipe many times now, and getting ready to make it again tonight. Everyone loves it, and I love how easy it is to make. Thank you so very much for your website. Every time I pin something, it takes me right to Damn Delicious. The recipes are easy to follow, and I have yet to achieve a “Pinterest fail” with them. Thanks again!
I just made this for a last minute dinner get together. I was lucky enough to have all ingredients on hand. It was meant to be! I added a bit of finely chopped red onion to the pan with the garlic, and about a teaspoon of Sriracha to the sauce. Everyone loved it! I’m definitely adding this to the meal rotation 🙂
This was absolutely amazing and so easy and quick to make. I added steamed broccoli and my kids and fiancé fell in love thank you!!!!!
Tried and loved this recipe!
I’ve made it about 3x so far, and it never fails to impress the hubs!
Obsessed – it’s definitely in our meal rotation.
I love this but i have added a few changes, I use a mix of ground turkey and ground pork. I also shred a carrot and add a couple teaspoons of diced onions into the soy mixture. I use 3 tablespoons of honey instead of the brown sugar. I let the soy mixture sit for 30 mins. to an hour before i use it. My family loves it, even my husband who hates to try new things.
Works well with ground turkey if you want to cut the fat.
Not going to lie I was skeptical about this one, I wasn’t exactly sure how it was going to turn out, but made it regardless because the comments were so positive, and it did not disappoint! And let me tell you, with a 18 month old and a 5yr old I am down with any meal that literally takes less than 20mins to make. Both kids gobbled it all up, hubby said it was delicious, and no leftovers to be found anywhere! Served over steamed rice and used siracha instead of red pepper flakes, and sautéed zucchini on the side, a perfect weeknight meal for busy families!
I made this tonight (added mushrooms and chopped onion) and it was so good!! Thank you for the delicious and easy recipe!
Absolutely love this dish! I first encountered it when I smelled someone’s dish during a dinner break when I was in class. I immediately asked what it was she was eating and how can I get the recipe! She told me about your blog, and within 2 days I was cooking it too! Delicious! I have made this a few times since then and it is a family favorite. I make two versions – beef and vegetarian, with Morningstar Farms brand recipe crumbles. My only question is, I recently discovered that I am allergic to sesame. Although I never had an allergic reaction to sesame before, I do not want to take a chance . Can you recommend an alternative? Thank you, and keep the recipes coming!
You can omit if you need to. Hope that helps!
I made this today with some changes. No sesame oil and seeds due to allergy. Instead added julienne carrots and used fresh ginger. It was delicious, everyone loved it.
Omg this is so good! I lightly sautéed some broccoli and red pepper and set that aside to add at the end and I doubled the sauce, it was so fantastic! I used sriracha in place of the chilli flakes as well. Thanks!!!
Thank you for this recipe! We have made this many times and our family loves it. We serve it with a side of sauteed bok choy – yum!
Made this today. It was super delish. I added Tofu to it, and made it with ground turkey. Thank you
This is one of our family’s favorite simple meals! Thank you!
I make this at least a few times a month and I tell everyone else they should make it. We love it, I have 2 little guys and they love it too. I use real grated ginger instead and sometimes I add cilantro and hot sauce to mine. Excellent recipe thanks so much
I love this recipe so much! It’s easy, affordable, and delicious and makes me feel like I ate out. Thanks for sharing. 🙂
This is one of my favorite things to make when I want something easy but delicious! So easy to add in some veggies to with with it. 🙂
I made this last night and did not make any changes. It was DELICIOUS! Thanks for sharing another fantastic recipe.
I struggle with money so things like this are great. I often make a savoury mince and mix it with rice, but I wanted something different. I made a couple of changes to mine. I used mixed porn and beef mince so it had the beefy flavour but the pork added tenderness. I also wanted to make it a little more nutritious so I slightly reduced the sugar content and added a small onion and a couple of finely sliced bell peppers which also added a fresh and fruity layer to the incredibly savoury sesame.
For the love of God! That’s meant to say “pork”!!! I can’t edit it.
Omg, that’s too funny though! Gotta love autocorrect!
Not sure what to replace the sugar with (seeing honey is a good alternative), but I will definitely try some things and get back to you. The recipe looks amazing and I plan on trying it out tonight!
Let’s see how this baby goes!
I love your blog and have discovered so many delicious recipes here. It is seriously one of my top go-to places for yummy dishes. 🙂 For that reason, I wondered if you could adjust some of your ads and videos? In recent months, your recipe pages have become so much harder to load and scroll through. Thanks for all of your work developing these awesome meals.
I made this last night and it was really good! The only thing I did differently was use more sauce. I also don’t drain my ground beef, because there’s usually not a lot to drain, but this does make it a little more oily.
Since I live alone, I had a little left over today and decided to make a little snack with it. The snack was not healthy, but it was so delicious that I highly recommend. I made a crepe batter and mixed in a little gojuchang before creating a really thin crepe. I then heated the beef with a bit of water and butter until all the water evaporated (extra browning/caramelizing on the beef) and mixed up a bit of sriracha mayo. I placed the beef, sriracha mayo, and green onions on the crepe and folded up like a burrito. Then I garnished my plate with a few drops of chili sesame oil and a tiny sprinkle of Chinese five spice (on the side only). It was truly amazing. If you’re not afraid to eat a little rich here and there, I highly recommend you try.
Thanks so much for the delicious recipe. My little snack invention wouldn’t have been possible without it! 🙂
I’m usually good with checking my spelling on things, but apparently *gochujang is incorrectly spelled so often that the incorrect spelling pops in Google’s predictive search! This is my excuse for the misspelling above. 😉
Super tasty recipe! I added a half of a bag of shredded carrots at the same time as the sauce and let it simmer the last couple minutes. Gave it a nice crunch and added a veggie to make it a complete meal.
Just came across your site tonight and so happy I found you, Chungah! This dish was so incredibly simple to make and my family loved it. There were no leftovers whatsoever, and my kids want it for dinner again tomorrow night! I stuck to the recipe as written and it was perfect. The only thing I did different was to add some steamed broccoli along with the green onions and sesame seeds at the end. Thank you for a great recipe!
This is so delicious and easy! I love to top my bowl with lots of cilantro, either peanuts or cashews, Sriracha, and a squeeze of lime. Really good over brown rice, or cauliflower rice.
Sounds amazing!
You SAVED me the other night! Now it’s going to be a school lunch!! My son is on a three-day food rotation diet for subclinical allergies and I needed something FAST 3 days ago. This was SUCH a hit. My child is a bit picky and protein is hard to get him to eat. He loves traditional bulgogi (which I had time to make over the last weekend.), but did;t have the time or beef to make on a weeknight. I have NEVER seen my child eat like this… What a hit! A million thank yous!
Sounds delicious. Can I add Korean chili paste (gochujang) instead of the red pepper flakes?
Yes, absolutely!
Made it, loved it. Thank you for sharing.
I totally did that too! I adjusted the amount a but up when I swapped in the gochujang
Do you think it would taste as good with ground turkey?
Yes, absolutely.
I made this for my son’s basketball team and it was a huge hit. I’ve actually made it 3 times in 2 days since so many others wanted to ty it too. Everyone loved it and three people asked for the recipe. I doubled the sauce and used Sriracha instead of the red pepper flakes, but those are the only changes I made. We’ll be making this often!
Just made this and my family of 4 LOVED it! My kids are 14 and 11 and we all probably could have had bigger portions or gone back for seconds but there wasn’t enough so next time I will need to make more. Also, I thought I had ground beef on hand but it was actually pork so I just used that and it was really good. I’ll try it with ground beef next time though. Thanks for a delicious, quick recipe. This will definitely be one of my go-to weeknight dinners.
Chungah,
I just wanted to write a general ‘thank you’ for sharing your talent! I cannot wait to make this tonight because I have yet to make a recipe of yours I didn’t love. This may sound silly but your recipes have really helped teach me many basics of cooking and as a new mom that’s been invaluable! My toddler (and husband) thank you!
I look forward to gifting your cookbook some day to all new moms looking for decious, healthy and beautifully simply meals to feed their families!
Many thanks again!
Made this tonight. Delicious and easy!
Hi. Making this for dinner tonight and dang it! I have no brown sugar. Will white sugar work? Also, has anyone tried freezing this?
Yes and yes!
I made this tonight (and am still eating this as I’m writing) and wow! Easy and delicious!! My family love it too, which is great! Thanks so much for such a wonderful recipe!
Looks amazing! Just wondering if there is a sub for the brown sugar? Thanks!
Unfortunately, without further recipe testing, I cannot answer with certainty. As always, please use your best judgment regarding substitutions and modifications.
We substitute honey for the brown sugar and we really like how it turns out.
Made it and loved it! I made something like this a few times but never really had a strict recipe so it would always come out a bit different since the last. (I never write anything down-I keep telling myself to write it down but..) I do use garlic/ginger paste (use it last-do not cook) and I use red curry paste..(cook it with the meat.
This has become a go-to meal for us. We loved it from the first time we tried it and it is so easy and quick to make and really tastes great! The only thing we have changed is that we add broccoli. Thank you so much for posting this!
This was a wonderful dish. My whole family enjoyed this. May add some extra vegies next time, but otherwise a perfect recipe. Thank you. Will be a regular in our house now.
Just made this and the family LOVED it! Only thing I will do differently next time is double the recipe! We have no leftovers!
I will also try adding some veggies next time. Fantastic flavor!
I’m going to go and check out some of your other recipes!
Thank you!
Super-delicious! Had to restrain myself from eating the whole thing in one sitting. Although a little too salty for me (maybe the brand of soy sauce – it wasn’t a reduced sodium kind) so I will try substituting half of the soy sauce with some low sodium broth or water next time. Great quick recipe that gives the flavors you’re looking for without all the time marinating, slicing and grilling, etc. 🙂 Love your blog and look forward to trying some of your other yummy-looking recipes. Omissions/substitutions: didn’t have any sesame seeds and didn’t really miss them; didn’t have red pepper flakes so added dash of cayenne pepper instead; coconut oil used instead of vegetable.
I don’t know what I’m missing but I found nothing special about this dish. Yes, it was easy to make but it was way too sweet and that’s with way more red pepper flakes and siracha then called for. I will not make this again as it was not worth eating.
I’m sorry that this recipe did not turn out the way you had imagined. I only post recipes that have been successfully tested in my own kitchen, and as you can see from the comments here, many of these readers have had great outcomes in the final dish as well. However, I understand that we all have different taste preferences, and I really appreciate your honest feedback.
Also, if the recipe is too sweet to taste, you can always reduce the amount of sugar as needed. Isn’t that the beauty of home cooking? 🙂
Made this tonight after a long day, and it was SO good! Took virtually no time at all to make, very little clean-up, and was delicious! A big WIN in my book. I will definitely be making this again 🙂 I think next time I’ll add some veggies, too!
I made this for the 2nd time last night and the whole family LOVED it; this includes a 10, 7, and 2 year old boys. I followed the recipe exactly. Everyone wanted seconds so I’ll have to make double next time to so we have leftovers.
I made this for dinner tonight and it was delicious! Totally satisfied my Korean bbq cravings 😉 I opted for honey instead of sugar and tahini instead of sesame oil and it turned out perfect. Took the advice from other comments and mixed in some shredded carrot before adding the sauce. Served it with shredded cabbage on top, some nice fresh lettuce leaves (for wrapping) from the garden and sriracha. Yummo!
I found this recipe maybe 2 or 3 months ago and it has been in our regular rotation ever since. It is so good even my kids ask for seconds! We love it!
I’ve never left a recipe review again (all seem to exclaim how they hated a recipe—then list 1,000 changes they made, rendering what they made nothing even resembling the published recipe!) This one, though, deserves kudos. Today is Saturday. I made it for dinner on Thursday, and my son loved it so much he asked for it again the next night–in sufficient quantity to have it around all the time for lunches, etc. He’s got a good palate, and is well-versed in different cuisines, and cannot get ENOUGH of this stuff. (Right now, there’s a big Tupperware with four pounds of it—I won’t even venture to guess how quickly it will be devoured.)
My daughter, who verges precariously close to a picky eater, loves it, too.
But it was my son’s first reaction that got me: “This is the most delightful thing you’ve added for as long as I can remember. Please make it a staple. ” (I’m not kidding. Those were his exact words. Not that he’s a toddler or anything–but it was high praise, indeed.) And every single serving he’s had since then? It’s been punctuated with similar accolades, attempts to extract promises from me to always have ingredients on hand, and lots of, “Mmmmm—this is SO GOOD. You’ve gotta keep this stuff around!”
I’m a chef. It’s not like my family is starving or does not get good food. Seriously! This is really, really good. It’s rare I use a recipe or more than an idea to use as a springboard, but I made this as written—the only exception being that I had a knob of fresh ginger I wanted to use up, and subbed it for the dried. This is DAMN DELICIOUS just as written. THANK YOU!
Thank you for this amazing recipe!!! This has become a staple for our family, and I make it about every other week. The whole family LOVES it. I usually reduce the sugar by about 1/2 and I add some fish sauce. So quick and delicious.
I’m pretty amazed to see so many positive comments on a single recipe! I’m making this tonight as it fits in with my diet, and I’m hoping that it’s as delicious as it sounds. It looks too easy haha.
We love this recipe at our home and I actually make this at least once a week, my kids LOVE it, I add broccoli to it and it’s delicious!
Hi,
Just wanna let you know the link to your video is broken. Tried refreshing the page to see if it would help, but it didn’t.
Thanks for letting me know, Gen. I apologize that it was not working for you – I just checked the video and it seems to be working right now! 🙂
I was really happy with this recipe, instead of putting it over rice I topped it over your everyday ramen, and instead of sesame oil I opted to substitute it with olive oil and toast sesame seeds to extract the flavor out of them
I used sriracha instead of garlic and pepper flakes, and fresh ginger in the sauce with a little extra water. I also garnish with fresh jalapeno and cilantro, and serve it with steamed broccoli and carrots. It’s a family favorite!
Just made the Korean Beef bowl for my family of 5 and LOVED it. Easy and FULL of flavor. First recipe I have used off your blog, but we will definitely be back!
FYI, we are also the proud owners of 2 Corgies. Have to be the best dogs on earth!
Hilary
I’m making this again today. It is easy. All recipes should be this easy AND this good. Nothing I hate more than bland salt and pepper recipes. This is amazing. I bought a medium spice jar of toasted sesame seeds to keep in my pantry and just got a jar of ground ginger. Not a ginger fan but it works here nicely. I’ll cook up some jasmine rice in my rice cooker (20 year old one from my mom…LOL). Dinner time. I’m making three pounds of ground meat for the savages, I mean kids. And omgosh, I can’t wait to buy your cookbook. I keep checking every week and I know it’s not til September but I keep hoping the gods would grant me one wish.
So thrilled to have found this recipe! Wanted something new and not so heavy. My only regret was there weren’t any leftovers for me to take to work the next day. It was worth the jaunt to the grocery store, I was out of soy sauce. But it fed everyone and put a smile on their face. This will definitely become a part of my go to recipes! Thanks for sharing!
This recipe is great! Simple but wonderful. Thank you very much.
I made this for my Fiance who was stationed in Korea. He loved it! I doubled the sauce and added some cornstarch. I also used Chili Garlic Paste in the sauce. It’s a winner!
I have made this a few times and I have to remember to make a double batch or my husband and two boys will complain.
This meal is fantastic! I subbed ground turkey but followed everything else. Super delicious. Tonight I’m going to add in some shredded cabbage for crunch and serve it atop cauliflower rice. Would you by chance have the nutritional info on this? I’d love a calorie count if possible. Thanks for the great recipes!
Nutritional information is provided only for select and new recipes at this time. However, if it is not available for a specific recipe, I recommend using free online resources at your discretion (you can Google “nutritional calculator”) to obtain such information.
435 calories a serving to be exact.
I have tried many recipes from your blog and have loved them all! I thought I’d write a note that I love this recipe- but 10x more now than my sister told me about how she makes it. In addition to the beef mixture (which she also adds sauteed zucchini and mushrooms to), she serves it over vermicelli noodles, and tops it all with grated carrots and cucumbers, and a drizzle of peanut sauce. Incredible!
I have a daughter who is allergic to sesame so I’m going to try this with another oil. What would be a good substitute? Sesame oil has such a distinct flavor, is it even possible to substitute for flavor?
You can substitute vegetable or canola oil.
Made this for my family of 5 so I doubled the recipe. 1/2 cup of brown sugar would have been too much so I stuck with 1/4 and then just doubled everything else. Still was a bit too sweet, but good. Added red pepper, onions and broccoli. Sprinkled the top with some cilantro and avocado slices. Yum!
The flavor was so much better than any other Asian recipe I have tried, they are always more work than reward is worth but not this one. Super easy and tastes great. I was a little short on soy sauce that day so I topped off the measure with Worcestershire but had everything else on hand for a last minute supper. We served the beef over a bag of mixed veggies with noodles picked up from the local grocery and it was a hit.
POWDERED Ginger?!?!? C’mon use the real deal. Completely different flavor.
No comparison between powedered and fresh.
Ground ginger and fresh ginger can be used interchangeably depending on what you have on hand.
would this be good with shitake musrooms?
Yes, absolutely!
This was delicious. I followed your recipe with only a couple minor changes, using a half teaspoon of ground chili paste instead of pepper flakes and adding a couple tablespoons of chopped cilantro after taking it off the heat. It was delicious and a great change from the usual ground beef recipes. I served it with brown rice, sesame broccoli and carrots, and homemade kimchi. It’ll go in our regular rotation, thanks!
My hubby and I both loved this. He has his with Jasmine rice and I had mine in lettuce wraps. This recipe is a keeper! Thank you.
Absolutely love this recipe! When the beef is almost done cooking, I like to add 1/2 cup of water and chopped vegetables to steam for a bit. Great way to increase your veggie intake and add moisture throughout the rice!
I love your blog Chungah!
i know this is an old post, but I just made some, serving size for one, and this is so tasty! I’ll save this to use again and again. I’m glad I found your website.
This was another really delicious recipe I’ve made from your website. All of the things I’ve tried from you are absolutely awesome!!! Most of my “go-to recipes” are from your website, Thank you 🙂
I was skeptical about this recipe, but it is sooooooooo good. It is going into my permanent rotation for sure.
Just made this recipe and it was great. However, it was a bit too sweet for my taste. Definitely plan to make again with less sugar and more red pepper.
I bow to the queen! Thank you for something quick, easy, cheap and DAMNED DELICIOUS! I’m a good cook but even my 12 year old daughter hugged me after eating this. You rock!
I’ve made this twice now and it is super delicious! I mix in a little sriracha because we like spicy but besides that, it’s absolutely perfection! This was really good with the rice and lettuce wraps! This actually vaguely reminds me of Mongolian beef.
I wanted to make this for dinner tonight i have made it once before and it was amazing. I have a question though is there anything else you can do with it. I don’t want to put it over rice again. Can you put it over pasta or something. or do you have any other good ideas. Thanks for the recipe its amazing again.
Quinoa or orzo would be a great substitute.
I think it also works well over a slaw mix.
I made this today with a couple of tweaks I omitted the red pepper flakes and the sesame oil, and in stead of using garlic and ginger I used garlic and ginger stir fry oil to fry the meet and I added in some hoisin sause to the brown sugar/soya sause mixture it turned out tasting exactly like bulgogi
My 17 year old son is making this for us for dinner tonight. I am so excited! I shared the recipe with my student who is vegetarian because I think it would be interesting to try it using beefless crumbles.
This was an amazing meal! I’m a full time student cooking for one, so making a dish that’s 4 servings means lunch for a few days and this one was easy to make and pack. I added some more green and crunch to it by steaming half green beans over my rice in the rice cooker while I cooked the beef. I recommend making a bit more sauce if you plan to add veggies though, and starting the rice a bit earlier than the meat.
This was so delicious and easy, that my husband agrees your blog is perfectly named. Loved the taste, and the leftovers made great lunch. Started the rice when I started dish and both finished up close it time. Just perfect. Thank you. I have a list of recipes that I want to try!!
I taught in Korea and there was a college kid restaurant that was delicious and cheap. They served this there and I ate it at least once a week. I cannot wait to make this!
Super delicious!!
What precent ground beef did you use and it id OK to use pure sesame oil?
I prefer to use 80/20 but you can use whichever you prefer. And yes, pure sesame oil should work just fine.
This was delicious! I added a fried egg on top of mine. Ultimate comfort food! Thanks for sharing.
I didn’t think I’d like this one because for some reason the sauce does not taste good to me by itself. But once combined with the beef, it’s amazing. I added only a splash of rice wine vinegar to the sauce because I like the flavor of it, but the recipe is fantastic by itself. It’s great to get the flavor of Korean Beef without all of the work, one of the easiest dinner recipes to make from this site. Even easier if you have a rice cooker..!
I was dubious because I never had no-marinade bulgogi (on principle as a Korean!), but the flavor was excellent! Took me longer to make b/c I didn’t have ground beef – had to use some short rib meat. Added some onions. But otherwise, fantastic meal for the family!
This was so quick and easy and even the kids liked it! Will definitely be a regular on the dinner rotation! Thanks!
I made this tonight. How. What. Where do I begin?? So EASY and fast ! I didn’t have any green onion on hand but it didn’t take away from the recipe flavored. I added cilantro just cuz I had that instead of the green onion. I’m in LOVE!! I made brown rice to go with it and I could eat the entire dish by myself, I would never have thought of creating something like this but I love these flavored! AND your site! You are soooo creative and thank you for your recipes!!!! You are a true inspiration to me! ❤️
This was incredibly delicious! I will definitely be making again!
Thank you for this awesome recipe! Everyone in my family LOVES it! It’s now a regular in my line up of recipes.
This is DELICIOUS! My husband and kids (ages 10 and 12) loved it. My husband said it tastes just like typical korean beef dishes (in a good way!). This is now a regular in our meal rotation. I serve it with roasted or steamed broccoli or green beans. In fact, I’m doubling it tonight so we can have it again tomorrow. My friend has very picky kids and they loved it too.
Made this for me and my DH. Tonight. Was one of the easiest Asian dishes I have ever made. So flavorful. This will definitely be one I will make again. Thanks for posting this.
I have been waiting two long days to make this! I love that I have all the pantry ingredients. Plan to serve with rice and fresh asparagus, with Sirachi on the side. I think dinner will be early tonight!
This was so easy, so fast, it’s awesome! It will be a regular in my meal rotation. The second time I made it, I forgot to get more rice at the store and served it over udon noodles. Still great. It’s almost too sweet for my husband tho, so now when I make it I had about a half tbsp to a table spoon of rice vinegar or fish sauce to it. Thanks for the awesome meal
This was very easy and so good. I added shredded cabbage to it which was really good. Thanks for sharing. Tamara
This was amazing. My kids loved it. I normally don’t change a recipe the first time I make it, (And then comment on my changed dish) but I didn’t have sesame oil. So, I used coconut oil. Otherwise, I stuck to the recipe, and we didn’t have leftoverd for lunch tomorrow. 🙁
I have never commented on a food blog before but I have made this for the third time in the past two months and it’s a hit every time. My husband loves it and eats almost the entire pot every time. I never have leftovers. lol. I don’t deviate from the recipe at all. I only add sriracha because we love spicy!
I made this tonight for dinner. I had to substitute some of the ingredients due to not having some things on hand but OMG this was delicious! So good.
Thanks
I’ve been coming back to this recipe for about a year now. I make a huge batch at least monthly. Everyone loves it! I serve it with skinny rice noodles and cucumber salad made in the spiralizer with lime juice and fish sauce dressing. It’s lovely. Leftovers get taken for lunch the next day. Thank you for great, simple ideas.
Wow! This was so easy, quick and delicious! I made it as is and served with brown rice and broccoli. I can’t wait to try some of your other recipes!!! 🙂
I took this recipe and made burgers out of it. Fantastic!
I found this recipe by googling “easy ground beef recipe.” It was just what I was looking for: fantastic tasting and so easy to make. We all cleaned our plates, including my 9-year-old. The only thing I did differently was add broccoli, which I highly recommend! If you love Asian food, like I do, make this dish! Thank you!
This recipe was so delicious. They only difference was that i used soy crumbles instead of beef and it worked great. This one is a definite keeper. Keep them coming 😉
This is absolutely delicious. I have never commented on a recipe before but this one is so outstanding I had to. Thanks for sharing, I will use this often.
This is very much like an Indonesian dish I make, just add fresh bean sprouts and serve over rice. Love it ! : )
This is amazing! Just as promised easy to make and delicious. Made a double batch and froze half…cant wait to eat it again. Yum!
This is sooooo good!! Next time I’m making double!!
This was SO good! And so easy! My daughter and her two friends (they are 12) devoured it. I should have doubled the recipe.
I tried this with ground pork and added sliced onion and leftover cooked cabbage. It was yummy.
I made this tonight for dinner it was AMAZING! We only eat gluten free so I had to use a gluten free soy sauce, I also substituted tahini for the sesame oil (I was out of oil). Thank you!
Thank you so much! This was delious!
OMG! This is soooooooo good. I had taken out ground beef for dinner and the last thing I wanted was meat loaf. So I found this. It was amazing. I added a little lemon to the rice. Next time I make this I may add more veggie to the meat just because it was so good.
Thanks for a great and easy recipe!
This was so delicious. The only complaint that my family and I had was that it wasn’t spice enough but that’s nothing some extra chili flakes and hot sauce can’t fix. It’s a great last minute throw something together dinner.
I’m a Malaysian living in Ohio–made this tonight. It was SO STINKIN’ GOOD that I HAD to post a comment although I almost never comment on blog recipes. I’m so impressed with how complex the flavor is given the simple ingredients and the whole 15 mins it took to prep! Perfect for a work night. I’ll be making this again… and again… and again. Thanks!
My husband and I just made this for dinner. It was yummy! So simple to prepare. We will definitely make it again. Thank you!
Cery easy and tasty dish. Even my stubborn 4 yo was eating it. Only thing i would change is adding some veggies to it. Other that that, great recipe
Really enjoyed this. My husband says it’s going into the dinner rotation.
I had some fresh ground beef on hand, plus all the other ingredients yeaaa. I needed to make something quick for my husband so I found your recipe. My husband isn’t picky at all! He just eats and won’t say much, but said: That was actually really good! Lol, thanks again I’m hugging you through the computer. 🙂
This looks amazing! But would it taste any different if I used ground turkey??
Ground turkey would be a great substitute!
Wow, this recipe tastes amazing, quick and easy to prepare too! My daughters loved it. The only complaint was that there was not enough left over for their lunches tomorrow
I’ve made this twice now, and it’s amazing. So easy and so delicious! We like more sauce, so I doubled the sauce. Will be great with any vegetables mixed in. I think I’ll saute up some green peppers and add them to the mix. Yum! Thanks for such an easy, great recipe.
This was very good, very easy, and just the ticket for “I’m too tired to fuss” work nights. I did use fresh ginger (well, fresh from the jar…) and Sriracha instead of the red pepper flakes. Will definitely make again…great flavors.
Love this blog…
Made it in 15 minutes and everyone thought it was great!!
super yummi! Made this in Germany tonight, wish I had more 😀
This was posted on a FB page a few months ago and I finally made it tonight. It was absolutely wonderful!!
I absolutely love this recipe. I first tried it about a year ago and it has since become a staple in my kitchen. Tonight I added chopped onion and shredded carrot for some additional color. Thanks so much for sharing this recipe!
We LOVED this! It’s definitely going to be in the rotation!
This recipes is now a family favorite! We’ve made this a half a dozen times, and our 3 kids (not to mention me and my wife) can’t get enough of it! We usually add whatever fresh (or frozen) veggies we have on hand to make the dish stretch. We absolutely love it! Thank you so much for sharing it!
This dish was a hit! I love that it’s reminiscent of bulgogi but with a lighter feeling.
I made this recipe last night, it was very flavoursome however it was just too sweet for us. I will definitely use less sugar if we cook it again. I am going to try the beef and broccoli slow cooker recipe tonight – I will add less sugar and then taste after to see if it needs more. Great recipes 🙂
This is so good! And my whole family liked it, something which rarely happens. I know I will serve this often!
I hate it when people change half the things in a recipe and then comment, but I did just that today and it was delish! I added onion, celery, and red pepper and decided to double the sauce because of it. The soy sauce bottle didn’t have enough in it for a double recipe so I used 1/4 cup oyster sauce. So good! We had it on rice, but I think I will use the leftovers in chow mein tomorrow with lots of stir fried veggies and noodles.
Thanks for the awesome recipe!
I just made this for dinner tonight….whooooooooo weeeeeeee! We LOVE bulgogi here, so trying this “cheater” recipe with ground beef was such a great idea!!! My 14 year old sons can’t wait to eat it…..we’re waiting on roasted broccoli. Thank you!!
My family really enjoyed this. Spicey and sweet! Will make again.
Oh my. . I made this last night and it was simply amazing. Quick and easy for a weeknight. Everyone wanted seconds and my husband went back for thirds. I paired it with brown rice, egg rolls and broccoli.
Has anyone tried it with ground turkey?
The flavor was so delicious! I will definitely use the ingredients for the flavoring again however I will probably try strips of beef and maybe some broccoli along with the rice, I’m not a big fan of the consistency of the ground beef with rice. Thanks for sharing this recipe it has given me a great idea for a new dish!
This was PERFECT for us! I am a busy mom who works and goes to school and I will definitely be putting this in our dinner rotation. A nice salad with ginger dressing goes perfectly as a side!
A very good recipe! Thank you for posting it! YUM!
My husband and I absolutely LOVE this dish. It is so quick and easy and it’s damn delicious! 🙂 I’m making it again tonight and putting it in lettuce cups. YUM.
WOW!!! I really needed something new to use my ground beef so a quick google search brought me here and I’M SO GLAD it did! I made this recipe and took the comments into consideration. I doubled the sauce recipe, and added roasted broccoli (with olive oil and fresh garlic), fresh mushrooms and double the green onions. It was amazing!! The flavor was great. Many of the other comments mentioned a fight over left overs…….NOT in my house because there weren’t any! SO YUMMY!!!
Made this tonight using ground turkey and it was amazing. Thanks for the recipe !
“In a small bowl, whisk together brown sugar, soy sauce, sesame oil, red pepper flakes and ginger.” (Do I stir this into the ground beef when it turns into brown and after i drained the excess fat?)
Yes, that’s correct. This is referred to as the “soy sauce mixture” here:
Stir in soy sauce mixture and green onions until well combined, allowing to simmer until heated through, about 2 minutes.
There are so many comments on this recipe that it seems silly to add yet another, but I thought there might be others out there with the same questions about it as I had. I have gestational diabetes and am on a very strict diet that requires ridiculous amounts of protein, and i’m always looking for another way to get enough in that actually appeals to me. So I had to modify this recipe to make it fit my diet needs. Instead of sugar I used unsweetened applesauce, and was worried it wouldn’t taste as good, but it was still delicious! I had to have it over a ton of veggies instead of the rice but that worked out just fine too. i also used Sriracha instead of red pepper flakes, just because I really like Sriracha, and used the less sodium soy sauce. i’m sure that the original version of the recipe is really great but for those of us that need to modify, it still works out just fine. Thanks Chungah!!
This sounds like a good way to use ground beef, besides hamburgers. Besides rice or lettuce cups, what vegetables would you recommend as a side?
Kimchi would be the perfect accompaniment to this dish! 🙂
The beef in your picture has a very fine grind to it- do you grind it yourself or have your butcher grind it down? Usually mine is a lot coarser!
I prefer to purchase ground beef either from Whole Food’s or Trader Joe’s.
This recipe so
rocks !!!!!….even better done with pork..a fave in our house…
I’m going to start by saying I just made this for dinner and I love you recipe.
I’ve been in the military for years and have spent time in Korea as well as have many friends who’s wives are from Korea and have eaten a lot of authentic Korean food, bulgogi being by far my favorite. I have a Korean BBQ restaurant I frequent just to get my bulgogi “fix”.
That being said, your recipe tastes very authentic, especially for being a knock-off version. I’m so happy with this recipe especially since it will save me money on eating out.
I did make one tiny adjustment, I doubled the amount of sauce because typically with bulgogi BBQ you take the little bits of meat and sauce left towards the end of the meal and mix it in rice to make a “soup” out of it and it’s one of the best things about bulgogi. The rice sops up all the liquid and has such a magnificent flavor. So I served mine similar to yours except I poured all the extra sauce over top of it to make it similar to the end of meal “soup”.
Oh, did I say thank you?
Turned out freaking delicious! I had to swap red pepper flakes for a little cayenne pepper since I was out, and I used low sodium soy sauce instead of the regular stuff since my family isn’t a fan of salty things. Also added some edamame at the last minute for a pop of color and some more veggies. Not too salty, not too sweet, very quick to make. I’m a college student back home from university for summer, but I know I’ll be more than happy to make this after a long day of classes and work.
Yummy-yum-yum! I made this tonight and it was a total hit! I used 2lbs of ground beef but didn’t double the rest of the recipe, I did this to make it less sweet and it came out perfect. I used coconut aminos instead of soy sauce and coconut aminos are a little sweeter so that helped, I also added a bit more ginger to taste since there was more meat. I’m so glad I read the comments first, I went and bought TOASTED sesame oil rather than using the regular sesame oil I already had, I could really taste the toastiness (not a real word) and I loved it. Next time I will add carrot matchsticks and serve over shredded cabbage.
This was great. Mine came up a little to the dry side. I would like to know what and how I would add some vegetables. I didn’t have sesame oil on hand, so I just used canola oil. I love how quick it is, and I loved the test.
Thank you for trying my recipe! But was the meat overcooked? It certainly should not have a dry outcome. You can also add veggies such as broccoli, bell peppers, and various other stir-fry type veggies. It may be best to saute them first and set them aside to make sure they are not overcooked.
made this at the beginning of the week, for the first time, and am making it again tonight :). It was so delicious!! Even my “I don’t like rice” kid ate it up!
Is it dry ground ginger?
Yes, that’s exactly right.
Found this recipe to use up my ground beef. It’s delicious and my kids literally devoured it! It is so easy and really flavorful. I skipped the red pepper flakes, my kids are 1 and 3, and added carrots. I will definite;y make this again and again.
I made this and it was delicious! I eyeballed the red pepper flakes which in my house means shake until it’s completely red. The extra heat was really good!
Mine felt a little dry and I wonder if it’s because I used fresh grated ginger since I didn’t have ground ginger. Could the fibers of the ginger have made the meat have a dryer texture the way lemongrass sometimes does to some proteins?
What kind of meat did you use? I have found that 80/20 ground beef is the most flavorful.
I love the flavor and simplicity of this dish! I tweaked it a bit:
I cooked the meat through and drained excess fat before adding finely chopped 4 garlic and 4 shiitake mushrooms! added the same sauce mix
I cooked grilled onions, broccoli, and carrots separately from the meat and used as toppings.
I also added a poached egg! it was heavenly!
I just made this today and it was delicious!!! I will definitely be making it again.
This recipe was a hit with the family at dinner tonight! I was looking for something that combined the ingredients I wanted to use up in my refrigerator- 1 lb. ground elk, fresh ginger root, green onion, and garlic. I was thinking of some kind of teriyaki-like concoction with a lot of sauce using those ingredients, but I’m so glad I came across you recipe instead! It was great with ground elk, which I have a ton of after hunting season and always need new and interesting ways to prepare. This is a winner to add to my pinterest recipe box. Thanks!
Made this twice – first time same as your recipe. Tonight I used sirloin steak and added an orange pepper. Delicious both times but better tonight. I feel like it needs the pepper and maybe I’ll add mushrooms next time too. But really, really delicious!!
I made this and added 1 Red Bell pepper chopped into square chunks, 1 head of baby bok choy (I will add 2 baby bok choy heads next time), whole white mushrooms cut into slices, and 1/2 lb of beef as well as all of the other ingredients and green onions. It was delicious. You could probably use the whole pound of beef, but I would make some extra sauce so that you have some for the rice. It was so good, my husband has been waiting for me to make a good asian dish, the others were sub par…this one was Excellent! Thanks for the recipe. 🙂
Just finished making this and it is the best thing I have ever made. Thank you!!! Yummmm.
I have tried various Korean restaurants since my deployment to Korea and they have not hit the mark. This recipe flooded my taste buds with the EXACT flavor I had been craving since I left Korea. Thank you so much for sharing this will definitely become a staple in my household.
I have made this several times already. My husband actually texts me from work and asks me to make it for dinner. 😀 We love it. Thanks for sharing. I have also used 7% lean ground turkey in place of beef when I didn’t have any, and it turned out great!
really easy and really yummy! the only change i made was to use fresh ginger instead of powdered. i served it over brown rice and steamed broccoli. my hubby LOVED it, he even ate it TWO nights in a row!!!! (which is actually saying a lot cuz i typically can’t get him to eat leftovers ever) next time i am going to try it with ground turkey since i am not a big beef fan, but this recipe is definitley going into the regular dinner rotation 🙂
I just made this recipe. Wow, came together so fast and tastes delish, too!
I made this for dinner for my family and all my kids ate it, even the toddler who is a very picky eater.
I made this last night, and it was DELICIOUS. Somehow I had all the ingredients, go figure. I just cut the red pepper and ginger down a little to make it less spicy for my kids. I ate the leftovers for lunch, definitely going to make it again!
I made this with ground pork and this was awesome!
This recipe is so good! I made it for my family the other night and everyone enjoyed it. I use brown rice and it was perfect with your recipe! I didn’t have the green onions at home so couldn’t use them but my husband and I added Sriracha to ours. Can’t wait to try more of your recipes. 🙂
made this recipe for my family tonight. I couldn’t believe how easy this was to make! the longest part was cooking the rice; I used brown rice, so it took about 45 minutes. it was a huge hit! not a bit left over. the only change I made was subbing Sriracha for the red pepper flakes. while everyone found it super delicious, my dad even went back for seconds (he is notorious for hating anything remotely of asian descent), I found it a bit too sweet. so I think next time I’ll cut back on the brown sugar a bit.
overall, an amazing recipe. as always, thank you for taking the time to share this recipe and making it accessible for self-taught cooks, like myself!
I’m not going to lie, I wasn’t very optimistic when I bookmarked this recipe, and thought it’d be something to use up some ground meat and call it dinner. But oh my goodness. This was surprisingly flavorful and easy. I made a couple small changes and made it with some Chinese egg noodles. This is something I can just push into my weekly menu plan when I’m drawing a blank. And I can already tell it’s going to be so versatile for any bit of ground meat and veggies in the fridge. I think I may even teach the fiance to make it for nights when I’m not up to cooking.
I made this for lunch today. It was really good. I followed the recipe exactly except I used low sodium soy sauce instead of regular. I also doubled the sauce because we like it saucy. This will be going in the rotation. Yummy!
I made this this evening and it was so good! I’m sorry to say there are no leftovers 🙁
The only change I made was to use fresh ginger, because for once I actually have fresh in the house, and not the dry spice version. Next time I think I’ll make a double batch so we have some leftovers. Oh yes…I cheated even more by using frozen jasmine rice from Trader Joe’s.
This is insanely good! I’ve started making it with chicken when we don’t have ground turkey/beef and it is still really yummy!
This recipe is great! Quick and easy and tastes really good. I used ground turkey instead and did it once with white rice and then a couple times with brown – all times were great! I also doubled the sauce and it was even better! Thank you for sharing!
LOVED this. I have to comment (which I have actually never done on any recipe…) since this is the tenth recipe of yours I’ve made. Great flavor. I added green beans and a red bell pepper plus spicy sesame oil instead of plain… could’ve eaten the whole batch but saved some for lunch tomorrow. Yum.
This dish was awesome & different! Very easy to prepare. The only thing I will do differently the next time I make this is to add a little salt to the ground beef as it’s browning, just to give the meat more flavor… I look forward to trying some of your other recipes!
I had never had Korean Beef until meeting my boyfriend who lived in Korea for two years. Bulgogi was one of his favorites and I love to cook so I decided I needed to learn how to make it. I tried a recipe from scratch and two crockpot sauces before giving up. Neither of us were happy with the results and I was wasting expensive meat. It beat me and I had accepted this and settled for trips to the Korean Restaurant three hours away a couple times a year. I saw this recipe and nothing but positive comments so I tried it. When it was done cooking I asked him if it smelled like Korean Beef and he said, “No, sorry.” Then he tried it and loved it! I just found your slow cooker Korean Beef and since beef was on sale this week I decided to try it tomorrow. He’s disappointed because this one was so perfect but I told him the recipes came from the same place and I trusted you. Here’s to hoping he loves it just as much but if not, we’ll be using this one a lot! Thanks!
Loved it! Amazing!
This recipe is fabulous! It has quickly become a family favorite. I use ground turkey and have been swapping in garlic powder for the minced garlic to save a few more seconds. I love that such a simple and fast meal can be so delicious! Thank you for this wonderful recipe.
I made this for dinner it was off the chain very very good.
This was great! The husband went back for seconds and said he wanted the rest for his late night snack. I think the red pepper gave it a nice little kick. I personally think it was a bit salty due to the soy sauce so maybe I’d use a tad less or go with low sodium. Next time I’m going to throw a fried egg on top!! Mmmm.. Thanks for the recipe!
Has anyone tried freezing the cooked beef bowl? My family loves it, by the way – thanks!
Did you ever try freezing this? I was thinking it’d work as a freezer meal.
This looks so good. Going to make for dinner tonight. I only have minced ginger on hand, wondering if that would be good to use instead of ground?
Minced ginger would be fine to use. The ratio for fresh to dry spices is typically 3:1.
i wonder if i use ground turkey instead, would the flavor be weird or just as good lol ?
Yes, you can substitute ground turkey.
Delicious! I wanted to do something different with the ground beef and already had the rest of the ingridents on hand so I went for it. This came together in a snap which is always a plus but more importantly the flavor is amazing. A little spicy to go along with the sweet and the fresh crunch of the green onions makes for a tasty dinner. I glad I stumbled across this!
Made this meal the other nite it turned out great! My wife is first generation and she said it was amazing and asked me to make it again, I think that it being 20$ cheaper with ground beef was the kicker! My 3 year old loved it too def an easy goto in our house from now on!!
Thanks,
The Ireland’s
Made this for dinner tonight….AMAZING. It was quick and easy to prepare and very tasty! Thank you for sharing this wonderful recipe. This will be a regular favorite in our home for sure!
This was delicious. Thank you!!!
Making this tonight with ground turkey … seems so easy & so yummy….can’t wait!
please share! how was it with the ground turkey!?
Our family LOVED this dish and I had it on the table in no time. It is joining our rotation. I really like a lot of the flavors your blog provides, I haven’t had a single thing I didn’t love!
Super recipe – we love Korean food after living there for awhile but good recipes are hard to find. I switched from ground beef to a stir fry beef and since my husband and I love heat added extra crushed chili and several sliced Thai peppers. The sauce is great and we really enjoyed the sweet and spicy contrast. Will definitely make this again. Thanks for a great recipe.
I like to try new recipes, but I always seem to end up with new chicken dishes. I was so pleased to find this new ground beef recipe. I made it last night with a little apprehension as to whether my family would like it, but it received unanimous thumbs up. The sauce is a great combination of sweet and spicy. Low sodium soy sauce may be a good option for some people, but we loved it as written. The sesame oil is a must and adds a wonderful flavor to the sauce. Thanks for the awesome, easy recipe!
My family loves this! I make it about once a week. The sauce is incredible tasting! I’ve done it with ground beef, ground turkey, ground chicken, even meatballs for a party. Last time I made it I diced chicken breast into small pieces and it was fantastic. Tonight I’m dicing pork sirloin into small cubes. Can’t wait! Thank you for this recipe!
I discovered this recipe a few months and make it once a week now!! It’s super delicious and so fast and easy. I literally crave it every few days. 🙂 Thanks for the great recipe.
Made this tonight. It is so yummy. I used ground pork instead of the beef. Turned out great! Thank you!
Have made this once and am totally in love with it! I added spinach and next time I am thinking of peppers as well because I am really into loading my food with veggies! The flavour was just so excellent! Thanks!
Going to try tripling for about 20 people? I will be putting it in little lettuce wraps as an appetizer. Hope it works!?
Keribear – how did this come out when tripled? I’m thinking of doing this for a group as well.
Yum! Made this and added a red pepper to it, it was delicious! I’m planning on adding more veggies next time. My boyfriend loved it to! Thank you!
Hey there – this was floating around my FB newsfeed last week, and it sounded tasty. (I’m Korean, but being adopted, I’ve never really been exposed to Korean food – I’ve never had actual bulgogi.) Tried it tonight and really liked it! I even bought sesame seeds to go in it like it shows in the photo, but then I followed the recipe and forgot to put them in. Ah well… I’ll sprinkle them in the leftovers. Thanks again for an easy, yummy, and new-to-me dish. 🙂
Me too! Adopted and not very familiar with korean food. I loved this dish!
I made the beef bowl a couple of weeks ago (so glad Buzzfeed featured it!) and with the addition of extra soy sauce to our taste, it was, as advertised, Damn Delicious. We both liked it so much that I copied the sauce recipe (double the soy) to use as my standard beef stir fry sauce. I’ve been searching for one that didn’t require me to use everything in my pantry, but still delivered great clean flavors. This is it. I briefly marinate sliced beef in a little of the sauce, and use the rest (with cornstarch) to finish the stir fry. So quick and easy, yet so very good!
Saw this on my favorite bloggers site “Hot Mess Mom,” I had already planned on making it, March made in heaven
I have had beef bulgogi many times from H Mart; the flavor in this recipe are spot on!!
Just made this, it really is easy, quick, and just so delish! Thanks for sharing the recipe! 🙂
Made a veggie version of this (with soy crumbles) tonight…was delish and so quick and easy. I think it’ll become a regular part of our rotation, esp. as we love Korean flavors. Thanks for the recipe!
This was great! Sooooo simple, and tasted great! What a great find, thank you!
I love Korean food and tend to always make bulgogi so I’m glad I came across this post to try out something new.
I cooked this for dinner tonight and both husband and I love it! I modified the ingredients based on what we already had at home – used paprika instead of red pepper flakes and I could only find minced beef at my local grocer in London. Adding it on to my meal rotation – so quick and easy! Thank you (and BuzzFeed for sending me here)!
This was fantastic! Thank you for another perfect recipe. I doubled it for my family of 6 and served with sushi rice and a side of stir fry veggies and it was a wonderful, quick meal.
Ita just like korean bulgogi but with gound beef instead of sliced beef
Made this last night and it is DELICIOUS and so easy! Thanks for the recipe!
I used coconut oil instead of sesame oil cause I didn’t have any on hand. Was really good amazing combination of sweet and spicy, husband didn’t like it fully sweet but did like it, I will try sesame next time to see if the sweetness changes. Amazing and fast loved it!
Thanks so much for the recipe!!!My family absolutely loved it!!!We added carrots, almonds,& used organic coconut oil instead of sesame oil..Also topped it off with cilantro..mmmmmm mmmmmm mmmmm delicious!!Thanks again!!☺
Wow! This is good! The only thing I might change for next time is reduce the soy sauce and add a bit of water or use reduced sodium soy sauce. Served this with rice and a cabbage, carrot and yellow pepper simple stir fry. I was so very happy with this meal.
After cyber stalking this blog for the past week, I finally made it my purpose in life to make this dish tonight. Used 93 % lean ground beef, sriracha (thank you to the folks above who mentioned that substitution) instead of red pepper flakes, and cut back on the garlic to compensate for what’s already in the sriracha. I totally scorched the garlic before I added the ground beef but it didn’t seem to matter at all. The dish was delish!!! I will probably cut back on the sugar a bit and use olive oil to sauté the garlic (not sure how that will alter the taste but this time I used canola oil). I had to make rice using one of those boil in the bag brands this time but this recipe already has me looking at rice makers/steamers. Just wanted to give a much appreciated “thank you” to Miss Chungah and all of the posting peeps who contributed thoughts/comments. Keep them coming folks, this woman needs to learn how to cook more than a few dishes…
Delish and easy! This one’s a keeper!
I am not sure if someone has suggested this, But I eat rice with almost every meal and for this one i wanted to switch things up so I used vermicelli noodles and the different texture along with some mushrooms and snow peas softened up on top of the beef after it was cooked and the mixture was added was very good.
I was looking for a recipe using ground beef because I hadn’t had a chance to go to the grocery store. I made this for dinner and I didn’t have sesame oil so I used vegetable oil in it’s place. It was delicious! I used brown rice instead of white rice too. My boyfriend who doesn’t care for leftovers boxed it up for later. This us a real easy mean and a real winner!
Thanks for the recipe! Made it tonight with just a few changes. Cut the brown sugar to 1/4 cup, and used 1 tsp. of sambal oelek in place of the dried chili flakes. Next time, I’ll do 1 1/2 times the amount of sauce, and up the sambal just a touch. Really good stuff!
This was VERY good. Thanks!
I made a bit my own version of this yesterday.
Used some olive oil with 6 dried piri-pri peppers in it which I grinded to powder.
Mixed a good amount of sriracha sauce with the ground beef.
All the rest (soy sauce, garlic and such) I mixed a bowl, then added some more sriracha and water till I had 0.5l.
First heated the olive oil with the piri-piri and baked a fair amount of union in it, then added the ground beef while the rice was cooking.
When the beef was ready I added the mixed sauce/rice into the pan and then let it simmer till the rice took in all the juice.
It was so delicious, sweet with a good hot aftertaste
Bingo dinner tonight! You’re a genius and a cutie patootie. Just had a granddaughter whose mom is asian and my son scottish-french. Now I have the cutest granddaughter on 2 continents!
This is soooooooooo delicious. I just made it and its perfect! Thank you!
I can not wait to try to make this tonight! I spent a few years always having dinner with a Korean family that my dad was friends with so I always have a soft spot for nori, squid and all things korean barbeque and I’m always on the hunt for some new recipes to add to my index, so happy this is different but still sounds amazing and traditional! You are one of my new favorite food bloggers!
This was very good & quick. I love bulgogi. I doubled the recipe. The only thing I would do differently next time is cut back on the sugar a bit. It was a little too sweet for me. Thanks!
I pinned this recipe a while ago thinking my husband would like it. I made it this evening and boy was I right. He loved it. I LOVE simple recipes that are delicious as well and this fits the bill. I paired it with Jasmine rice cooked in coconut milk and it was so good. Thanks for the recipe.
I’ve tried your recipe about 5 or 6 times since I’ve pinned it. It was a hit. My teenage daughter always requests this recipe at least once a week. It was so easy to make and very easy to follow recipe. Thanks for sharing this AMAZING recipe. Keep it coming…:)
I’m super late to this flavor party, but I had to comment and thank you for such an amazing recipe. I just whipped this up for a late supper for me and the BF, and OMG. I’m feeling a little territorial over the leftovers. As in, they’re ALL MINE. (I squirted a bunch of sriracha into the sauce, too, because sriracha belongs in everything.) This was just knock-your-socks-off fantastic!
Wow! Made this last week. It was super quick and easy to make and so flavorful!
This was one of the most amazing things I’ve ever eaten, let alone made! And so quick and easy! I doubled the meat and tripled the sauce (though, cut down on the sugar). I added in broccoli and shredded carrots. Topped with sesame seeds and green onions and served over jasmin rice. My (very hard to please) 5 year old son, rated this 500%! This will definitely be a regular! Thank you!!
I recently came across this recipe and decided to give it a try. I made it with ground pork as that is what I had in the freezer. My husband and 4 year old daughter loved it! She asked me to make it again the next night. Thanks for sharing!!
This dish was so yummy and EASY!! Hubby and I both loved it. Next time…I double the recipe!
This looks delicious! Do you think I might be able to do honey or maple syrup in place of the brown sugar? If so, would I use the same measurement? Thanks!:)
You can certainly substitute honey or maple syrup but I cannot speak for how much this will change the overall taste/texture of the dish as further recipe testing is needed. It is always best to use the ingredients listed in the recipe to obtain the best results possible.
This was so yummy
I doubled up on the sauce part of it to have it be a little “saucier” over the rice and I added some veggies. Made a delicious rice bowl, thanks for the recipe!
Would this recipe work with ground pork instead of beef? Do you think anything would need to be adjusted? It looks amazing!
Ground pork should work just fine.
I’ve been meaning to review this recipe for a while, but when I made it again today I knew I had to leave you a review! This recipe is AMAZING! My husband and I have both been dieting and losing weight this summer (just over 30 lbs each now!) and this is a great dish to modify and eat as lettuce wraps! I cut the sugar down, use ground turkey, and add celery, onions, mushrooms, water chestnuts, whatever sounds good!! This is a big hit with both of us, and I love that it can be so easily modified for spice as well. Thank you!
I live in Korea and love dishes like this.
I made it tonight using your recipe and it was really really tasty! Plus it was so quick and easy to make. Perfect for after work.
Thanks a lot!
I was looking for new recipes when I ran across your site, and I’m so glad I did! I made this but with sliced beef and marinated it in the sauce overnight (because my weirdo husband doesn’t like ground beef) and my family loves it! I’ve doubled the recipe and it still isn’t enough, so I’m tripling it this time. The flavors are just phenomenal, and it’s pretty healthy too. I serve it with rice and broccoli. Thank you for a new weekly classic!
What are the equivalent measurement in tablespoon?
I am confused with your question, Lee. Measurements are already in cups, tablespoons and teaspoons.
from uk and use to using grams/tablespoon measurement rather then cup measuremnt
Lee, there are many free online resources that can help convert your measurements to using grams. Here is one that you can use: http://calculator-converter.com/converter_g_to_tbsp_grams_to_tablespoons_calculator.php.
I tried this recipe last night and it was delicious it was the best bulgogi I have tried and its so simple to make! thank you so much for this recipe! x
I don’t know if I’ve already left a comment, but we sure do love this recipe! With a full-time job, two university courses, four kids, a hungry husband, and a schedule that has us all going in six different directions, it’s difficult to find something that’s fast AND healthy AND filling. This recipe fits the bill. Tonight I threw in chopped zucchini, onion, and red pepper and everyone gobbled it up. Thanks for making this busy mom’s life a little easier.
Do you think that I could mix the sauce with the uncooked burger and then freeze? I’d love to be able to make up a bunch at once and be able to pull down to thaw and make!
Lisa, it’s best to freeze after crumbling the ground beef. That way, all the flavors are soaked up within the meat, rather than a slab of uncooked ground beef.
This recipe was so good! I feel like I can’t make it that often, because I love it so much I eat myself sick every time I make it! This is spicy, sweet, and delicious! Thank you for a quick and amazing meal!

Amazing love this recipe
Just made it tonight and it was soooo good! Will definitely be in the regular rotation and it’s awesome to have on hand for a quick meal on those crazy nights. Thanks for such a great recipe!
This was SO YUMMY!!!!! I’m not a big beef fan but I LOVED this. My husband was stationed in Korea in the Airforce & we’re always looking for a great Korean inspired dish. I was wondering, I see sesame seeds in the picture, did you omit them from the recipe?
Yes, they are sesame seeds but only used as a garnish/photographic purposes.
I have never commented on anything, but I do want to say that this was delicious, easy and a keeper. I cook a lot, but this is easy for me to throw together when I’m not sure what to make or have my teenagers put together on my work days. I used turkey meat and was very tasty and added cooked broccoli to my leftovers for work. Good job.
Making this now because it’s easy ingredients. I’m substituting Braggs Liquid Aminos for soy sauce because it’s significantly lower in sodium. Smells great!

I just made this tonight. I’m pregnant and at the end of my first trimester- so basically throwing up most of what i eat (unless it’s carbs, meat or cheese) and exhausted. This was delicious!!! I had it over a big bowl of rice and will be making it again soon. 🙂 thanks for the new easy recipe I can actually eat.
I made this last night at the very last minute. Can you say screaming? I had it for lunch today as well. I’m so glad I found your site!!! Keep up the awesome work!!!
Tasted fantastic!! Even better the second time around when we improvised with ground turkey!!! Was just a little bit sweeter and we prefer that version now!! It’s a favorite!
Amazing! Kids love it and it’s super quick. Last time I made it I did add mushrooms, a can of baby corn and bean sprouts. It was delicious.
Just finished eating this….it was amazing! My husband gave it 5 stars. We used Romaine lettuce for wraps. I will be making it again…soon.
Since I don’t usually have any Korean pear hanging around, I added some apple juice to the sauce. The extra flavor lends itself to pushing this even closer to bulgogi. We also let the meat and sauce reduce down a bit and eat wrapped in lettuce from the garden and bap. Served with some kkaennip-kimchi makes for a meal even my Korean mother-in-law would eat.
Thanks for the great recipe. We just made it for dinner and everyone loved it. I used to make something similar, but your recipe turned out much better! The main difference is that I used to marinade everything for about 15 minutes instead of saving the soy sauce mixture for the end).
YUM! Tried this tonight as I needed a REALLY quick dinner – used ground turkey and brown rice but those were the only subs. I always use LS soy sauce, so ours wasn’t too salty at all. VERY quick, easy, tasty and if my husband doesn’t get home from work in the next 5-10 minutes, there may not be any left! 😉 Great recipe, thanks for sharing it

My boyfriend and I regularly eat at a Korean restuarant here in St.Louis, bogogui is by far our favorite dish! We made this tonight and I’m sure our trips to the restuarant will be less frequent! It was delicious and I’m so excited I found your blog.
Thank you Thank you Thank you!!! I had been looking for something new for a while, and my husband and I love Asian flavors, and this was exactly the right thing! We love it sooo much, we have been eating it at least twice a month! YUM!
I really did want to love it, and after some changes it was alright. Did no one find it to be extremely salty? Maybe next time i’ll opt for my low sodium soy sauce, or cut it down some.
You can always reduce the amount of soy sauce to taste. Also, you should know that this is generally meant to be eaten with rice to balance out the favors. Hope that helps!
Yes, I made white rice to go along with it. I gave it another go at it this weekend, and adjusted the soy sauce to my preference. It was great
I cut the soy sauce in half and used rice vinegar to do the cutting. I also did’t use any sugar. You can argue that I’m not making something “authentic” but that is the beauty of being the cook. We do what we want. PS I lived two years in Korea, so I have had plenty of authentic bulgogi.
and this is an awesome recipe. thank you.
This was soooo damn delicious! Hubby and I LOVED it! I have tried a few of your recipes already and they are all so amazingly good and simple to follow. Love your site!
I made this tonight and we all loved it!! Thank you!
Our family LOVED this recipe. My husband is Korean and he gobbled it up. Thanks for the great recipe.
I have made this as well. It is awesome. I have used the sauce on chicken, pork and steak strips. Works great. This is a staple in my house now.
A friend shared this recipe and suggested adding a tablespoon of natural peanut butter for a pad thai taste. Delicious!
love this recipe, family loves this recipe, easy to make anymore easy recipes you would like to share?
I tried this recipe over the weekend since I had some ground beef in the fridge. It turned out DELICIOUS!!! My 21 month old son devoured a bowl of it and my husband approved that it’s a “keeper”. I added cubed soft tofu and cilantro at the end, it was great. It was like a “Korean Mapo Tofu”. I put kimchi in my bowl too, yum! Thanks for the great recipe! I’ll definitely make it again.
Made this over the weekend. Both my husband (who spent 2 years in Korea in the Army) and I loved it. My 3-year-old liked it pretty well, but shied away from the spiciness. I think next time, and until he’s a bit older, I’ll dial the red pepper flakes back to 1/4 tsp or so. Once his tastes have matured, we can come back to the 1/2 tsp.
It was probably the ginger that was too spicy. Red pepper flakes do add flavour but not heat.
I forgot to add that I love eating this wilh a little raw cole slaw mix mixed in. It is great!
This recipe is THE BEST…….I mean THE BEST!!!!!! We have it about once a week and everyone loves it….even the pickiest eater loves it.
This dish was absolutely delicious. I used ground turkey instead of beef and Sriracha instead of chili flakes. Thank you for this wonderful recipe, I will definitely be making this again!!!
This recipe was quick, cheap, and delicious!! The holy trinity for a poor college student:}
It’s the holy trinity for busy families too – we make this at least once a week!
Made this again last night as written though I swapped ground chicken breast for the beef. I also roasted cauliflower in my cast iron pan and topped it with the meat. I very nearly ate the whole thing – it was sooo good. And maybe a little healthy? this recipe is becoming a goto, for sure!
This is comfort food at its best! I made it even simpler by replacing the soy sauce, sugar and ginger with Yoshida’s Gourmet Sauce (my go-to sauce for everything from cooking chicken to marinating beef jerky). I’m a garlic fiend so I left that in. I also like the suggestions by others about adding assorted veggies to make it a one pan meal. Thanks for posting this recipe… I’m so glad I found your blog!
Tried this recipe tonight and wanted to add some veggies to it round it out. I tripled the sauce and added shredded cabbage, broccoli slaw, carrots, mushrooms and a frozen veggie mix. My husband loved it! I didn’t take into account that the veggies would make it a little sweeter than usual. Overall it was good! It was the first meal that I have made in 2 weeks that my husband has enjoyed, so I thank you!
I absolutely love your recipes. And this? Oh my delicious! Just made this for dinner, and I don’t think I have ever been so excited for left overs. Not that I left much…
I made this last night and it was fantastic. I did a quick pickling (sugar and vinegar) of shallots, cucumbers and red cabbage which I let sit while I cooked the rice and the ground turkey. We topped the bowl with shredded carrots, the pickled vegetables, this fantastic recipe and a soft fried egg. We drizzled sriracha over the entire bowl and LOVED EVERY BITE. Thanks so much for the great recipe, Chung-Ah!
Delicious! My husband and I love Asian food and recently moved to an area that is sorely lacking in any Asian restaurants! So sad! But, I now will be making things like this delicious Korean Beef Bowl to help satisfy our cravings! Thank you for the recipe.
This was delicious, thank you!
Just whipped this up. AND IT WAS AMAZING! I was inspired by the comment above to add broccoli, which I roasted with peanuts in my cast iron skillet while frying this up. SO GOOD! I used a pretty unhealthy but flavorful ground beef – 85/15 but I had bought it on a great sale – it was the Dakota grass fed organic – which I NEVER buy but I think my market was trying to make it move. Needed a good recipe for it and found you. Next time I’ll try it with ground turkey – and i could definitely see this inside a lettuce leaf! THANK YOU! Just discovered your Damn Delicious blog and you ain’t kiddin!
I’m so glad you had a chance to make this. I actually just made this tonight too – we have this at least once a week!
I made this last night and couldnt believe how good it was. I was out of sesame oil so i subsituted with sesame tahini and didn’t notice a different. It is my new go-to comfort food.
Just made this tonight and WOW, it was so good and a perfect match to my bulgogi craving! The only change I made was using Bragg’s Liquid Aminos instead of soy. I was able to pull it together, and make burnt chili garlic cauliflower in under 40 min. I will definitely be making this again, thanks!
Thus was amazingly yummy. I feed 5 boys plus my husband and I at least 6 nights a week. This was quick, different and fairly cheap. Also the cat liked it too (we have a cat who eats some of the meat portion of our dinner everynight).
I’m so glad! Quick and easy is a must, especially when you have 6 boys and a cat to feed!
Fabulous!! My kids devoured this! Served with a side of Japanese cucumber salad
I just made this (with the addition of sliced orange pepper) and my daughter loved it!
Amazing! Was looking for something quick and easy and found your blog on Pinterest. We love Korean food and it gives us a break from our daily Chinese food that we cook. The husband was skeptical and thought it would be too salty when he saw the soy, but ended up loving it. I used the red pepper paste I had on hand from the Korean grocery instead of the flakes. It was great. This will be a staple in our house from now on! Thank you for an awesome recipe!
Thanks for this recipe! I found it today on Pinterest, realized that I had all the ingredients and made it for dinner. It was as quick and easy as you said it would be. Note: My little boy likes the bulgogi sauce a LOT. So, I doubled the sauce and it was perfection. 😉 Thanks again!
This dish is a keeper. Easy and exactly what I have been looking for in flavors. I added some shredded carrot for color and topped the serving with fresh cilantro. Delicious.
I made this last night for dinner and you’re right! It is damn delicious! And so easy and quick. I made my rice in a pressure cooker so this dinner took all of about 15 minutes to make! I will certainly be making this often! Hmmmm…. now I’m wondering if I can make a big batches of this and portion it out into freezer meals!
I would love to turn this into a freezer meal too! If I ever try it out, I’ll let you know how it turns out!
Made this last night and it turned out fantastic! I am making again tonight, but a double batch so that there is lots for leftovers! I added some steamed broccoli on the side and it was perfect!
Delicious! It will be in the regular rotation from here on out! I used sriracha as Jocelynne did. I think the sauce will be my go to for all kinds of things – from chicken to meatballs. Thanks for the great recipe!
Fast, flavorful, and fantastic!! Added some crushed peanuts and a squirt of lime, so good!
SOOOO DELICIOUS! I used Sriracha instead of the red pepper flakes since I didn’t have any on hand. I will definitely be making this again!
WHY WAS THIS SO GOOD, I am actually upset that I never found this before… gotta love google Superb recipe. Instagram loves you also.
Tbh, I went into this thinking it probably wouldn’t be very good becuase of how little effort is needed. After I tried it though, I was genuinely shocked! For something so simple and easy, it’s really yummy. I definitely wouldn’t mind making this again. xD
Sometimes simple is best! So glad you had a chance to try it out!
Nice recipe. Thanks so much.
Thank you for the recipe. Liked it a lot. I serve it with salad topped with coleslaw dressing, which I find is typical in Korean restaurants.
This was amazing! My picky baby ate it all and my oldest asked to eat it every day. It’s a dream come true for a busy mom.
I’m so glad the kids liked it! This beef bowl is definitely one of our favorite dishes!
This looks beautiful and delicious! Wanted to let you know that I’m putting this in a beef recipe round-up. I’ll be linking back to your site and only including a picture in collage format so that neither your photo nor your recipe can be “swiped” from my site. If anyone wants to see details, they have to come visit you! Please do let me know if you don’t want a mention and link shared for any reason. I hope the round-up brings you lots of traffic!
Just made this for me and my fiance. I added some roasted broccoli. It was amazing! We wanted to make it again immediately. SO GOOD!
I made this for dinner for me and my husband and we really enjoyed it. So easy to make and fast. I plan to make it again soon since the hubby requested it. Thanks for sharing the recipe 🙂
I’m so glad you both enjoyed it! This dish is a staple at our house and we make it at least three times a month!
Just made this for dinner tonight. There was just the right amount of spice and sweet to the dish. I doubt there will be any leftovers.
Making this for the second time this month.. We love it!
Pingback: Quick Dinner: Korean Beef Bowl
So easy…. My son “Mmmm” until he was done with it… Made the perfect lunch.. Thanks 🙂
I am literally making this every single week and we fight over who gets the leftovers… It is that good! I also add lots of veggies and the flavour is still amazing. Most of the time I do it with ground chicken… In case someone doesn’t have beef on hand, other ground meat works well too. Thanks for a great recipe!
What kind of veggies to you add? snap peas? broccoli? corn? green beans? spinach?
I added broccoli and my kids slurped it up it was sooo delicious!!!
broccoli, shredded carrot sometimes frozen corn!
I add snap peas and have added broccoli as well however, snap peas taste the best. Just don’t add them too soon. I wait until the last minute or two of cooking so they are still a little crispy, it’s a great way to sneak in your veggies!
I have made several times a thai version of ground beef. I was so excited to see this. Had made “real” stuff once, after having a hard time with the quality of meat when I ate at Korean Restaurants. This was a fun recipe to use up some hamburger. Had it with my parents end of year ” tomatoes of joy,” one of their zucchini’s all sautéed up, and brown rice. With much hot sauce’s passed at the table, a good time was had by all. Thanks for posting all your wonderful recipes. What a beautiful site.
I’ve been looking for simple meals made with ingredients that wouldn’t require my (older) parents to do much specialty shopping. This might make the list.
Question – Is that toasted sesame oil or regular that you use?
I used toasted sesame oil. Hope that helps!
Can not wait to make this for dinner over the weekend! Italian/Irish but LOVE the Asian flavors especially Korean!
Let me know how it turns out!
This is FANTASTIC!!!!
This was amazing! I doubled the recipe for four people and we hardly had one serving left! This is now in our regular meal rotation. It is so easy to make and it taste soooooo good. We also put the mixture of rice and meat in butter leaf lettuce leaves and ate it like Korean BBQ. Highly recommend this!!!!!!
Hey there. Can I substitute powdered ginger?
Yes, absolutely.
Why? Fresh ginger has a completely different flavor than ground or powedered. If you ever use freshly grated ginger, you’ll never, ever go back.
I’ve been looking for a different meal idea so I can use up my ground beef. This looks perfect! Thanks.
Made it, ate it, LOVED IT!!!! This was quick, easy, and delish! Thanx for sharing 🙂
what can you use besides SUGAR……?????? trying to get off it. Plus the worst mix with meat – just sticks to those arteries…..
Unfortunately, without further recipe testing, I cannot answer with certainty. As always, please use your best judgment regarding substitutions and modifications.
If you’re using a sweeter soy sauce like kikoman’ that helps. Also don’t be afraid to add onions, when they carmelise their natural sugars fill the gap. I reduced the amount of brown sugar by half and it’s still quite delicious, better even.
I’ve done this successfully using maple syrup in place of the sugar – it’s delicious both ways but nutritionally superior 🙂
Sugar is sugar. Syrups, honeys, etc all equal sugar. On the g factor it’s the same. Unfortunately the only way to reduce sugar intake, is to eliminate some.
Try a grated Asian pear. That’s what my Korean aunties use for their bulgogi marinades instead of sugar
I use honey and it’s great!
Did you use the same amount of honey as the sugar?
Stevia to taste works well with Soy sauce recipes as the aftertaste is covered by the strong soy flavor
not only did you not use sugar, you used fake sugar…is that amount of sugar in this recipe really going to make a difference unless you’re diabetic or 400 pounds!
Molly – while I don’t care for the taste of stevia, your comment regarding it is uneducated. Stevia is not fake sugar. It is a natural sweetener and much, much less than sugar is required to sweeten a dish.
Now, if you want to trash talk true fake sugars, I’ll be in line right behind you!
Stevia sweeteners contain very little of the beneficial components the leaf actually has. Most are mainly made up of erythritol. The plant and the sweeteners are very different. Just use sugar.
Sugar free apple sauce:)
I eliminate the sugar altogether. It’s very tasty. I also add cilantro and a squeeze of lime at the end for a little brightness and freshness.
I’ve made this a few times without any sugar at all and it’s still quite tasty.
