Homemade Peanut Butter Dog Treats

The easiest homemade dog treats ever – simply mix, roll and cut. Easy peasy, and so much healthier than store-bought!
I know. Dog treats on Damn Delicious? I never thought I’d see the day. But with this face, I just couldn’t resist.
No, but really, I’ve been spending a lot of time and money shopping for good-quality dog treats for Butters here, but then I thought, why not just make them at home?
Nothing beats the homemade version and I know exactly what’s going into his food instead of all those suspicious by-products.
Best of all, these homemade treats are incredibly easy with ingredients you already have on hand – peanut butter, some leftover pumpkin puree from the holidays, eggs and whole wheat flour.
And bone-shaped cookie cutters are just so much fun to work with. I used these and made several different sizes, although I certainly favored the smallest ones. They are just too cute.
But you can really use any kind of cookie cutter you want – hearts, stars, dog houses, paws, etc. It’s up to you! Just be sure to adjust baking time as needed – the longer they bake, the crunchier they are so it’s really up to your pups’ preferences.
And believe me when I tell you that your pup is going to LOVE these so much!
Please consult with your pet’s veterinarian regarding possible allergies your dog may have.
Homemade Peanut Butter Dog Treats
Ingredients
- ⅔ cup pumpkin puree
- ¼ cup peanut butter*
- 2 large eggs
- 2 ½ cups whole wheat flour
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat; set aside.
- In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat pumpkin puree, peanut butter and eggs on medium-high until well combined, about 1-2 minutes.
- Gradually add 2 1/2 cups flour at low speed, beating just until incorporated. Add an additional 1/4 cup flour at a time just until the dough is no longer sticky.
- Working on a lightly floured surface, knead the dough 3-4 times until it comes together. Using a rolling pin, roll the dough to 1/4-inch thickness. Using cookie cutters, cut out desired shapes and place onto the prepared baking sheet.
- Place into oven and bake until the edges are golden brown, about 20-25 minutes.*
- Let cool completely.

Just shy of the wheat flour. Can I substitute a little over half a cup all purpose flour? Thanks!
Hello.
I did not make it but I would like to.
Can you use an electric hand mixer instead?
Do they need to be refrigerated when done? Or shelf safe?
Would love to learn more
I’d like to make tiny treats to use for training rewards. Do you think piping these out in small pearls would work?
Thanks for helping so many take good care of furry friends!
For training treats, I use a rolling pin to shape dough into a large flat sheet. Place dough on a cookie sheet then use a pizza cutter to make small squares. I make a double batch, refrigerate a small amount and freeze the rest.
I have made this recipe continuously for my Golden Retriever since my neighbor shared it with me. Parker loves it! I will shoot a video for his IG page – Parker_DCGoldenRetriever_to show his excitement.
my mini goldendoodle LOVED these!! I love how easy they are to make, plus I know exactly what is in her dog treats now. Will be repeating this recipe many times to come!!
These cookies are my way of meeting my neighbors that have dogs. The dogs PULL their owners into my driveway for the Cookies. These cookies are very easy to make and I freeze them, found that in the summer with the heat, they are all natural and go bad.
Did not make it but don’t see anywhere in this article or recipe about the one ingredient in store bought peanut butter that is hands down a killer for dogs. Xylitol is a sugar substitute found in peanut butter that is harmful. Not all peanut butters have xylitol so always check the label. Hint – Great Value brand does NOT contain xylitol.
I was wondering approximately how many this recipe makes as I am trying to figure out how much to charge for them at my sisters new business
About 80, I roll mine about 1/4 inch thick, makes them chewy like a Chocolate Chip cookie!
Do you know how long these are good for?
I place mine in the freezer. In the summer the cookies get fuzzy in a few days after baked. In the freezer, there good till there gone and that’s not long.
This was my first bake recipe for my dog “Dona”. She loves them! And it was very very easy to prepare and bake.
Thank you Chunga, I just love these treats, not personally, not enough salt or sugar for my taste.
All of my friends with dogs and my own 2 just adore these, they will all be getting some for Christmas.
Just a reminder, since there are no preservatives, keep the majority in the freezer and take a few out and keep them in the fridge until you need them.
Awesome recipe! The second one I did with Oat and whole wheat flour and Applesauce instead of pumpkin. They loved both. Thank you so much.
I have read the article and it has convinced me that these are just about perfect! It looks great but can I substitute anything for the pumpkin purée? It messes with my oldest pups stomach. Thank you!
These are so great. Easy to do, come out beautifully, and doggo is begging for them every time!
I was wondering how long these last fresh for making one batch?
I have not actually made these yet. But I am certain from reading the article that they will be perfect.
We have several dogs in the family. One has dietary issues. The ingredients will fit her diet.
I did order the cutters from Amazon.Ca.
I think the biscuits are a wonderful addition to the treat basket. Love the idea. Only one problem for me – my dogs won’t eat them! I even ‘iced’ them with Reese’s peanut butter pieces.
I will bake them again but the next time I’ll put some food processor chopped bacon through them. That could work!
Love the recipe almost as much as my dogs . But I think we are doing something wrong. Some of our cookies develop air pockets…sometimes big air pockets.
Anyone have a suggestion or solution?
My name is Fenton Baade and I really enjoyed making you healthy yummy dog treats and I would like to ask you can I use oat flour or whole meal flour? Can you send me a message
Fenton
Just my 2 cents …
Baking is all about experimentation for me.
Some of the best recipes come from this.
Try a small batch to see what happens.
Did you get a reply? If not, I can tell you I use fine oatmeal (porridge oats blended fine) and they come out just fine. 🙂
I made these for our English Mastiff today. She absolutely loves them! I love the fact that if you buy all new ingredients, you have so much left over to make many more batches. We added a peanut butter and honey icing to the top for a little extra flavor. We gave out EM 2, and she has been stalking us in the kitchen while we finish! Ha ha. Thanks for this recipe.
My name is Fenton baade
Can I ask you a question you can use out flour too
They were great my dog loved them so much I had to make 3 batches
My dog loved them!
My daughter makes these for our dogs all the time and they love them! Our oven has been broken for a few months now and they are missing their treats. Can you use this recipe in the air fryer? If so, what would you recommend for temp and time?
what kind of peanut butter you use.. i know there is a certain ingredient you cant use in peanut butter
Any peanut butter that does NOT include xylitol as an ingredient is safe. Examples of good peanut butter brands to use include JIF or Peter Pan. Most generic store bought brands are safe too, just check the ingredient list!
Yes, Xylitol is not good for dogs.
We use Kraft. It’s also good.
It pays to check ingredients … even for your own consumption.
If there’s a content with a name you cannot pronounce, google it.
My three chihuahua’s love these cookies and I know what the ingredients are!!
One of my dogs has stomach issues and she doesn’t get sick anymore!!
Thanks for the recipe ❤️
The absolute best recipe for dog treats, it’s my go-to and all dogs love them!
I have made these quite a few times. I use a pizza cutter to cut them into small squares for training treats. My dogs love them! I always double the recipe and freeze them so they don’t get moldy. They only last about a week otherwise.
3 dogs loved these biscuits. I also added a carrot to sweeten them up… they smelt great but tasted pretty bland to me – but the three dogs loved them – Maltese, Jack Russell, and shar pei x husky.
Great recipe! I have seen people mention adding pumpkin pie spice but this is a no-no since most contain nutmeg which is poisonous to dogs.
hi ! i want to make about 250 of these in the tiniest dog bone shape in the photo with the 3 different sizes, how many batches of these would i have to make ?
I make these and rather than bake them all the way, I take them out and put them in the dehydrator for a few hours. They turn out perfect and last weeks. Thanks for this recipe.
I love these my kids and dogs loves these!! thank you!!
I used oat flour instead, my first time making dog treats, is the dough like playdoh texture? I baked my first batch using cookie scooper they didn’t drop down into form like regular cookies is that normal? Not sure if I did it right. My dog ate one but will try again rolling it and using cutters.
Your result is normal because these are roll out type cookies, not drop cookies
I just made these for (2) rather fussy Labradors, and they LOVE them. Thanks for sharing the recipe!!
I tried several recipes that were total flops until I found this one. These came out beautifully. I didn’t frost them, just sprinkled a tiny bit of pumpkin pie spice on top and the dogs absolutely LOVE them, even my super picky really old Maltese. I used oat flour for the mix, as it’s more moist and has more flavor and texture than rice flour and used canned sweet potato. I used the drier, more uniform rice flour for the rolling out part and it worked great for that. I did note a very helpful comment from someone else re keeping them from molding so quickly: once cooked to golden brown I turned the oven down to 150 for about 20 more minutes, then turned the oven off and left the cookies in there until the oven cooled down completely. They were a bit harder but you could tell they had less moisture left in them to promote mold. But even then, they break fairly easily and my almost toothless 17 year old could still easily eat them.
A totally great recipe and one I’ll be using in various forms for a long time, thanks so much. 😀
Our dog loved these treats! I substituted oat flour (processed oat fashioned oatmeal) for the flour, and it worked great. Our treats looked a little less glamorous, and a bit more wholesome because of the change of flours.
I love this recipe! My friend’s dog is really picky about his food so this is really helpful
Chase really love them. Would like to know how many calories are in it
First time making him they were really easy. We made small ones because our goldens on a diet. I would like to know how many calories is in the recipe. Thank you
Chase really love them
didn’t take long and everyone I gave them to for their dogs loved them! Will be making more for Christmas presents for some doggies! Thank you so much! was so easy to make <3
My 5 yo son gets to choose from a list of “homework” items weekly, and one of the choices is to complete a recipe and draw a picture of what you did. So this week we made these treats for our mini dachshund “Jello”. (We decided that since we always make yummy things for us, it would be nice to make something for him for a change.) My son excitedly dug out all his playdoh cookie cutters and tools and made all kinds of shapes for Jello- including hearts “because I love him!”. It was a wonderful activity and the dog went bonkers for them. In fact, I think sometimes he doesn’t actually have to go outside but does so only to receive one of these biscuits! Thanks so much for sharing this simple recipe- it made great treats and memories!
PS- we subbed sweet potato for lack of pumpkin and they turned out wonderfully!
PPS- I forgot one thing! We ran out of the ww flour and used a bit of rice flour to no ill effect. I feel like this recipe lends itself well to adaptation.
My dogs love this recipe. And it’s so easy to make. I ran out of pumpkin and used sweet potato. That worked really well.
I just made these tonight. My dogs loved them. The 2 1/2 cups of flour is just perfect. I also added about 2 Tbl of honey and about 1/2 tsp cinnamon. 20 min cooking time is just perfect with my oven. I will definitely make these again. I’m keeping a few in a small plastic bag and freezing the rest, since some people said they got moldy after sitting for about a week.
I find the longer you leave them in the Oven, the harder they are and they won’t go moldy. Once they’re cooked I turn the oven down to about 150C and leave them in there for a bit longer until they are very hard when you tap them (up to about 20mins extra). Then I turn oven off and leave them in there until the oven is cooled.
Thank you for this tip Sandra- I actually read your comment about doing this before making them for the first time and I think you’re on to something so I just did this step anyway. The treats are super hard and I don’t anticipate mold at all. Dropped a desiccant packet in the container for good measure!
Just finished these and all three puppies love them!
The dogs love them!
I have been making these for my doggies for over a year. So easy and they absolutely love them? I use ground up oatmeal for the flour and add a bit of cinnamon. When I don’t have pumpkin, I cook up sweet potatoes. Wonderful recipe!
Update to my last review: I have been using Bob’s Red Mill stone ground whole wheat flour which must be finer than regular whole wheat flour, because it now only takes about 1 1/2 cups. Not sure if it reduces calorie content but, they still love them.
Had no idea when I made these the first time that this would be the beginning of spoiling my dog for store bought treats. He will not even think of eating anything other than these. Spits the others right out. Moose says they are damn delicious!
Thank you for sharing your recipe for the dogs. My dogs love this cookie so much !
Simple to make, my Freakingese seems to like them. They are bland for a human but I guess that is the point! haha Thanks for the idea. She enjoyed them for her 9th. birthday.
Have made these a few times now. My old Boxer and young Mastiff pup both love them. Tried substituting pumpkin with sweet potato and have also added small pieces of meat which both also seemed to love. Thanks heaps for a great, easy recipe.
Easy to make, loved by the four-leggeds at the pawty we held… but BEWARE: they mold after only a couple days in a ziploc bag. Best to refrigerate.
After 8 days stored they are starting to get mould on them . Can i freeze them? They are cheap and dogs love them.
Put a piece of bread in jar with the treats it will absorb the moisture and they will last longer
My Pepe loved these! I’m so glad I found this easy recipe. No more store bought treats!!
Our 11 week old Bernedoodle absolutely loves them! I used smashed Bananas instead of pumpkin puree, it worked great. I love this recipe and so does our puppy
It’s pouring rain out and I’m babysitting my daughter’s pug who gets along famously with my pitbull. I decided to make your recipe. The dogs were asleep. As soon as the fragrance of the biscuits started to fill the room, they went nuts. Because I made 2 different sizes, I got around 80 treats out of the batch. To be honest, I’m tempted to try one myself. They love them! Christmas gifts for my friends with dogs .
My dog loves these..
I roll the batter into 3/4 to 1 inch diameter logs and bake. I slice them down and cool in the refrigerator. Put in freezer for a bit and then put pieces in snack bags. The snack bags in one big freezer bag. My Chihuahua likes them frozen. I did add a little honey and cinnamon. Thank you for your recipe.
My dog loves these! Thanks for sharing recipe! Btw, I substitute the pumpkin purée w sweet potatoes since I know my doggy is a fan. So y’all should give it a try!
Also I read comments on shelf like. My first batch got moldy after a week or 2 (don’t remember exactly) but after that I’ve been keeping extras in the fridge to last longer and sharing a few treats w another dog, too 🙂
I’ll definitely try freezing some per advice below
My beagle just licked the spoons and bowls clean. I’m not sure if he enjoyed them more baked or licking from the bowl and spoon. Super easy to make. He is demanding more then he needs. Harry the hound dog loves them. His first home baked goodies.
Question: I plan to make these as gifts. How do you store them, and how long will they keep?
My 12 week old pup loves these treats! I also added one banana to the batch as well! Had to bake an additional few minutes due to it!
My dogs LOVE these cookies in fact even my friends picky little puppy who wouldn’t eat anything the first few days enthusiastically stole this from my older dog
Highly recommend
I would also very much like to know storage instructions and shelf life!
I’m sure these will be a hit!
What is the shelf life of these? How do you store them?
Has anyone made them in silcone molds?
Looking forward to making them. Thanks for sharing!
amazing! my dog, ginny loved this! I have been making it every week for a treat! for sure recommend and will do it again! hope everyone listens to this advise because damn its good!(for the dog, she seems to love it) doing it right now! SUCCESS
Beware of xylitol used as a sweetener in some peanut butters and is harmful to dogs. Google the info.
Use natural peanut butter. Its just ground peanuts and oil.
Cant wait to try this recipe.
we sold them at a garage sale and everyone loved them! super easy to make
My pup loves them! She hung out while I was making them and clung to my heals til she could have one or two or three. Yes SUCCESS!
My little Lola is gluten free because it makes her skin itch less so I made these with King Arthur Gluten Free Flour. They came out beautifully. She’s 14 and is very fussy. We inherited her a few months ago from my best friend who passed away too soon.
Lola supervised the entire project and was loathe to see any waste with cutters, so we cut them with a pizza cutter after rolling and got every last bit for her. She LOVES them. We keep enough out for the week and take the rest from the freezer as needed.
They are perfect for our little baby.
oh my GOD!! my dog is absolutely obsessed w/ these, as pb and pumpkin are her favs anyways! what a wonderful idea to mix the two and make an even better treat! im sharing this recipe with everyone i know w/ a dog!! and my kitchen smells like a dunkin donuts in october lol!
I made these for my grandpuppy, OMG! He loves it more than his meal, he can’t get enough! I give some to my neighbor for her little finicky pop & she loves it.
Very simple & easy to do!
Rex loves these treats! So simple to make.
My dogs loved, loved, loved these! OMG! They kept wanting them! I’m so grateful to find this recipe! And they are too! Thank you!
I’m making them for my grandmas pup
I know my dog will love these because he loves peanut butter, and occasionally likes pumpkin puree by itself. Bu I don’t keep wheat flour of any kind since I have Celiac. What adjustments do I need to make if I use brown rice flour?
I was coming to ask the same thing. I’m going to try it with brown rice flour since I have some on hand. We shall see.
This recipe is great and so easy! Baked a batch for my daughter’s puppy when we went to meet her. She LOVES them. She hears the container being opened and waits for her treat! The recipe makes a good amount and they freeze well, too. Thanks for sharing 🙂
Super easy to make and my dog absolutely LOVED the biscuits!! She practically inhaled them!
Can’t wait to make these. Just wondering how long and how do you store these for?
Super easy recipe! I added whipped cottage cheese “frosting”. Fur baby, and fur nephew and niece Loved them!
Thank you so much! My pup loved them, her new fave!
My 5 year old Staffy is obsessed with these dog treats! A friend recommend them to me and I wasn’t sure because I’ve never baked anything before but they are SO easy to make and minimal ingredients so cheap! Thanks for sharing
my dog loves these cookies but they mold really quikly ny advice. they are also not flat on top and i really need them to be as i am trying to ice them
Is there something i can use instead of putting pumpkin puree?
I have been making these for years, great treat for the pups, they love them!
Two questions
1. Can I freeze the dough?
2. How long do the treats last in the refrigerator?
My doggo loved these! Thanks! Although, i stored them in a old (Washed) Pickle jar, and they grew mold FAST. Unfortunately i had to throw them out. SO good recipe but don’t store in jars!
I put in zip lock bags and told my family not to leave out forever then I gave them larger bag for freezer. Next batch I used Glad plastic container with snap shut lid. They put the bowl right in the freezer!
I had read ppl had trouble with mold but that’s bc store bought have preservatives.
Both me and my dog enjoyed these, very delicious!
How many treats does this recipe make?
My two fussy eaters love these biscuits. Thank you for sharing.
Hi, do you use canned pumpkin purée? Thank you in advance
This sounds great but, I was wondering if you need an electric mixer or if you can mix by hand? Because I really want to try this, it sounds excellent! I want to try it but I’m unsure if mixing by hand is okay?
Dear Melanie, YES, I mixed mine by hand & they’re still great!
Try icing the bottom side, as the top may not be flat. Our furrbabies give this recipe a paws up!
Instead of wheat flour I used almond flour and they turned out very good. My dog is a picky eater but she loves these.
Good dog treats but do not sub with almond flour!!! Almonds are toxic to dogs. Always check with a vet before making subs with ingredients!
Shae, almonds are not directly toxic to dogs, but they are not recommended due to the potential for health problems. From what I’ve read from several reputable sources, almond flour in baked goods is fine for dogs.
My grandpug Millie Moonbeam LOVES these! I make a double batch and freeze most of them in a heavy duty Ziploc bag. Works great!
My dog is looking for more! I am wondering how to store them
Thank you!
How long do they last?
Just made these tonight and my dog lost his mind. He loooooves them!!! Thank you for this simple, yummy recipe. This was my first time making dog treats–so glad I tried it!
Reallly fun to make for my family’s dogs. Hope they like them.
Our dogs love these! Super easy to make too!!!
My new rescue pup LOVES these treats! He seriously goes crazy for them. I love making them and they make a ton if I use the small Cookie cutter.
Baked a patch of these for some foster pups we have coming this weekend. My dog chowed down when I gave her one. I used a small mold, so it yielded over 100! Thank you!
Hi! im looking to make these tomorrow. is there any subsititue for the whole wheat flour? thanks!
My dog loves these treats! We make them for all the family dogs and they all enjoy the treats. They usually last 1 week to 1 1/2 weeks because they are natural. The only flour you can use for dogs is whole wheat because it’s good for them. Any other flour is not good for dogs. You can get 4 cute treat cutters on SHEIN for only $3. Which is a great price!
I just made them. I used whole wheat white. Hope that was okay.
You can probably also sub chickpea flour or lentil flour. Both of those are good for dogs.
This recipe is incredible! The treats are so easy to make and my dogs love them!
Thank you so much!
These are so easy and way better than anything from the store. My dog loves them! Just ordered bone shaped cookie cutters! Thank you for sharing!
This recipe worked super well and was quick too. I was able to make a batch for my dog’s birthday and needless to say, she loved them. I would recommend this recipe to my friends with dogs!
Absolute stunner! My cocker spaniel, who tends to be a very fussy eater, kept begging for more! Thank you!
Damn Delicious
This is a great recipe, easy to put together and my dog loved the treats! I made about 150, left them out to cool down and bagged them to send to friends for the holidays. A week later I am finding out that they are developing mold. Any recommendations to make them last longer? Perhaps I should be baking then for a longer period so they are drier? Maybe also keeping them in a cellophane bag instead of a ziplock? I am going to attempt again later this week.
Store any extra in a Ziploc in the freezer and pull a few out as needed. They don’t take long to thaw at all
I’ve made these many times and am finally commenting. They are absolutely great. Both my dogs love them. I use a pizza cutter on the dough and cut them into very small squares to use for training treats. I double the recipe and then freeze them after baking because, yes, they will get moldy. I then pull out a weeks worth at a time.
I made these for all the dogs that come to the coffee shop. Just sensational making more today
Hi, i think berne gonna love these treats! Thanks for sharing this recipe. The best thing is that, It’s a great treat for both of us!
Dogs loved them! Used Christmas cookie cutters and made the perfect Christmas cookies for the boys! (even our super picky boy loved them!!)
good
it was great I loved it
I made these and was wondering how long they kept out of the fridge
Pupperiffic!!! I added about a tablespoon of applesauce (unsweetened) to get the dough to come together. Fabulous recipe and my 11 YO daughter made it mostly herself. Thank you
My dog absolutely loved these!!! The only problem I had throughout making them is that they puffed up a lot in the oven. Any ideas to solve this?
That’s the point Caroline
Poke holes in them with a fork before baking to let the heat pass through them.
These are awesome, and Benji loves them, but I made a little switch; instead of the eggs, I substitute applesauce, which adds a little sweetness, and he can’t get enough of them!
Made these for the first time today and my dog loves them! We also made them to give to friends’ and neighbors’ dogs for Christmas. Hope they love them just as much!
I cut these into 1″ rounds for my puppy and bake them for ~40 minutes (flipping halfway) to ensure they are extra crunchy. My pup goes crazy for these treats and I’ve made them twice now.
We had so much fun making these treats. As they were in the oven, our dog walked over to the oven sniffing! After they cooled down, we gave them to River and she loved them! We even tried the store bought treats vs this recipe and she went straight to these dog treats. Thank you for a wonderful recipe.
Can I eat these cuz they look hella good. My dog loves these treats and they are for sure much healthier than store bought treats.
Hi! Yes, you may eat them!
Hi! I made these last year for my dog and a made a few dog friendly Christmas “cookie” bags for friends and dog walking clients. They all loved them! I’m planning on making them again this weekend but I’m curious if I could substitute whole rice flour instead of whole wheat flour? Our new puppy is on a gluten free diet but I’d like her to be able to enjoy them as well. Have you tried this? How were the results? Thanks!
Mine are in the oven now and I switched out the wheat flour for almond flour. I’ll let you know how the turn out!
I am planning to make as give always…how do they turn out with almond flour?
I love this recipe! It’s super easy and every dog loves them. Even my parent’s pickiest pug loves them!
I just wish I knew if you can freeze them.
Let them cool completely first and they freeze great. Pull out a few at a time as needed
Good starting point easy to customize for your dogs needs. Substituted pumpkin for mashed sweet potatoes (pumpkin gives my dog diarrhea) also used reg flour instead of wheat. My lab hates peanut butter really wierd. But I kept the peanut butter and added two slices of bacon crumbled into bits to make the peanut butter appealing. Even with peanut butter bacon bits and flour. I KNOW these are still healthier than store bought treats. Thank you for the great canvas
Be careful Giving you furry friend bacon .. even bacon bits.. it can cause pancreatitis. All high fatty foods are bad for them. This recipe is perfect .. all three dogs gave them a paws up!
Yes! I work for a vet and we see So many cases of pancreatitis which can be deadly. Limit protein table scraps, especially pork!
how many dog treats does it make?
Please Chungah tell us in the recipe how many this makes of small or med. size treats also can you post in the recipe how to store these and how long they will last? I am not a dog owner but giving these as gifts 🙂 Would like to let them know how long they last and how to store them.
Mine made 12 3-1/2″ bone shape and 12 1-2/” rounds.
Very helpful!! Thank you, Nora 🙂
How should we store these?
Can you freeze them? If so for how long?
I haven’t tried these yet, but I was wondering, what could you use as a substitute for the pumpkin puree?
some people use squished bananas or broth but that’s a bit liquidy
You can use applesauce (no sugar added) or sweet potatoes, you’ll need a little more flour woth the applesauce but it worked fine for me. I also added a handful of spinach.
Cooked mashed winter squash (butternut and Hubbard both worked great)
you can substitute it for water. i have found that this makes them last longer to.
Finally a dog biscuit he likes! Fussy Labradoodle Baxter just loves these and it’s pleasing to know they are full of goodness and I know what’s in them. Thank you
My dog loved them!
Our little Henry and Ellie love, love, love these! I’ve made them 4 times now and just put the 5th batch in the oven. I figured your wonderful recipe was due for a rating and had to give it 5 stars ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you so much for sharing!
These taste great but they all bubbled and looked like pita bread, help me. What am i doing wrong?
Hello Michael.. I thought i would jump right on this one… I don’t believe you are doing anything wrong.. I believe that with the flour it is meant to happen.. I had the same thing happen to me.. I cut them in little 1 inch circles… and well the pup that I gave them to DID NOT complain.. she was super happy 🙂 I’m actually making more this week.. she has put in a special order for Christmas 🙂
Can I replace the whole wheat flour for something else?
I use rice flour! It can be expensive, but I buy whole brown rice and grind it using my coffee mill. 🙂
These dog treats are great!
I was wondering if you make a the dough can you freeze the dough for a later date and then defrost it and make the cookies then.
Please let me know
My dog loved them. I would suggest refrigerate them afterwards if not eating quickly. Mine got moldy in about 1 month time. I had in a mason jar so maybe that was the problem for them not being crunchy & remained soft and/or why they became moldy? Going to try another batch & refrigerate them this time because he did enjoy them and sometimes turn his nose up to store bought brand but never did with these.
I’ve made these over and over. My dog loves them! They are easy and fun to make with children too
These dog cookies have made me many new dog friends. I’m a cat love and don’t even have a dog but make these a lot for my new dog friends. One hint that I’ll give you to make them easier to roll, add more pumpkin, about 3/4 cup. Also for the older doggies, they like because they turn out softer. Make for Christmas gift for you Dog Friends!
Can you use white flour insted of whole wheat? I am just wondering because I have made a couple batches of wheat flour, and I am now out of that and I need to make quite a few batches for Christmas presents for my dogs. Anyways besides that, this is like the best dog tree I have ever made for my dog, it is simple, so I know what every single ingredient that is inside of it, It has peanut butter, which my dog loves! And so many other great things about it!
This is the best website I’ve ever seen made dog cookies they are the best things ever for you to cook
How long will they last unrefrigerated?
mine lasted about 2 weeks unrefrigerated, but near the end they started getting hard and my dog had some trouble biting them.
I just made these and my dog absolutely loves them!!!! she gobbled down tons in one bite! and I have to admit that when I tasted them I loved too!
MY DOGS LOVED THEM! AND I WILL TOTALLY USE THIS RECIPE AGAIN!
Easy to follow recipe. My dog loved them! I baked them to be a little soft at 20 minutes. These will be made a lot around here!
I love this idea I just finished making a bach for my dogs and they smell sooooooo good!!!!!
You are an angel!! I’ve been only making my babies freezer/fridge treat since I’ve started making my own. Like for 2 years. Baking n me not really a good combo. But I thought what the heck, worst could happen it would be a learning thing. But I’m still I. Shock came out beautifully the FIRST time! That NEVER happens to me… ever.. So on behalf of Soldier, Sophie, Bella and Kizy, thank you thank you thank you!!
These are super easy to make even if you don’t have a stand mixer, and they always come out perfect! My dogs absolutely love them <3
I love this recipe and I have made some for my neighbors
I made these for the second time in a few days and I made them so quickly. I simply microwaved the pumpkin, scooped out the pumpkin (no puree) and added it to the eggs and peanut butter. The pumpkin is super cheap, delicious and easy this way. I also used three small eggs. I’m keen to try variations to these with seeds and other items.
Made these tonight.ni complaints from Marley. She lives them. The store didn’t have pumpkin..apparently it’s one of the items hard to get during covid. I bought sweet potato baby food because I was too lazy to puree something. Turned out fine I think. Lol.
Nice 4 ingredient recipe using common food staples! My dog approved!
Hey! I tripled the batch and cut them with a shot glass since I only have dinosaur cookie cutters. It made 84 and my dogs love them! Super easy to make!
My dog is a picky eater, and won’t eat generic dog treats that are found in stores. However, he absolutely loves these! I thought they were super simple to make, with ingredients I had laying around the house.
A great never fail recipe. All dogs will love it.
Charlie went nuts over these! I made the batch x4 and it took me 2 hours. So with the effort
These are awesome and very easy Thanks! 🙂
My dog loved it!we did not have pumpkin Purée do we used apple sauce.it was his b-day so we made them for his friends to!
I have been making these for my Great Pyrenees for several months now. So much cheaper than store-bought and much better for him! I’ve never been much of a baker, but I am learning to master these. Very simple to follow recipe and fun to make too! I bought a set of dog bone shaped cutters and have made these for my friends who own Chihuahuas all the way up to Bloodhound. One of my friends told me her dog loved his and he is very picky over treats.
I read some other reviews and do substitute some of the wheat flour for oatmeal I grind up in the food processor and I add a touch of cinnamon too. I also add blueberries to half of the mix to give my fur baby an extra treat. NOTE: you will have to add more flour if you include blueberries. I’ve also learned if you turn the treats over about half to two-thirds through the baking time, it will make them crunchier and I use a fork to poke holes in them to keep them from puffing up.
This recipe is absolutely amazing! Thank you so much for sharing it with us!!!
Does parchment paper need to be used? Don’t have either or silicone mat.
Thanks!
does your recipe includes baking soda as an ingredient? cookies do not look flat, look like if they have baking soda o baking powder.
so yummy i think
so easy i could do it all day
Easy enough to make. I substituted flax meal and water for the eggs (1 tbsp flax to 3 tbsp water per large egg). Ended up only needing 2 ¼ cups of flour to get the dough right. Baked for 30 minutes. Dogs like them just fine. Next time I’ll bake longer to try and get them crispy. This batch was on the softer chewy side.
Great recipe! Peanut butter and pumpkin both my dogs love. I bought some bone shaped cookie cutters and made big treats for London the lab and smaller ones for Cody the corgi!
Hi there! What can I use instead of pumpkin puree?
Thanks in advance!
i don’
t know but who cares
Pumpkin is probably best because of consistency/digestibility/etc. You can usually find it at grocery stores not in the canned fruit/veggie aisle but in the aisle where the baking supplies are (flour, sugar, etc.)
You may be able to get away with home made unsweetened plain applesauce, but I haven’t tried it.
Do these need to be stored in frig
maybe some sweet potato pure or carrot pure
Easy to make, my golden loved them!
Mid-bake!
Wondering about storage instructions as I doubled the batch.
My instincts say okay room temp for about a week, so freeze the rest and bring out batches as needed – thoughts?
I make these for the dog upstairs, with his owner’s permission of course. I usually add two or three slices of chopped bacon and a half teaspoon of a few pumpkin pie spices especially cinnamon but not nutmeg. When I made them the other day it was so incredibly hot in the kitchen I did not use a cookie cutter, I simply cut them into diamond and trapezoid shapes. Trust me your dog does not care.
Good
i am abou to try this resipie for my dogo puppy
Good and my dog loved it and is still healthy!
These treats are very fun and easy to make. However, since I make them in bulk, I put them in the oven at 225° for many hours so they don’t become moldy as fast. My dogs, and all the dogs I make these treats for love them!!
Hi Katie! How many hours do you bake them for? How long do they usually last/how do you store them? I’m trying to find a long lasting recipe! Thank you ☺️
Same I’m wondering best storage and how long do they go before getting moldy?
I made a batch in May, did not refrigerate and they were still good in July. I made a batch three days ago and froze half.
I usually put them in there for at least 4 hours!
Hi Katie, thanks for the tip. Do you flip them over halfway through or just leave them in for 4 hours straight? Thanks!
I have been reading that treats with these ingredients should be stored in the fridge (keeps for couple months) or freezer (keeps six months) unless your dog(s) will be eating them within a couple weeks.
Can I ask how’s your hours you bake them? I am interested in preserving them a bit longer as well. Thanks
Easy to make, and my Shih Tzu loves them! I made a bunch of different bone shapes and used all organic materials. I have so many now and plan to give them to friends of mine with dogs in my neighborhood!
Do you need to keep in refrigerator?
We have 3 dogs at home, a Pitbull and 2 Chihuahua’s. They all love this recipe! Bigger size for our pibbles and smaller for the tiny tough guys. We also have several short term rental properties in Phoenix Arizona and we make these for guests if they are bringing their dogs and they’re always a huge hit! By far my favorite recipe for homemade dog treats!!!
Please make sure your PEANUT BUTTER does NOT contain XYLITOL (artificial sweetner)
I make a similar recipe and I made these today I tripled the batch and froze most of them. My dogs love these and I love knowing it is all organic and good for them and not filled with nasty fillers. Thanks for posting
Did you freeze them unbaked?
Those peanut butter cookie are they suppose to be hard
Can I substitute the pumpkin with mashed bananas? And can I make them in silicon dog mold, so kinda like drop cookies?
Easy to make, kid loves to help, dog devours the treats!
This was amazing for my 3 dog’s they all loved it
I made these for my dogs, and they loved them, so much. They had a happy look on their faces, and I just want to say thank you.
Please make sure you buy peanut butter which doesn’t contain xylitol, as this is toxic to dogs
My corgi absolutely loves these. I use a a small heart shaped cookie cutter and get around 80-90 cookies in one batch! My dog always gets tired of the same treats, but not these ones. She won’t leave the kitchen once the pumpkin has been opened.
Great recipe! I only had self raising wholmeal flour and sweet potato and still worked out.
My greedy Pugh loved them.
Sounds easy hope my furbaby likes them
I can’t believe I’m baking treats for my dog! She liked them so much that I’m waiting for a second batch to cool. I’ve substituted bananas for pumpkin since I had too many ripening.
My Kitchenaid seemed to be struggling first time out, so I switched out the batter beater for the dough hook. Worked much better.
I have 2 dachshunds. My 16 yro eats everything but my 9yro is so picky. He loves these and I love that I’m feeding them both something healthy!
These came out perfect, I used 2.5 cups of stone ground whole wheat flour, and the eggs were from pasture raised chickens, so a little smaller then normal (for the purpose of the hydration mix) – dough rolled out beautifully, after kneading it the same way I do bread dough. Rolled out to 1/4″ thick, and used a shot glass for a cookie cutter. Only baked 1/2 the dough, and froze the rest for later use. 1/2 the dough made 30 cookies.
I LOVE this recipie. My Puppy LOVED it. Thank you!!
Do I have to refrigerate because of the eggs? How long are these good for?
Hi, how long do these biscuits last ?
I made these on Tuesday and by Sunday I spotted mold I’m not exactly sure how to stop them from growing mold, but maybe we need to refrigerate them?
Have made these many times for several of our friend’s dogs as we are currently dog-less. Super easy, and everyone begs for more because their dogs will do ANYTHING when they bring out the treats! I add an egg wash to the tops and increase the baking time a wee bit. The dogs don’t really care how they LOOK it’s strictly for the human eye! Thank you.
these were so good for my dogs i ended up giving them to my neighbors and my friends they’re dogs loved it keep up the awesome work!!! can you make more dog treat recipe’s like this one??? thx.
It was perfect the first time. I learn so much from you as well! Keep it up great post.
Okay so i did have to use self raising flour so they’re a bit misshapen, but my dog LOVES these. They smell so good and they’re so easy!!
can my puppy eat these?
Our Shih Tzu–Winston–LOVES these homemade treats!
Hi there! I just made these today and my dogs are going crazy over them! Wanted to know what’s the shelf life on these? Is it best to store them room temp or can they be refrigerated/frozen? How long do they last?
Thank you from Sky & Ivy !
Sooooooo good! My dog is obsessed with these treats!
These sound amazing!I know it depends on how big or small the treats are but on average how many does this make? Or maybe a rough estimate of how many pounds?
Thank you so much for this awesome recipe. It was super easy to follow and my dog loves it. I used brown rice flour and it worked great. Definitely my go-to recipe for doggie treats. 🙂
Hi! If I don’t have pumpkin puree, what would be a good substitute? Or can I leave it out entirely? Thanks!
U can just get pumpkin and mash it
Thank you!
i just used pumpkin soup and turned out fine!
You can use banana instead
Thank you!
instead for which one
I used sweet potatoe!
Thank you so much!
My dog “poppy” amazingly loved them!!!!
Thanks again, Keep making treats I think that you do a really good job!
-Leah
I’d love to try these! Can I use regular plain flour? or wholemeal plain flour?
I want to know that too!
Regular flour doesn’t have a nutritional value to dogs so that’s why most pup recipes call for whole wheat or non-grain flours.
Awesome cookie recipe… My dog loved these cookies… The recipe was absolutely perfect the dough was so easy to make and rolled out so easily… I have no idea what these other people are saying when they say the dough was too dry and crumbly and they couldn’t get it to roll out they really should stay out of the kitchen this was the easiest recipe to make great job
My dogs LOVED THEM! Next time I will cook them a bit longer. I also had a situation where they raised air bubbles in the middle, not sure why. Do you know the shelf life of these if I keep them in a glass jar?
Thanks for a great, easy recipe!
Wow Dave. Tell us how you really feel.
We made this using a juice glass for a cutter, no shape needed however the cookie formed a pocket like a pita when we cut them in half to made the calories 20 each. Maybe i kneaded some air, but it was perfect for a pill or extra PB. I’ll never buy cookies again! Thanks
These dog treats my dog loved and it was so easy to make. I would rather give my dog these treats then the store bought treats.
I found this site while searching for some peanut butter treats to make for my fox terrier and the family pit bull, dalmatian, lab cross .
I got everything together and made these beautiful looking treats that night. The only substitute I mad was switching egg crystals with 2 Tbs water for fresh. I must say the dough rolled out silky with a great texture and baked up every bit as pretty as they look in the pictures! The smell is wonderfully worm with a light sweet touch. The cookies also take an impression well. I used the back of a fork and put “bark” and “woof” on some of them. To cut the treats I used a bone cutter 3 in x 1 in and with rolling the dough to the recipe thickness got about 68 cookies. Both of the dogs loved them!
followed the directions and they turned out exactly as described! Approx. 2 and 3/4 cup of whole wheat flour. Baked 22 minutes.
My dog LOVES them .LOTS of drooling ( he’s a Boxer dog) Next time I would make the bones a little thinner and us a bigger cookie cutter. This recipe worked great. Thank you.
Super easy! Makes a ton! Had extra dough to freeze. My half lab half jack Russell loves them. I would like to have some meat in them though. Totally great to freeze.
These were fun and very easy to make. Thanks for the recipe and video. My two black labs loved them, but I must admit labradors are not the most discerning of canine groups! Ha! I’ve been working on low salt treats for one of them and this really helped. Any ideas about storage? Do folks freeze them? Can I just keep them in a cookie container? How long do they last?
Thanks again!
You can totally freeze the dough. Not so sure about the treats themselves though. Storing them in an airtight container works well.
These were amazing!! My Pomeranian loves them so much and when he finished his treats he was begging for more! They are the perfect texture for my pup! They also have the perfect amount of the ingredients! I 100% recommend theses dog treats for your puppy! My puppy can get enough of them!
What else do you do when you have been in quarantine for a month? Make your grand puppy dog treats. Followed directions, but only used 2 cups of white whole wheat flour. Pita loved them!
My dogs absolutely loved the treats. One of my dogs is gluten-free so I used half almond flour and half gluten-free flour and then I used almond butter instead of peanut butter. You can really mix up what you use depending on allergies your dog may have or just preferences. my other dog that doesn’t have any allergies to love to the recipe just as much as my other dog did.
Almonds are difficult for dogs to digest and not recommended.
Had to use a lot more flour than it said, My dog love’s them so much.
No whole wheat flour or wheat germ…can I just use white flour???
Got a little bored during quarantine so I decided to make these for my shih tzu pup. He’s obsessed. When he gets one he’ll beg for more and will wait until you give it to him! I’m sharing this recipe with all my friends and cannot wait to make him more of them. I don’t even think I used a cup of flour, I found 3 cups to be way too much, but they came together so well!
Got a little bored during quarantine so I decided to make these for my shih tzu pup. He’s obsessed. When he gets one he’ll beg for more and will wait until you give it to him! I’m sharing this recipe with all my friends and cannot wait to make him more of them.
Hi, these are awesome how do you store them and how long do they keep?
Treats came out great! I used larger cookie cutters in the shape of a star and it cooked just as well! If you do not have whole wheat flour you can use 3/4 cups of regular flour with 1/4 cup of wheat germ! My dog loved them.
Not impressed. Followed directions and the mix is so dry and crumbly you can’t work with it, you can’t knead it or roll it out. Threw the whole damn thing in the garbage. Waste of time and ingredients!!!
Damn Gail… Maybe a little perspective? #1 it´s pretty cheap ingredients #2 the world is facing a pandemic and you´re complaining about dog treats? At least you´re not in the hospital? At least you appear to have the time and money to be baking while other´s are fighting to save lives or their own lives? Sooo let´s calm down, yea?
A little on the harsh side. Not cool!
Yea Gail I agree with Mary. Also is it possible that maybe you cant follow directions properly. Where it calls for 2.25-3 Cups four, did you happen to just throw all three cups in at once, or did you add it in stages and visually inspect the dough. This is a very straight forward recipe that works great. So calm down and try to act a little more positive.
I stopped at 2 cups of flour as the dough felt perfect, but I used high-gluten pizza flour as it’s all I have. I don’t know if that made a difference. If you’re working with cookies or something similar and the dough is dry, add a little water. It’s something I learned last Christmas when I was making sugar cookies.
So the mix was dry and you didn’t try to add more peanut butter or pumpkin to save your batter before creating unnecessary waste? Wow, must be nice to have a life good enough to where a dog treat recipe set you off.
I thought these worked great. If you can’t say something nice, maybe just keep quiet. This time more than ever we should try to be kind to each other.
Gail you must not have a clue of what you’re doing in the kitchen because I made these cookies exactly as directed and then mix was not dry or crumbly so I think you need to stay out of the kitchen
Just made them for my French bulldog 🙂 hope she will like it!
Super easy to make and they smell delicious!
Thank you for lovely idea to keep my dog healthy and happy.
maybe you didnt use enough of something – i had 1/3 pumpkin one time n just reduced the amount of flour when i realized my mistake. this dough is amazing and i often end up using too much peanut butter and having to add flour. my dobie Rex luvs them!!! evey batch that comes out the over he has to come inspect… and get a taste lol. dough is so silky and soft!!!
When I made these following the recipe, I had the same result. The dough was really dry and crumbly, and I had too much flour, even though I only had 2 cups of flour in. You know what I did? I added two spoons of pumpkin and a spoon of peanut butter before adding the last 1/2 cup of flour, and it came out fantastic. Dough wasn’t sticky, and the treats baked beautifully. Whether or not you give this another try, don’t just dump the ingredients and call it quits. Try to make a solution on your own first! The nice thing about these treats is that the ingredients are very simple. Any mistakes made in the recipe are easy to fix!
With my little fix, they came out perfect and my dog loves them. Would absolutely make these again.
If I don’t have pumpkin at home, could I replace that with bananas instead? How many would you recommend?
Since it’s a puree, I would recommend mashing bananas into a mushy consistency and using the same amount once it’s measured out. But be careful doing bananas with animals, it can upset their stomachs.
My dogs loved this recipe. They go crazy for it. I make two different sizes because one of my dogs is pretty big and the other is fairly small.
Super easy and fast. I ended up only using 2 1/4 cup flour.
These treats are awesome! They’re so easy to make with very easy to afford ingredients that your dogs will love! I made mine very small in order to get the most bang for my buck and double the recipe to get as many as I could. It was totally worth it! Thank you!
Dogs love them!
My dog friends love these Cookies and I have more Dog friends because of the cookies. I always have extra Pumpkin so I decided to add extra pumpkin to the recipe and the cookies are chewy and MUCH easier to roll out!
My dog loved these treats! Everytime I go to the fridge door he will whine softly then I will grab the jar and he will start shaking. Once I pull a treat out he will start barking and running in circles. For the most part these treats are easy to make but they are very dry and it is hard to get the flour into the rest of the dough. I usually cut short on the flour. Other than that these are simple, fun, and very loveable. I am going on my 3rd time baking them today.
Currently have a batch in the oven. I added banana to the mix as I do not have any pumpkin. My two dogs were circling the counter like sharks. I think they’ll like them! 🙂
Out of three dogs one I’d highly allergic to eggs..what can I do to replace them…
Use 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce for every egg.
Works for baking whether for humans or our furry
loved ones 🙂
I loveeee these dog treats!!! They came out perfectly!!! I used a little less flour though. I have made them three times now and my dog LOVES them!!! This was the first recipe I looked at and the last one!!! Amazing recipe!!!
What can you use if you dont have whole wheat flour
Thanks
can you pot them in the freeze?
fenton
I’ve made these before and loved them!
The local grocery stores are low on canned goods, but I’m working from home and it’s just my dog and I. I want to make her a treat!
I’ve secured white flour, eggs, and peanut butter.
Anyone know of something I could substitute for the pumpkin puree?
Thanks!
Puree some cooked carrots/apples/applesauce
I steamed a small sweet potato and mashed it.
My two Saint Bernards get dry kibble, but I always split a can of dog food between them and add it to their dry to make their meals more enjoyable. Since it’s harder to get canned dog food now, I’m making mine go further by adding rice or pasta and cooked vegetables to two cans of dog food. Sometimes I add meat or eggs. I make a pot of this combination and measure it out via the dog food can and package it in sandwich-sized Ziploc bags, and then refrigerate them. I heat a bag up by putting them in hot water for 15 minutes before serving. I make enough for two days. As I feed my dogs three times a day to prevent bloat, this comes to six bags. This way, I get three meals off of one can. I’m going to continue to do this after the pandemic as it’s healthier and costs less.
my dogs loved it, i made 15 for now. 5 for each doggo. I also added oats to the top, would definitely recommend this recipe ❤️
Could you make this without pumpkin puree
Yes, Banana works great!
My dogs absolutely loves these treats! I have 5 dogs and everyone of them love them. Thanks for the recipe!
The original recipe is great. Unfortunately, pumpkin puree is not packaged in tw0-thirds cup portions. My local grocery has 29-ounce cans which is 3 and one-half times that of a tw0-thirds cup. Therefore, I increased the balance of the ingredients by 3.5 times to create enough to share. Also, I made them gluten-free by replacing all wheat flour with freshly ground oat flour. Simply blend rolled oats in a food processor for 30-60 seconds.
My modified ingredient list includes…
11 cups oat flour, plus one more for dusting
1 cup peanut butter
7 eggs
one 29-ounce can pumpkin puree
I used a 6-quart Kitchen Aid mixer, adding one cup of flour at a time to the wet mixture until well incorporated. Before you add the eleventh cup of flour, check to button of the mixer to see if any dry oat flour is hiding under the moistened dough.
Thank you Jeff for your modified recipe. I have the huge cans of pumpkin too so this is super helpful. We also have a gluten allergy in the house, so the oat flour will work perfectly!
These are awesome! I followed the recipe but instead of three cups of flour I used two cups of flour and one cup of oats. I rolled them thin and baked them for 25 minutes. They came out crunchy. On one batch I drizzled honey. My dogs loved them!
My two grandchildren, age 6 and 4, had a blast making these dog treats. They wanted to eat them but the dogs did and loved. I had to throw out some of the biscuits as they got moldy after a week. The recipe did not mention refrigeration but definitively they need refrigerated even though they felt fairly hard. Maybe I didn’t bake long enough to prevent this or maybe since there aren’t preservatives they should be refrigerated either way.
These treats are so easy to make and my doggies love them. I don’t mind that they are a little soft. I have older dogs so these are easy on their teeth. I read the other reviews and i only had to use 2 1/2 cups of flour instead of 3. No biggie. Thank you so much for this recipe!!!!!!!
Easy recipe my dogs LOVE them…
so sure they’re “dog treats” but did anyone try them? Because I’m gonna
Me too
A great recipe. Though, I made some changes to this recipe and found that 3 cups of flour were too much and cut back to two cups. I added another egg as the eggs were small. This change made the mixture thick and easy to bake. I did use parchment to roll out the dough as it was heavy and unwieldy. the biscuits came out lovely in 25 minutes.
I made this for my dog and my friends dog and they both loved is so much!! Once we ran out they begged for more but we couldn’t otherwise they’d get sick and throw up everywhere! I’m planning to make this again. Would it be okay to add half a banana or a full one? Or would that mess it up?
Our 14-1/2 year old Boston Terrier is VERY picky about her treats and meals but I’m delighted to report that she loved them! I made them as an activity on a snow day with my 5-year old granddaughter who’s obsessed with Mabel. My only comments are that I’d use my food processor with a dough hook next time because there’s a lot of flour in this particular recipe. Also, I’ll add some chopped cooked bacon when we make them again. Thanks!!
These are a couple of the changes I made:
Substitute 1 cup ground oatmeal and add it with the 2 cups flour
add 1/2 cup finely chopped cooked bacon to dough before rolling out.
After baking, when treats have cooled down, drizzle bacon grease very lightly over the tops. Put grease in a ziplock type baggy after it’s cool enough so as not to melt the bag but still liquid enough to drizzle it and snip a tiny hole in the corner of the bag (go easy so you aren’t adding too much extra fat).
Bacon and bacon grease isn’t good for dogs. It can cause pancreatitis.
Too much flour. Best to slowly add flour. Really only needs about 2 1/4 – 2 1/2. Dogs liked them warm but not too crazy about them cold! Good basic recipe though! Will make again.
I followed this recipe to the letter but they puffed up and were soft. I left them in a bit longer to try and fix but it didn’t really work.
Any ideas how I can avoid the puff and have a snap-able cookie?
My dogs loves these treats and I was pleased how quickly they came together. I didn’t have canned pumpkin and used canned sweet potatoes. The mix was dry, so used a bit less flour and added some of the liquid from the sweet potatoes. My first sheet of treats did puff up so I poked the next batch with the tines of a fork and I had less “puff” and a nice decorative pattern on the treats. I will make these again and will use the bacon bits for extra flavor my Chesapeake retriever will love.
The recipe was great and my dog loved them. The only issue I found was that the amount of flour called for was too much. I had to add more pumpkin and peanut butter after the 2 1/2 cups of flour because the dough was way too dry.
Recommendations for peanut butter and pumpkin puree products to use for this recipe?
Made these last night for the first & not last time. Happily turned out just like the picture. Quick & easy (& a little fun) to prepare. 4 happy dogs! I might try alternating with sweet potato for variety. (Note: Used about 2.5 cups flour.) Looked around online for other recipes, but haven’t come across anything I found more promising & straightforward as this one. I like the simple, healthy (& for my sake) vegetarian ingredients. Thank you!
P.S. My first time leaving a recipe review, but I rely on reviews & am very pleased with these results! Wanted to share. 🙂
All my friends’ dogs loved them but I would advise that you do not put them in a plastic bag since they cool semi-soft. In less than a two week period being in a plastic ziploc bag the treats started to mold. I would advise drying them til they were hard or keeping in the refrigerator if you wanted them semi soft.
My girl is SO SO picky. These are a hit. Simple and quick to make. Thank you for this recipe, she’s a happy girl. And the food driven boy obviously loves them lol
I didn’t find a bone cookie cutter but used a lid. Made about 100. Took very little time/effort and my 3 dogs love them! Did I mention safe and cost effective?! Thank you.
Three cups of flour would have been way too much. I used a scant 2 1/2 cups and the dough was workable and easy to roll. They came out perfect. We have a set of miniature cookie cutters in Christmas shapes and you wouldn’t believe how neat these looked. A double batch made about a hundred. All our friends with dogs got a little tin of treats and the dogs were all crazy about them. My own little dog–a fussy eater–liked them a lot. I’ve made dog treats before but this was by far the best liked and didn’t wind up being so costly as other recipes I’ve tried that call for weird stuff like wheat germ and honey. Thanks for posting this great recipe!
I’ve made these twice now. My dogs love them. I definitely recommend baking 25 minutes. Will certainly make again!
Cindi, what size cookie cutter did you use? I have a small bone cookie cutter and my dog is 14 pounds. You said you would recomment baking 25 minutes. But if you made larger treats, I shouldn’t bake my small ones for 25 minutes. Please advise as I am going to make some next weekend.
My 9 month old English Mastiff pup loves these! I only needed 2 and 1/2 cups of wheat flour instead of 3. I recommend that if you are making these for the first time, start with 2 and 1/2 cups and add more if necessary. I made these for Christmas for all of the pups in our family, and they thoroughly enjoyed them!
Great biscuits! I’ve made these several times already and always freeze extra dough so we can bake more before he runs out! My dog loves these cookies! Still goes crazy every day. Thanks for the recipe!
Awesome with oat flour, just need to add more. Dough was super easy to handle!
My dog is going nuts for these, so thank you for the receipe… however I need a little help here if you don’t mind, I made the dough as directed, started with hand electric mixer and finished by hand, dough came out fabulous. The baking part is where I’m struggling, I don’t bake much because I’m not good at it. I have a very small wall oven (probably from the 70s) typically cookies that call for 11 minutes take 7 minutes. I baked my first batch for 15 minutes on the middle rack, they came out like cookies, soft , half of them puffed up others didn’t and others still were half puffed. My second batch for 20 and some are dark brown and very hard.
I realize my dough might not be perfectly uniform in thickness but Should they puff? And why aren’t they all puffing uniformly? Should they be Chewy or crunchy(I realize that may be a taste preference for your pup). My dog won’t leave me alone so regardless of how they look, they apparently taste awesome. I’m making these as gifts for the daycare staff so i want them to look decent and I’m far from that. I appreciate any help here.
Hello! I made these for my brother’s rat terrier, and he loved them to death! The dog biscuits should come out crispy n’ crunchy! To help with the puffing-up, use a fork to poke 3 holes in the middle of the biscuit. using the spokes.
Sincerely, Abigail
My doggy friends (I’m a Cat lover) look for me because of these cookies. Dogs that are being walked, sit in my driveway and won’t move until I come out, or sit in their backyard and whimper and till he gets my attention for a cookie. I’ve been adding more pumpkin puree and the cookies are softer and it uses up the puree. 4 Barks for these cookies!
First thing I wanted to say was that I made these without using a mixer of any kind – I just used a wooden spatula and then as the mixture got stodgier I used my hands and the treats came out perfectly (so no need for expensive equipment if you don’t have).
(I’d scrolled through the comments looking to see if anyone else had mentioned this and couldn’t find any – I nearly didn’t try them because of not having the mixer but I’m so glad I did!)
I’m a dog walker and I’m going to make these for my doggy clients as Christmas presents! My own cockapoo loved them!
When do they expire? My dogs love them.
They get moldy after about a week! I recommend you keep them in an airtight container in the refrigerator, whee they will stay fresh for 1 week. I recommend you devour them after a couple days though, a week at the most!
Sincerely, Abigail
I’ve made these for the past few Christmas seasons for some co-workers; I’m making 4x the batch this year and EVERYBODY says their dogs (and some cats!) love these. Thank you for this recipe!
My dog loves these treats. Simple preparation. I just used my food processor and it all came together. I didn’t have a cookie cutter. I just rolled the Dough in a large rectangle, and cut into squares with a pizza cutter. Thanks for a easy recipe. My friend Benson is happy
Please note as I didn’t see it mentioned anywhere in the recipe…..there are some brands of peanut butter designed for humans that contain xylitol….which is TOXIC to dogs. This has been known for several years so your readers need to ensure they have looked at the ingredients in the peanut butter chosen to use for their treats to be sure it doesn’t contain xylitol.
Thank you for reminding us of this, and teaching others. So important!
My pups LOVED these!!
Awesome
Not only does my little Ecuadorian pup love these treats, but I volunteer at a state-run aviary, and the parrots and macaws can’t get enough of them either.
The recipe is super simple and easy to substitute and/or add ingredients (like adding some small seeds in the bird version). I sometimes also add cooked, mashed sweet potato. I roast my own peanuts for peanut butter, so no sugar added (except the sweet potato), and I use calabaza squash because North American pumpkin isn’t popular here (I’ve never even seen the canned version in the stores). I use any combination of variations of flour and I also add some rolled oats (the “quick” variety).
EXCELLENT!
I forgot to add that I’m baking at altitude (8500 feet), and I wanted to extend the shelf life. I lowered the temperature and cooked them in the convection oven. The thicker the treat, the longer it takes to cook. Thicker ones were cookie-like the first time around, so I fiddled with temp and time.
We have 5 dogs and alot of goats…they all enjoy Blue Dog Bakery treats, which gets expensive! The dogs liked these, the goats not so much! The only problem I had was that they puffed up will baking and were kind of soft. I am going to try poking air holes with a fork before baking next time.
I have a question….i can’t remark on them because i never made them…but i want to know can all purpose flour be used?
Wondering if I can use regular un bleached flour instead of whole wheat?
You can substitute all-purpose flour but it is not as healthy as whole wheat flour. I would also check with your pet’s veterinarian to check for any possible allergies.
I like to concept, but I used canned pumpkin (not pie filling) and at 2 cups of wheat flour, the dough was way too dry. Is there an alternative to fresh pumpkin puree or something to add to the recipe (water?) to make it more manageable?
chicken broth, add teaspoons as needed
Make sure any broth is free from garlic and onion, bone broth would be best.
Not sure what I did wrong but I followed the recipe as written and could not bring the ingredients together. It was just a crumbly mess, I added more pumpkin and another egg and still could not roll them out. Any suggestions? I hate to throw all of these ingredients out,
Easy to make but do they need to be refridgerated
Made these for my six month old cockapoo puppy and she can’t eat them quickly enough. I also gave some to my neighbours for their dogs and again a great success. These will most definitely be a forever feature in my doggy treat recipe book.
I ended up not needing any more than 2 1/2 cups of flour, the dough came out perfect! I baked for 20 minutes which ended up being a bit too long… but the dogs didn’t mind, they chewed them down! 🙂
My dogs loved it they both chowed down on the treat and we gave the treat to them on one of their birthdays they loved it and it turned out pretty good
Wondering if these could be made and frozen.
Just came across this recipe this morning before I went shopping. Had everything but pumpkin purée, but managed to get some. Just made them, my beagle was with me every step of the way! She loves them! Brilliant recipe and so easy to make. Dough consistency was perfect with 2 and a quarter cup of flour. I used gluten free flour. Next time i will freeze the extra dough as there are too many treats for her to get through in a week. Thanks for the great recipe .
Can you make these biscuits without pumpkin. [email protected]
Unfortunately, without having tried this myself, I cannot answer with certainty. But if you get a chance to try it, please let me know how it turns out! Good luck! 🙂
My dogs absolutely love these!!! And it is so easy and affordable to make! My 2 year old pug has never wanted to go in his crate before without a fight and a chase down to get him in. But since I’ve been giving him these he goes in without any argument! Thank you so much for posting this recipe! Your a life save and a money saver!! And my pug is a super picky eater but my boxer will ear anything! And an added bonus I’d that my boxer can stomach eating these without any problems at all! Every other test thet I’ve given her has made her stomach upset and made her go potty alot. Are there any other recipes that I could try out? I am new to the whole trying to find recipes online, lol! And do you have any recipes that I could make for me and my husband maybe?
Made 2nd and 3rd batch. Dogs love them and the treats keep well for a week in cookie jar. 3rd batch I flash froze to baked off next week.
My dog is allergic to pumpkin so I ended up using a can of tuna in its place (it’s all I had my cabinet at the time and just was being too lazy to go to the store and get applesauce or bananas) but it worked out tremendously! Although it does smell kind of odd while baking, they love love loved them!
Nan and I made these doggie treats for Nan’s dog, Maisy. She absolutely LOVED them. They were so much fun to make. We added some grated carrot and flaxseed oil. We tried them too. They tasted like hard scones. Yay. Thanks for this recipe.
How long will these keep if stored in an airtight container? Can these be frozen after baking to keep for longer periods of time?
BTW: I LOVE your blog and your pups!
These can be kept at room temperature for a few days but I recommend storing them in the fridge (or freezer) to extend shelf life. But methods for optimal food storage and shelf life should be based on good judgment and what you are personally comfortable with. Hope that helps, Virginia!
My two love the plain I made for testing, today we will make above Peanut butter treats and I will try to make them neater.
Thanks
Christina…
Can you add Beet juice to naturally color them pink? Would that alter the texture?
What a great idea! But unfortunately, without having tried this myself, I cannot answer with certainty. But if you get a chance to try it, please let me know how it turns out! 🙂
Baked these for dog event in my neighborhood. My dog and other dogs there lived them? Even picky eaters.
Hi there, I was just wondering if you could add some bacon grease to this to maybe give it a little flavor? or would that be overdoing it? Thank you for your help!
What a great idea! But unfortunately, without having tried this myself, I cannot answer with certainty. But if you get a chance to try it, please let me know how it turns out! 🙂
I definitely think you could add bacon grease, as the only fat is from the egg yolk and the peanut butter. You may want to cut back the peanut butter in order to add the bacon grease though. Do let us know how it worked!
Please help!
I put together all of the ingredients as stated but it took a wrong turn somewhere, my dough is very sticky. I can’t knead it to use cookie cutters. What would you suggest? Thanks.
Shanda, you can add an additional 1/4 cup flour at a time just until the dough is no longer sticky. 🙂
Very very good pups love them
I just have a couple questions if anyone could answer them for me. How many cookies did you get out of the batch? Thanks in advance
It really depends on how thick you roll them and what size cutter you used. I doubled tis batch, and was able to get 41 bags (2 Cookies per bag) in various sizes.
Abouts how big was your cookie cutter ?
I got 51, 2 inch dog bone biscuits out of a batch.
This is my first time baking dog treats.
My dog is picky and he loves these treats.
Very easy and tasty too ! I had to take a bite so my spoiled rotten baby would eat it . Lol ( really need too know how long you can store them for though.
I am making these today for my german shepherds 1st birthday. She loves pumpkin and peanut butter so these seem perfect. I am wondering though, after they are made how long the shelf life is and if they need to be refrigerated? Thank you for the recipe!!
That’s so sweet! Happy birthday to your pup! 🙂
These can be kept at room temperature for a few days but we recommend storing them in the fridge (or freezer) to extend shelf life. But methods for optimal food storage and shelf life should be based on good judgment and what you are personally comfortable with.
Would you be able to throw them in the freezer to extend the life even longer ?
I’ve put them in the freezer and thawed them back out with no problems. Dogs still loved them!
Not only did my dog love them, my parrots also think they are fabulous.
Love this recipe but I’m making these for a local store which has a lot of fur baby traffic… no refrigeration so I am wondering could I leave the eggs out and use nana purée to keep them shelf stable without refrigeration?
Thansk

What a great idea! But unfortunately, without having tried this myself, I cannot answer with certainty. But if you get a chance to try it, please let me know how it turns out! 🙂
this is my first attempt with your damn delicious dog treat recipe although i have experimented with so many other of your recipes over the years!
my question is, do you recommend refrigerating the dough before rolling it out? i know with cookie dough, that always seems helpful to make the dough more pliable. i haven’t ever gotten my nerve up to make bread, only an occasional pizza crust! please advise and thank you!!
p.s. i used my homegrown pumpkin pureé from last year’s (frozen) pumpkin harvest as my family and i own and operate a pumpkin patch and corn maze and more!! this year i’m hoping to sell homemade dog treats with our homegrown pumpkin and your damn delicious recipe!
thank you ! (:
You can absolutely refrigerate the dough if you wish but I personally don’t think you need to! 🙂
I love to make dogs treats for my and my boyfriend
Dogs
Easy to make and the dogs loved them. Much less expensive than buying treats at the store.
Oh my lanta I have been like for a recipe like this forever!!!! But this is so amazing and helpful!!! Me and my friend will be making these and selling them at our craft sale!!!! Now that I mention that, how many do you think we should have in a baggie??? 5-10 maybe?????
5-10 sounds like a good amount, Gracie! 🙂
Hello,
I tried the recipe for the first time today. Very easy to make. Pups are going to love them. My only question is how do I get the treats to not bubble when they are baking?
My cousin is so happy that she’s not the only one that says “oh my lanta!”
LOL
My daugther and her friend are thinking of making these for a craft sale as well! I was just curious how much you ended up charging for each baggie. I’m not sure how to price them! Thanks for any suggestions!
How many cookies does this batch make ?
Furbabies love thesea nd they are so easy! The dough rolls out beautifully.
My dog is obsessed! I only needed 2.5 cups of flour for this recipe, I didn’t need to add in anymore. This was super simple to make and I already had all the ingredients at home so it wasn’t a hassle to go out and buy everything:)
4 Th time making these!!!!! Dog loves them! I add a snack size cup of applesauce as saw in another recipe! I’m making big batch Freeze a dozen per bag!
Can these be made with regular all purpose flour?
You can substitute all-purpose flour but it is not as healthy as whole wheat flour. I would also check with your pet’s veterinarian to check for any possible allergies.
how many does this recipe make?
It’s really hard to say – it all depends on the size of the cookie cutters that you use.
They are the best things I’ve ever made for my vet and they actually love them
I made these for my 10 yr old 9 month Siberian husky. He loves them. He’s always loved to steal rolls off the counter at breakfast. But now he has his cookies! Riddick barks thank you!
I have not tried this recipe yet… but I will. But PLEASE be aware that you must use pumpkin puree and NOT PUPMKIN PIE FILLING, this is poisonous to your dog! If you have already used pie filling don’t worry a small amount won’t do much harm, but over time it can be very harmful. Also a side benefit to this recipe is… if you have a dog that eats your other dogs feces, the pumpkin in the treats will make the feces distasteful to the dog that’s eating it.
Pumpkin pie filling is not poisonous, Rhonda. It just has added spices and sugar. Not healthy for a dog but don’t tell people it’s poisonous.
Nicole, I think that Rhonda may have been referring to the spices that are often used in canned pumpkin pie filling like nutmeg which is toxic to dogs in even small doses.
What’s the shelf life of these cookies once baked?
A few days at least but as I am not an expert on food safety, I cannot really say with certainty. Methods for optimal food storage and shelf life should be based on good judgment and what you are personally comfortable with.
Have yet to try out the recipe for my pups, but may I know if there are other flour alternatives to use for this recipe such as almond flour (for dogs with sensitive stomach)?
If so, what would be measurements be and any things to take note when using other types of flour for this recipe?
I would imagine it would be a 1:1 ratio but as always, please use your best judgment when making substitutions and modifications.
I just made these with oat flour instead of whole wheat flour and they turned out great. I used the same amount of oat flour as is called for in the recipe. I did make my own oat flour from rolled oats by grinding them up in my blender at high speed. My dog is loving these!
I made a bunch of these treats for my dog’s first birthday party. All the dogs that came and my dog absolutely loved it! I’ve never made any kind of homemade treats before but making these was so easy and they came out looking so good. Will definitely make again!
This is the 2nd time I’ve used this recipe for our 8 year old Schnauzer. He absolutely loves them! He knew what I was making when I opened the can of pumpkin, he came running into the kitchen. This time I added Blueberries, so far they still seem to be a hit! Thanks for the great recipe!
So I havent given them to my parent’s 6 month old puppy yet, but I did make them and actually turned them into little peanut butter sandwich cookies for him with an icing made from corn starch, peanut butter, and honey. He has loved every other treat I’ve made him, so I’m crazy excited to see how much he’s going to love these (VERY) special treats!!!0
My picky Beagle loves these treats. I make double batches and freeze some of them for future use. These are the only treats she will take without double sniffing them!!
Any recommendations on peanut butter brands that are good/safe for dogs?
Eileen, I recommend using a peanut butter brand that does not contain xylitol.
My dog (Snickers) absolutely loves these!!!
How long do these keep in ziploc bags?
These can be kept at room temperature for a few days but I recommend storing them in the fridge (or freezer) to extend shelf life. But methods for optimal food storage and shelf life should be based on good judgment and what you are personally comfortable with.
They smell good, pups are drooling sniffing them. They haven’t completely cooled yet but are they suppose to be soft or firm when done and cooled? if they’re suppose to be firm do i cook them longer next time? i was scared to burn them. & in the fridge are they ok for about a week or so? what if i freeze them?
If the treats are baked for longer, they will be a bit more firm. These can be kept at room temperature for a few days but I recommend storing them in the fridge (or freezer) to extend shelf life. But methods for optimal food storage and shelf life should be based on good judgment and what you are personally comfortable with. Hope that helps, Kirsten!
I was wondering, can I use applesauce instead of pumpkin puree?
Sure!
It’s smell very nice I was baking this for the first time want to know if they have to be soft from inside
The dogs love these treats so much so they prefer these to cooked Organic chicken breast! The dogs are a German Shepherd, Collie, Labrador, Labrapoo, Shih Tzux, & Bichon Frese.(The last two dogs are mine the others are my brother’s). When the dogs come over to visit..live next door..they get chicken and since discovering this treat for dogs they get this also. They walk in searching for the treats ignoring the chicken!
These look great! how do you store them and how long will they last?
Thanks,
Leah
These can be kept at room temperature for a few days but I recommend storing them in the fridge (or freezer) to extend shelf life. But methods for optimal food storage and shelf life should be based on good judgment and what you are personally comfortable with.
They do mold after about a week, so I keep in the freezer and just take out a few at a time.
Amazing
I have made these twice, and my dog loves them. He is getting older, and has arthritis in his hip, so I add some turmeric to try and help with his inflammation. Thank you for the recipe.
Can I ask how much tumeric you put in per batch? And do you use the capsules and just open them up?
I meant turmeric not tumeric
I make these treats every Sunday afternoon. My dogs love them so much that they fake having to go out & try to get a treat. It is hilarious!! Very easy recipe & the shapes can be fun also. Thanks for posting it!!
This is so funny! I thought my dog was the only one who did this haha! I can’t wait to try these 🙂
I have thre different breed dogs. Chiwienie, blue healer, and a lab/bulll mix. They love these treats! Cant go out the door without them getting one or two!
I made these treats for my dog today. We are trying to give him snacks low in salt. He stayed in the kitchen the whole time waiting. Once they cooled I gave him one and he loved them!! Thanks for the recipe 🙂 We will definitely make them again.
That’s awesome!
Can I use coconut flour instead flour
What a great idea! But unfortunately, without having tried this myself, I cannot answer with certainty. But if you get a chance to try it, please let me know how it turns out! 🙂
I used rice flour as my dog has gluten allergies (schnauzer) and it worked well and she loves them. I add CBD to help with her anxiety and pain. She is in heart failure. My lab mix has cancer and he loves them and has benefited from the CBD as well. He is moving better and less stiff. Thanks for the recipe.
I use a gluten free flour that replaces the whole wheat flour cup for cup for all my puppies home made treats and they turn out great!
My dog loves these. I doubled the recipe and froze multiple smaller batches for later.
Made these for my Brother’s German Shepherd! Supposedly, both my Bro AND Dad (Who Co-Cares for the Shepherd) claim he doesn’t like “treats”….BOY WERE THEY WRONG! HE LOVES EM! Thankeeeees, Sharing the recipe! ✌
Dog approved! Made these today and used sweet potato puree instead of pumpkin (as I had it handy). OMG! My dog LOOOVES them! She loves them more than any of her other treats (and she has plenty to love). She went nuts! Thank you!
I can’t review the recipe, but I was inspired by it & your comments. Using what I had on hand, I made treats from rolled oats, peanut butter, pureed carrot with potato (made as a base for my boys’ daily food), a dash of hemp oil and organic powdered milk, and enough wheat flour for shaping. I patted out a handful at a time and cut into wedges and squares with a knife. Baked for 7 mins at 350 F on a lightly greased (olive oil) sheet. The carrot adds a hint of sweetness. I may start making these for on the go snacks for myself.
Also in hand is peanut butter powder and flax seeds. Will experiment with those on a future batch. Thanks all for the recipe and your ideas!
I made these this weekend and my pup LOVES them! How long do you think they’ll keep if stored in either a zip-lock bag or an airtight container?
These can be kept at room temperature for a few days but I recommend storing them in the fridge (or freezer) to extend shelf life. But methods for optimal food storage and shelf life should be based on good judgment and what you are personally comfortable with. Hope that helps, Stephanie!
These treats are so easy to make and are delicious (for my dog!) It’s my dog Boo’s birthday and he’s in love with these treats! Thank you for the great recipe.
Awwwww, happy birthday, Boo!
How many treats does this make?
I am a teacher and am looking for a learning service project and though about making dog treats for the homeless shelter for those with pups.
It’s really hard to say – it all depends on the size of the cookie cutters that you use.
I have used this recipe a few times as gifts for friends/clients. Each time they say the dogs love them, and I can confirm that the recipe is super easy! Thanks so much for posting it.
Quite unexpectedly, the texture of the dough reminded me of pasta dough. I though, “What the heck,” and made some linguine today with the leftover dough. To my surprise, it made a pasta with great texture that tasted quite nice, as well… I just added some butter to the cooked pasta to try it out.
Dog Treat Pasta. Who would have known?
I made these for Christmas as a gift to all of the fur babies I know. So far, each one of them love them & beg for more. My babies kept begging for them as them were baking. If your fur babies have a wheat allergy, there are many different flour substitutes you can use. My dogs highly recommend these!
Love it!
These are awesome! I made a batch for my 2 pups to taste test & they were a big hit. I have a dog boarding business so am going to make more to give to my customers for Christmas gifts 🙂
I made this receipt using a greyhound cookie cutter.Came out great.Dogs really loved them.
I absolutely love this recipe, I’ve even made some variations using this as my base. I was curious if you have a cat treat recipe, my cat is picky and I’ve made a few different recipes and none of them she likes. So I was curious if you had one for cats!
We do not at the moment. 🙁
My puppies are digging these treats! I made them with my Christmas cookie cutters and dog bones and paw prints. Too cute!
Awwwww – how cute!
Hi! Do you think I can opt out the pumpkin puree and only use peanut butter? Thanks!
What a great idea! But unfortunately, without having tried this myself, I cannot answer with certainty. But if you get a chance to try it, please let me know how it turns out! 🙂
These were perfect for Winnie! We made Christmas tree shapes, gingerbread shapes, oven mitt shapes, and lots of mini clovers. She loves them! I think they are a bit chewy for her taste and the prep time was more like 40 minutes but it was so worth it and lasted weeks in our little dog treat jar.
Thanks for sharing this healthy treat, I used sweet potatoes instead of pumpkin. I don’t buy anything canned for me so my baby can’t have canned either. They turned out fine (I tasted them [dont tell anyone], bland but ok) and Tanner kept begging. I’ll try the chia or flax seed next time. Again thanks.
I tried these last night. My dog likes them, but I wanted to decorate them like Christmas cookies and they got bubbles when they baked, not nice and flat like yours. Do you know why that would happen?
It’s hard to say as a few factors can be at play but here is a forum worth checking out regarding bubbles in cookies!
http://cookieconnection.juliausher.com/topic/air-bubbles-in-cookies
Hope that helps!
hello… you do have such lovely recipes, and i really do hate to rain on your parade here, i’m sorry… but i have to say – wheat, gluten, and grains are terrible for dogs… much healthier to use gluten free flours and ground seeds in homemade dog foods and treats (and crispier!)… eggs, on the other hand, are absolutely excellent for dogs! true, less shelf life, but just keep them in the fridge or freezer… i’m sure these are yummy, and yes healthier than most commercial brands, and i doff my hat to you for wanting to take better care of your furry friend, but please… no grains and gluten, and really, more eggs instead of less! i’m vegan myself, so i don’t eat eggs, but my puppy does (only good ones from happy chickens)
I made these a my dogs love them.
Next time I will double the recipe being I have 2 large, spoiled yellow labs
In your recipe for dog treats it calls for whole wheat flour. Can I substitute the whole wheat flour with oats? I really want to fix something special for my fur grand baby but I don’t want to have to spend a lot on food that will just lay around and eventually get thrown away, like wheat flour.
Thank you in advance.
What a great idea! But unfortunately, without having tried this myself, I cannot answer with certainty. As always, please use your best judgment when making substitutions and modifications.
Thank you.
How long do they last if refrigerated immediately?
These can be kept at room temperature for a few days but I recommend storing them in the fridge (or freezer) to extend shelf life. But methods for optimal food storage and shelf life should be based on good judgment and what you are personally comfortable with.
Ousted 2 1/2 cups flour and the dough seemed pliable without being sticky…..and baked for the full 25 minutes….they’re a beautiful color but seem like they could not be crunchy all the way through…..is this ok? Should I have used more flour? Baked them longer?
Totally fine, Peg! You can bake for longer for more crunchy treats! 🙂
Hello I am wondering the best way to store these?
I prefer to store these in an airtight container either in the fridge or freezer to extend shelf life.
I did exactly as you said and pup wont eat them. Sucks cause I made 2 batches……
Hi Heather! Thanks for trying my recipe but unfortunately, I cannot speak for your pup’s dietary preferences. Some pups can just be super picky!
How my will these last on the shelf?
Methods for optimal food storage and shelf life should be based on good judgment and what you are personally comfortable with. Hope that helps!
My Shitzu 7 yrs. old loves these! Made for her 7th B-day!
Best birthday ever! 🙂
Is whole wheat white flour okay for these biscuits
Unfortunately, without further recipe testing, we cannot answer with certainty. As always, please use your best judgment regarding substitutions and modifications. And in this case, always consult your vet if you are unsure.
My dog love it so much and we have a party coming up and these are perfect treats
That’s so cute!
I can’t wait to make these for my dog!
How long will they keep in airtight container
These can be kept at room temperature for a few days but I recommend storing them in the fridge (or freezer) to extend shelf life. But methods for optimal food storage and shelf life should be based on good judgment and what you are personally comfortable with.
Making my first batch in the oven right now and they smell so good, I know my friends dog will be in heaven since peanut butter is his favorite!!!
Aw, that’s great!
These were so easy to make and my dogs love them!! I used 2 cups whole wheat flour and 1 cup almond flour and they came out perfect. Something to note: I don’t have a stand mixer. We used a hand mixer until the batter got stiff, then worked in the dry ingredients by hand kneading. I was worried that the dough wouldn’t be the right consistancy but it worked fine.
Great improvising! So happy it came out great 🙂
I feel I did something wrong. I baked them and about 2 weeks later they became mold. DoI need to bake them longer???
Edy, these treats are not meant to last that long unless they have been placed in the refrigerator or freezer to extend shelf life.
More puppy treats,please
Noted!
Made these dog treats for my dog. She loved them. My problem is after a week the went moldy. how can I prevent that from happen in again ?
I prefer to store these in an airtight container either in the fridge or freezer to extend shelf life.
For the flour can I use all purpose flour ? I don’t have all wheat flour.
You can substitute all-purpose flour but it is not as healthy as whole wheat flour. I would also check with your pet’s veterinarian to check for any possible allergies.
I’m so excited to give these a try!! Thanks for the recipe!
My dog was used to milk bones, but we found out it has BHA so we made these. To make them crunchier we cooked it for an extra half hour at 300 flipped them half way through. She loves them!
Awesome Hope! Glad your pup likes them 🙂
My pup loves these treats. I keep some in the freezer too. I love making homemade treats so we know what ingredients are in them. Such a good recipe, thanks for sharing it.
Spoiling your pup is the best 🙂 thanks for sharing!
A couple of your recipes became the center of a birthday party for a VERY spoiled dog. Substituted 50/50 oats/whole meal for the whole meal in the biscuits.i also cut the peanut butter in the frosting on the pupcakes with an equal weight of sweet potato.
can i use regular all purpose flour?
You can substitute all-purpose flour but it is not as healthy as whole wheat flour. I would also check with your pet’s veterinarian to check for any possible allergies.
Do you use regular peanut butter or all natural or sugar free? I have regular on hand but wasn’t sure if I should use it or not because of the sugar. But I also want to make sure my little boy will eat them.
I prefer to use all natural peanut butter.
My Dogs love them!
this turned out very flaky once combined I mean I could not even work with it .I had to add tiny bit more pumpkin and peanut butter so it would even hold together. Baked for 20 minutes and let cool and my puppy would pick it up and then drop it leaving it where it lay. I tried one myself and noticed there was no flavor at all to the treat like it tasted like wheat but nothing else
I’ve read that crushed egg shells are good for dogs. Do you think using the whole entire egg (shells and all) in the recipe would work?
Unfortunately, without further recipe testing, I cannot answer with certainty. As always, please use your best judgment regarding substitutions and modifications.
I used two and a half cups of whole wheat flour and the dough was impossible to work with. I followed the recipe exactly. Any idea what I may have done wrong?
The recipe calls for 3 cups of whole wheat flour or more as needed. Maybe you didn’t use enough?
great recipe. I ‘decorated’ a little tree w/these-made holes in them before cooking and used them as ornaments for a couple of friends w/ dogs. was a great Christmas present. making them again today w/ a doberman cookie cutter for my neighbor who has three dobies. thanks
by the way, my husband tried them-thumbs up! ):
These were a big hit! I quadrupled the recipe and gave some to family for Christmas. They were really soft and great for the older dogs. Thanks!
Oh I loved this on so many levels. Got inspired by you to make treats for my Waffles. Do check it out if you have time.
Thanks much.

Hi
This recipe looks amazing. I want to make these for the dogs i walk. Do you have the conversion to grams at all please.
Jenny
Here is a great conversion chart you can use:
http://dish.allrecipes.com/cup-to-gram-conversions/.
Hope that helps!
Can I substitute yams purée? Also substitute oatmeal four for part of the flour? I have only 2 cups of flour and a can of yams.
Unfortunately, without further recipe testing, I cannot answer with certainty. As always, please use your best judgment regarding substitutions and modifications. Sorry, Lynette!
I did half oatmeal and half flour and it worked great!
Scaled to ONE 15 OZ can of pumpkin (making the adjusted recipe as I type):
1 ea 15 oz “100% pure pumpkin”
6 ea large eggs
2/3 cup peanut butter
7 cup rustic whole=wheat flour.
Follow the same instructions, BUT with this one difference: reserve about 1/2 cup of flour for the cutting board. Combine your wet ingredients in the electric mixer on low speed for a couple of minutes. It’ll look very creamy. Don’t over-do, tho. You don’t want to incorporate much air.
Then dump in 6-1/2 cups of rustic whole wheat flour. Turn mixer on lowest setting. At first it looks like a bowl of flour, then it gets clumpy, then the mixer starts to labor. After a couple minutes, it becomes a more solid mass.
Form into a LOG about 1 foot or so long. Cut into 8 pieces. Roll out 1 piece to 1/4″ thick (on a well flour-dusted board). Use your cutter to cut as you wish. Combine scraps, put in mixer, and another 1/8 log. Lock and mix. It’ll all combine into a lump. REPEAT (roll out on floured board, cut, gather scraps, toss in mixer, add another 1/8 log, and …)
I was able to use 100% of the dough, and it retained good roll-out consistency.

New to baking dog treats, I have a 14 yr old border collie and the harder treats are harder for her to chew up as her mouth gets sore. I do have a question about the flour, can you use regular all purpose flour or does it need to be wheat and why if so?
Yes, the recipe will certainly work with all-purpose flour but whole wheat flour is better due to its nutritional value.
The whole-wheat flour isn’t for nutrition, but FIBER. Improves the poor dog’s digestive tract’s ability to digest the stuff. And to get the inedible parts out the posterior. LOL
Question- I have made these several times (they have been quite the hit!), but each time I make them they have terrible bubbles. The dough is too thick for my mixer to completely mix so I end up having to do the rest by hand and I try to knead it as little as possible, but the bubbles persist. Do you have any recommendations on why this might be happening and what I can do to prevent it? Thanks so much in advance! 🙂
It’s hard to say as a few factors can be at play but here is a forum worth checking out regarding bubbles in cookies!

wow its so cool! I bought a cookie mold for dogs and made it! its really good.
I’ll add a link which I bought:

My coworker was chatting about having to run to town (35 miles away) to get her picky dog’s peanut butter treats. Since I was out if Snaps at home, I googled a pb recipe…voila! Yours popped up simple as can be. I doubled it and shared with everyone.
You are a hit with Minnie, as well as the waitresses’ picky dog too! My two and my grand-dog loved them. This is the forth day and I need more. Thank you!!
If I wan these to be a little chewy, how long should I bake them?
You can bake them for less time until the desired consistency is reached.
I made these and when I checked on them the next morning they were super soft kinda like tough play doh, nothing like the pictures 🙁 what did I do wrong?
What do you mean when you checked on them in the morning? How were they stored?
Love this recipe! But I’m getting bubbles in my cookies. I noticed you have them in yours, too. Is there any way to eliminate those?
It’s hard to say as a few factors can be at play but here is a forum worth checking out regarding bubbles in cookies!

Hope that helps!
If you are concerned about the shelf life, try Ina Garten’s Whole Wheat Dog Biscuit recipe. I have been making them for our Aussie for about 3 years and they keep fresh for 30 days in a sealed cookie tin. I think the pumpkin puree is what makes them perishable. This recipe does not have that ingredient. Check the link.

can u make these without pumpkin puree?
Unfortunately, without further recipe testing, I cannot answer with certainty. As always, please use your best judgment regarding substitutions and modifications.
I toasted stone oats blitzed them in my food processor to replace the flour, it adds a bit of a nutty flavor and my Bolognese and my Siberian husky went crazy for them. i have tried hundreds of biscuit recipes for them and the wouldn’t touch them yet they’ll eat just about anything like carrots squash lettuce cucumbers peas and they decimated my basil patch(we had to fence in our vegetable garden). So I have tried about every flour there is. The rest of your recipe remains about the same (except I added basil and thyme)
I’ve never had an issue with the shelf life, but after reading these comments I put in the fridge. Can you make the dough and freeze it like you would sugar cookies. I’ve refrigerated the dough for a couple of days prior to making them and it worked great, but wasn’t sure about freezing the dough in batches, do you think that would be ok?
Unfortunately, without further recipe testing, I cannot answer with certainty. As always, please use your best judgment regarding substitutions and modifications.
I doubled the recipe so that I could share these with our friends. I took it one step further though, I rubbed a very thin layer of the natural peanut butter onto the bottoms of the treats – just enough for it to soak in. I had two dogs underfoot for hours waiting to “taste test” these treats. There was one major lesson I learned. Do NOT use a 1″ bone-shaped cookie cutter! I had to cut out more than 400 of those darn things in order to use up all of the dough, bake them, cool them, and then put the peanut butter on the bottoms!!!
My dog loves these! But I am trying to get them to look like they do in your pictures. Mine keep puffing up in spots and cook so unevenly and bubbly (even when rolled and kneeded properly) is there a solution for this? I’ve tried 3 times!
It’s happened to me as well! I’ve found that the larger the treats are, the more it happens!
hello , the peanut butter I have is crunchy and sweet , should I use sugar free peanut butter instead ?
I recommend using an all-natural type of peanut butter.
I have attempted to make these a number of times only to have to tweek it greatly. I put the puree, peanut butter and eggs in the bowl, mix and slowly add flour……. I dont get close to 3 cups of flour before the ingredients refuse to mix. Giant disappointment, will move on to another recipe.
Maizy and Buddy say thank you. These cookies are now my go-to recipe. They are amazing and soft so my beagle can chew them easily!!!
I am making these right now with white flour (don’t use wheat) but I must say the videos with the music is annoying 🙁 I try to close them out and they just keep opening back up. Please fix this….
Are you being serious?? Just mute it…or

Hi,
I’ve been making a recipe inspired by yours for a month now and solved the shelf life issue. After baking them at 350F for 25 minutes, turn oven down to 170F and bake for another 2 hours. You’ll dehydrate the treats. Shelf life has lasted me longer than 3 weeks (which is when I ran out treats).
Our Airedale Terrier “Cheddar Pancakes” loves them. And yes that is her name. 🙂 – Jeff
Hi, your dog is so cute!!! may i know what’s the breed?
Awwwww, thanks. He’s a corgi!
WOW
Not too a difficult treat to create except for hand kneeling when making four times the amount when feeding my boarders at my boarding kennel for extra holiday treats providing I have clients approval.
In all the boarders love these home made treats as well as their owners who desire this recipe.
5 Stars.
Not too difficult a treat.
oops for my typo.
My grand-dogs love these treats. I make them every Christmas for them.
How many does it make?
This number will vary depending on the desired shapes and cookie cutters used.
Can use regular flour?
Yes, all-purpose flour can be used, but I recommend using whole wheat flour as it has more nutritional value.
Could you leave out the pumpkin? And maybe use apple sauce instead?
Unfortunately, without further recipe testing, I cannot answer with certainty. As always, please use your best judgment regarding substitutions and modifications.
Is there a substitute that can be used instead of Pumpkin Puree? Would unsweetened apple sauce work? Otherwise seems really easy and i’m sure my Pug will love this.
Unfortunately, without further recipe testing, I cannot answer with certainty. As always, please use your best judgment regarding substitutions and modifications.
My dogs have never begged for treats so much until I started making their treats myself! It’s crazy how much they love these. Or maybe not since most pups love pumpkin and peanut butter. I’ve made these with banana (1 large mashed) instead of pumpkin as well (I was out of treats, out of pumpkin and didn’t feel like making a trip to the store-I hate shopping 🙂 and they were a huge hit with my fur babies. They also love carrots as a snack so I’m wondering if puréed carrots wouldn’t also be a good sub for the pumpkin. Right not its not an issue since its autumn, but there are times when organic pumpkin purée is not readily available at the grocery.
On the pumpkin puree I only found pumpkin pure, is it the same thing? Also do I need the dog pumpkin puree or it doesn’t matter?
Pumpkin pure or pumpkin puree? Because I’ve never heard of pumpkin pure. I have also never seen dog pumpkin puree.
Idk I went to Walmart and it was In a Can and it said 100% pumpkin pure, and I googled dog pumpkin puree lol and I believe I remember stuff came up for it but it seemed expensive , would it even be in a can or what? I can send you a link to the pumpkin pure I got and maybe you can let me know lol https://buydepot.net/products/libbys-pumpkin-100-pure-15-oz?utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=googlepla&variant=29559739715
Yes, that works!
This is the most interesting thing ever! Thanks.
Hi!
I love the simplicity of these biscuits!
Do you think I couldmake this dough he day before, keep it in the fridge overnight and then roll and bake it the next day?
Yes, absolutely.
Sounds like a great recipe, but please make sure you DO NOT use “light” peanut butter, i.e., any peanut butter that contains the natural sweetener xylitol. Xylitol is poisonous to your pooch.
I’ve tried a few different recipes, all consisting of the same basic ingredients, peanut butter and pumpkin. But these were by far, the best. I had to use a mixture of whole wheat and white flour, but they turned out great and the dough was so easy to work with. A keeper for sure!
I can’t wait to try these. My dogs watch me all the time while I’m baking and are so disappointed when I don’t let them have any titbits! This would be a great way to let them join in!
My fur babies are very grateful for these beauties!!
I don’t have a electric stand mixer but a very old regular hand mixer with no paddle attachment. Would it be okay with the regular hand mixer?
Yes, absolutely.
Can I use can organic pumpkin instead of the purée? Thanks
Yes, absolutely.
Loved these treats, so easy to make and the dogs love them. I am ready to make my 3rd batch. I don’t have a cute dog bone cut out, so I just roll mine and slice them. I’ve never went over the shelf life, but if I had to I would put them in the freezer like I have to cookies that I’ve made in a big batch. Thanks for the recipe, simple, and good for the dogs. 🙂
can you use more peanut butter instead of pumpkin puree?
Yes, absolutely.
Those dog treats are so cute <3! I really need to try them 🙂 for my dogs. Also Your puppy is very adorable~! Thank you for sharing the recipe. It really helps me~!
Hi! May I check what peanut butter you use for the recipe?
I prefer to use organic, raw, unsalted peanut butter. Also, please be wary that peanut butter manufacturers are now adding xylitol to their ingredients.
This is the most interesting thing ever! Thanks.
Is this okay for puppies to have?
I have fed this to my pups but as always, please consult with your pet’s veterinarian and use personal judgment when applying this information to your own dog’s diet.
Think my dogs would love these but no chance of getting pumpkin puree here in Spain!
Sweet potato will work and is good for dogs
Can you freeze these?
Yes, absolutely.
Can you use crunchy peanut butter?
I have found that the consistency is best with smooth peanut butter but as always, please use your best judgment.
These were so easy to make for my pups. Thank you for the recipe!! My taste tester is asleep but I have a feeling she is going to love them!! I also love that they look exactly like your pictures.
can you use white flour?
Yes, the recipe will work with all-purpose flour but whole wheat flour has a little more nutritional value. But as always, please consult with your vet about any allergies your dog may have.
My dog wont eat them all. What can i addto it??
Unfortunately, I cannot answer with certainty as I am unsure of your dog’s preferences.
The first time I made these treats they went bad after about 4 days. My Emma loves them so much I tried again and this time when they finished cooking I turned the oven down to 170 degrees and let them dehydrate for two hours. They last much, much longer. I made batches for all of my friends that have dogs for Christmas. They love them and I shared your recipe with the dehydration temp and time added.
You did the dehydration in a conventional oven? Would this work for Chungah’s mint treats recipe?
I have a three year old husky who is super picky about the treats she likes – but these things… she loves them! And I love how easy they are to make. How long do the treats normally last for you before they start to go bad?
These can be kept at room temperature for a few days but I recommend storing them in the fridge (or freezer) to extend shelf life. But methods for optimal food storage and shelf life should be based on good judgment and what you are personally comfortable with.
I just made these using sweet potato instead of pumpkin and regular flour instead of whole wheat. That’s just what I had on hand. They turned out great and my dogs love them.
Oh my word! My son and I made these last night, and had so much fun. The dog is freaking out over these treats. After he ate the first one, he came right back over to us wagging his tail and jumping around until we gave him another. They were so easy to make, and he loves them.
Thank you so much for this recipe.
How long will they last in a refrigerator? How can I tell they’ve gone bad? Thanks in advance!
~Proud Aussie Owner

Love your human recipes. Can’t wait to try this for my Boston. Natural peanut butter is the only kind a dog should consume according to my vet so I will try that.
Funny because and please take a look the next time you go to the grocery store….Now alot of peanut butter are saying natural and when you look at the ingredients – it goes on and on. I choose the one that has “INGREDIENTS: Peanuts —- heeheehee
I can grind my own nut butters at my grocery so I know what’s in them.
JFYI, some manufacturers are starting to sweeten peanut butter with xylitol which is deadly to dogs.
My treats aren’t hard. Are they supposed to be like traditional biscuits or is this consistency good? They’re a little firmer than bread
If your pup prefers a chewier treat, I recommend decreasing the baking time to 10-15 minutes. If your pup prefers a more crunchier consistency, you can increase the baking time as needed.
I am making dog treats as a Christmas gift for all the dogs in my family. I made a “practice batch” tonight and let my two dogs sample them. I have a chocolate lab, who will eat anything, and of course he loved them. I also have a Shih tzu, who is pretty picky, and he also loved them! I don’t have a mixer and was able to mix everything by hand with no problem! I used a bone shaped cookie cutter and cooked them for 22 minutes. They were perfect! Now I’m ready to made a couple more batches for gifts! Thanks for the great, simple recipie!
Mine bubbled up and had air pockets 🙁 any ideas??
Often cookies like this will puff up if you use large cookie cutters. If that seems to fit your situation, poke them with a fork in a regular patern around every 1/4 inch or so – a bit like a saltine cracker, and that should do it. It’s called docking and is often recommended for larger rolled cookies and crackers.
Can they be frozen a stored? Thanks
Yes, they can be placed in the freezer to extend shelf life.
Can brewers yeast and fishing oil be added?
Unfortunately, without having tried this myself, I cannot answer with certainty. As always, please use your best judgment.
I made these but mine turned out rubbery. Any tips?
If your pup prefers a chewier treat, I recommend decreasing the baking time to 10-15 minutes. If your pup prefers a more crunchier consistency, you can increase the baking time as needed.
I used coconut flour, but the dough won’t roll, or stick together. It is crumbly. I can barely get a teaspoon full to stick together. Any ideas? I would appreciate any advice. My dogs have been watching me the whole time anxiusly. Can’t wait to let them try it!
Unfortunately, I do not have much experience using coconut flour. Can you try making this again with whole wheat flour?
I use only coconut flour but you have to add liquid to it to get it to form. I make my dog biscuits with pumpkin puree, peanut butter, eggs, kefir, honey and coconut oil. Coconut flour is extremely dry so the added moisture works great and all of the ingredients are great for any dog. I will even put a little apple cider vinegar in the mix for good measure.
I have been making my dogs biscuits now going on 4 years, and they love them. I use gluten free flour. They sit in the kitchen waiting for them to come out of the oven. It takes me about and hour to get them all done, they love love love them.
I have 2 Mini Dachshunds. 1 is highly allergic to beef, lamb & yeast. I have made them Peanut Butter treats for years. One ingredient that has been Vet approved for them is ground flax seed. It is healthy and good for them. I am anxious to try your recipe and will decrease the flour a little and add the flax seed. Can you tell me how long these can be safely stored?
Thanks you for sharing your recipe. I am sure my girls are going to love them.

Love the dog bone cutter. I used to cut biscuits for breakfast when my kids were small. They loved having “dog biscuits” for breakfast.
Just wondering if I can freeze the dough and thaw out when I want to bake fresh ones?
Couldn’t find it in the comments:)
Unfortunately, without having tried this myself, I cannot answer with certainty. Please use your best judgment.
Hi, I know this is a stupid question but what exactly is pumpkin puree? Do you have to make it from a pumpkin or is it the same as canned pumpkin ? Thanks!
Not a stupid question at all! You can use canned pumpkin puree (not to be confused with canned pumpkin pie filling).
I’m so glad you asked that! I have been reading all the comments trying to see if someone else asked!
Is there any substitutes for the Pumpkin Puree??
Ash, the pumpkin puree is one of the key ingredients in this recipe so I do not recommend any substitutes. But if substitutions must be made, please use your best judgment.
Thanks for the recipe! I am so excited to make these for my golden named, Max. I can’t wait to go out and get a bone cookie cutter……Max is gonna love these – I just know it! Thanks for the healthy recipe!
I had some leftover butternut squash, and it seemed to work out great. You can see what I did here:
http://heathershobbystop.blogspot.com/2015/07/to-dogs.html
I made a large batch, but I don’t see why they won’t freeze?
Yes, you can definitely freeze these to extend shelf life.
If a dog is being fed on raw meat, would these biscuits be alright for them?
This may be best answered by your veterinarian.
How come my cookies puff or bubble up?
I am not entirely sure – did you follow the recipe exactly as written without any substitutions? What size cookie cutters did you use?
Mine did too! I used AP flour, but other comments said that was fine. Otherwise nothing else was changed.
I was looking for a cookie recipe that I could ice with frosting, so they need to be flat 🙁
Hi, your dog is so cute!!! may i know what’s the breed?
Thank you! Both my pups are Pembroke Welsh Corgis.
can i use all purpose flour???
You can substitute all-purpose flour but it is not as healthy as whole wheat flour. I would also check with your pet’s veterinarian to check for any possible allergies.
I wonder if I could use Brown Rice Flour? I understand that it’s better for a dog’s digestive system. Thanks so much for sharing! I’m always looking for new doggie treat recipes.
Rice flour is a great alternative for dogs who are sensitive to wheat products. You can read more about the types of flour that can be used for dog biscuits here.
can i get away with not using the pumpkin puree? if so , how can i tweak the recipe?
Without further recipe testing, I cannot advise how to tweak the recipe by omitting such a key ingredient. Please use your best judgment.
I used baked butternut squash…. And white flour…. Mixed it with spatula and then by hand… And a shot glass as a cookie cutter. (Don’t use hand mixer; that will add a step you do not want to take.)
Watch the oven because they are easy to burn. Mine puffed up after ten minutes, and i pulled them out as soon as I was happy that the egg was probably cooked.
They were sort of chewy in the middle, and my very picky English Bulldog liked them. I think any squash veggie will do, just make sure it isn’t to wet (simply drain it).
Great and super easy recipe.
unsweetened applesauce would probably work well too. Just IMHO
I tried these using gluten free flour (Namaste Foods Perfect Flour Blend) and they turned out great. Just an fyi for those who were asking about alternatives to flour. No complicated measurements necessary, it measures the same as flour.
Thank you for the recipe. Can’t wait ti try it.
I have two dogs at home that wouldn’t eat store bought treats, so I tried to make these treats, and they couldn’t get enough of them!
Could I use 1 egg instead of two? What would happen?
The mixture may be too dry to roll out and to cut into shapes.
Can you refrigerate the dough if you don’t bake all the treats at once? I’m making these for a fundraiser and won’t be able to bake all the treats at one time, and will bake them over 2 days. Will the dough keep ok?
Unfortunately, I cannot answer this with certainty as I have not tried this myself. But you can also try halving the recipe and bake them in one sitting if that helps.
Is it possible to use a sweet potato puree instead of pumpkin?
Yes, absolutely! I have done the same when trying to mix things up for the pups 🙂
thanks, I need did this recipe because it is my dog’s birthday she is turning 5 years old. I thought it would be awesome if I could just give her something off the hook. So I invited lots of her friends to come to her party so that she could have the best birthday ever thanks again.
I made a double batch of these and used the large end of a cupcake icing tip to cut them for my two 8 lb dogs. I baked them for about 10 minutes and they were still a little chewy. I let them cool and bagged them up and put most of them in the freezer. I just pull out a bag for the week and it lasts the whole month! Great recipe! My boys love them!
Thanks!
can these cookies be frozen to prolong self life and approx. how many cookies does it make?
Yes, these can definitely be frozen. As for the amount of cookies, that’s really hard to say – it all depends on the size of the cookie cutters that you use.
Can I use almond flour? My 3 have Grain allergies.
Unfortunately, I cannot answer this with certainty without further recipe testing. Please use your best judgment.
I plan on making these and donating them to my local animal shelter. I hope that this will inspire you to double the recipe and donate them to good animals waiting for their furever homes.
I don’t have a stand mixer. What can I use in place?
You can try mixing it by hand, but it will take some elbow grease to do so!
Can I use white whole wheat flour? I have NEVER made dog treats, but really want to make these for my dog-sitting clients’ dogs!
Unfortunately, I have never tried using white whole wheat flour so I cannot answer with certainty if this will sit well with your dog-sitting clients’ dogs. It is best to consult a veterinarian regarding possible dog allergies and substitutions.
I just wanted to say that I used this recipe (I halved the recipe) and baked the biscuits in my Bow Wow Bistro dog treat maker. It worked very well. I baked the biscuits for 7 1/2 minutes. Thanks so much for the recipe!!!
Lol ok my dad makes some pretty good cookies was just wondering!!
I need an entree any suggestions?
Ethan, please feel free to browse through the recipe index for recipe inspiration: https://damndelicious.net/recipe-index/.
Thank you for the recipe. This was wonderful and I know that pumpkin puree is recommended for upset stomachs in dogs, especially if you are situated out of town and not near an animal clinic. I have used this myself for my own pooches. They really loved these cookies. I was a little strapped for time, so just rolled the mixture into a sausage and cut slices off and baked them.
My dog is not allergic to rice….so was wondering whether the rice flour (instead of wheat flour) would bake well ?
T, you can certainly try substituting rice flour but without further recipe testing, I cannot speak for how much this will change the overall taste/texture of the dish. Please use your best judgment to make the appropriate substitutions to fit your pet’s dietary restrictions.
Are these treats alright for people to eat? I have a school project and was going to make them if they were alright 🙂 Ty in advance for the reply!!! (because they sound really delicious!!!!)
Yes, they are people-friendly if that’s what you’re asking but this is really meant to be served to dogs as a treat.
Wow these look amazing! I know my dog will love them 🙂
Regarding allergies, I’ve made a similar recipe that called for rice flour, and my dog LOVED it. No tummy troubles at all.
I bet Butters absolutely loved these treats, too cute!
Super cute cookie cutters (and idea!). I was just wondering if you “have” to use wheat flour. It’s not something I typically have on hand. Would regular ol’ all purpose flour still give the same result or is that substitute not good for dogs? Any thoughts?
Thanks for the recipe!!
You can substitute all-purpose flour but it is not as healthy as whole wheat flour. I would also check with your pet’s veterinarian to check for any possible allergies.
Bob’s Red Mill has several kinds of gluten-free flours and it’s a good brand. Go to their website and ask your vet about the ingredients. And since the gluten-free flours’ ingredients include other flours such as garbanzo bean, you may need to jiggle the oven temp and/or take a few peeks as they bake, to see how long to leave them in the oven. And if it’s just a matter of not keeping WW flour because you yourself don ‘it like the earthy taste of WW flour, there is also WHITE whole wheat, which is milder but still nutritious. You and Butters can use the fiber. Whole wheat flour becomes slightly bitter if it gets old, and that’s what most people taste. If’ it’s fresh, it tastes sweet and earthy. WW flour spoils faster because it includes the germ. So refrigerate it in a tight jar if you don’t use it fast. You can also call King Arthur Flour for general questions about flour. Most chefs know KAF is the best, and they’ve always been able to answer my questions. Honestly, these dog biscuits sound like the best I’ve found online, easy and fast and healthy. I want a dog but don’t have one yet. I was going to make them for my vet, to give to the dogs that visit her. I didn’t know that dogs don’t taste sweet… Thanks for new information! I do know that canned pumpkin has about 25.000 I.U. of vitamin A per 1/2 cup serving, which is considerable. One gentleman here suggested adding sunflower oil for its vitamin E preservative property. One advantage of WW flour is that it has vitamin E in the germ, along with other vital nutrients, that unbleached AP flour removes. And if you use conventional peanut butter with added oil, the oil could have Vitamin E. Read the nutritional info that’s always on the back label. If it says hydrogenated, that’s not healthy, but it’s also the reason why commercial peanut butter doesn’t spoil as fast and stays homogenized.
By the way… Your fuzzy-butt little Corgi Butters is absolutely adorable! You are both very lucky!
<3 <3 <3
Well I was looking for some of your wonderful wonton recipes but then I saw this. Fun! I have thought about making our cats some treats but was worried it would be super complicated. The vet told us to try to feed the cats pumpkin. I bet a version of this could work. Thank you!
P.S. Butters is pretty darn cute!
My cat loves pumpkin! It’s supposed to provide finer.
So success with these treats! I made them last night and my Pomeranian was very anxious to eat them as soon as possible! I had to help the cooling process because he was so impatient. I was also worried about how it would go with his digestion and as of 24hrs things seem to be just great lololol
Pumkin is great for dogs digestion! My vet recommends it for digestive issues!
Butters is SO. DANG. CUTE!!!
I’m going to make these this weekend for my little old lady Corgi. She loves pb but is suspicious when I put some on a spoon for her because she thinks (ok she knows) I might smear some on her nose, which she hates. Hopefully she’ll enjoy this as much as we all enjoy your people recipes!!
I love these! Thank you for the recipe! This is a very amateur question, but I’ve seen those baking liners everywhere. Can you tell me the brand and/or style name to that? I’ve been searching but have been unsuccessful.
Not an amateur question at all! I am using a Silpat baking mat.
French Silpat, the original, is the best. It’s thicker. I did research online last year, and thicker is better… Also, some people complain that they stain. You could, instead, just use baking parchment, which you just toss when done. That’s what I use the most.
Just had to tell you how incredibly adorable your dog is! These look so yummy and my dog will LOVE them! 🙂 P.S. So nice to see you on the CA Milk tour.
I did a double take when this was my first email after signing up for your list. I am a pet photographer and all I could think was, “OMGosh, she’s in my head!” What a great start for a fun year. :O)
Great thing about these treats. If you run out of people treats, just steal some from your pet! Nothing in these that aren’t in cookies we fix for ourselves.
These sound great and I have some leftover pumpkin to use up. Perfect!
To increase shelf life, I’m going to freeze these between sheets of wax paper in a tupperware.
Misha. Every time I tried free I g with wax paper it sticks to the food. Yuck try plastic wrap or freezer wrap
Would these freeze well? Then I could store a few at a time at room temp?
Unfortunately, I cannot answer this with certainty as I have never tried freezing this myself – there were no leftovers left to freeze! Please use your best judgment for freezing.
Karen these treats will certainly freeze well or even remain in the fridge for a week or so…
They should freeze fine. I have made other doggie treats and since I always make big batches, I will vacuum pack them in smaller batches and freeze them. Works great!
I’m very interested in making these. Tell me how is the texture when they come out of the oven and cool off? Are they very hard like Milkbone treats or on the softer side? I ask because my older Pomeranian has sensitive gums and teeth because he has dental disease. If they do come out hard what would you recommend to make them a bit easier to chew on for my pooch?
They are certainly not as hard the Milkbone treats. If your pup prefers a chewier treat, I recommend decreasing the baking time to 10-15 minutes.
So adorable! My lil yorkie will most def appreciate you posting this recipe. And now I know what to do with all those cans of leftover pumpkin. Win!
Hi Chungah!
I can’t wait to make these for my Corgi’s. They will LOVE them! I already have a dog biscuit cookie cutter, so I’m all set to go :). i’m so happy that you posted this. Thank you!!
I am going to make these this weekend. I just ordered the cute cookie cutter on Amazon 🙂
What is the shelf life on the cookies?
These treats have a shelf life of around 3-5 days.
Made a big batch. Will they go bad after 5 days? She can’t eat all these biscuits in 5 days. I thought they would be good till gone.
You can store these treats in the refrigerator to extend shelf life. But as always, please use your best judgment.
To keep these treats fresh longer simply freeze them, and then defrost a few of them as needed. They should last at least 3 months in the freezer if not longer.
I made several batches for all my dog lovers and found they do have a short shelf life. ( I would guess 1 week). I wish I would have known this because I had to throw away a bunch because they got moldy. Please add to the body of the recipe so no one else encounters this issue.
Donna, the shelf life is discussed throughout the comments. But as always, methods for optimal food storage and shelf life should be based on good judgment and what you are personally comfortable with.
me too!
My dogs would LOVE this – thanks so much!
This is great! I am absolutely making these this weekend. Thank you!!
I have a bone cookie cutter but never used it! I guess I’ll be doing that this weekend 🙂 Awesome, easy recipe.
What a great idea and what a great blog you have!! The best part is I already have all the ingredients! Max (my dog) watches me make all sorts of healthy things every night, it will be nice to be able to make something and let it be all for him! Thanks, Chungah!
Any substitutes for whole wheat flour (for dogs allergic to wheat) ? Would rice flour work?
T, please consult with your vet about any allergies your dog may have and for any appropriate substitutes for your pet.
Why not take old-fashioned oatmeal and chop it in the blender to make an oatmeal flour?
I put oats in my food processor to make oat flour. Worked perfectly!
I’ve been toying with making my own dog cookies for a while now and this just looks so simple. How long do you think the cookies would stay good?
These can be kept at room temperature for a few days but I recommend storing them in the fridge (or freezer) to extend shelf life. But methods for optimal food storage and shelf life should be based on good judgment and what you are personally comfortable with.
You can also vacuum pack them and they will last even longer.
I don’t even roll & cut them! Just plop a spoonful on a (PAM sprayed) baking sheet (spread gently, for uniformity) bake n serve!!!!
Hehe I might use this short cut, I hate using a rolling pin, me and it never have quite gotten along lol.
I’m the same way but this dough is super easy to work with!
I’ve made these several times, but rather than using the eggs, I used 1/4 cup water and also added 3/4 tsp ground cinnamon.
Rolling out, I use a pizza cutter and bake on parchment paper. Super easy!
Thank you for the idea for removing the egg. Do you think with removing the egg, that would extend the shelf life of the cookie?
I vacuum pack them and they last for months then. After vacuum packing you can freeze them and they will last even longer.
No it’s the pumpkin that molds but egg (or applesauce) is what holds it together
As an egg substitute you can use flax or chia seed mixed with water. This will work as a binder like an egg would. Sorry I don’t remember the amounts.. Google it
It is 1-1 , 1 tsp. flax seed meal – 1 tsp. water. I use the flax seed meal, as I have not used the chia, but it would work the same.
I also used a pizza cutter on the rolled out dough. So I much easier than using cookie cutters and I can make real small treats for my little dogs.
Thanks Linda F. l am going to try it that way. Trying to put weight on my Great Pyrenees Mix.

I know this is quite an old post, but hopefully this will get bounced around. Will this dough do ok through a pampered chef squeeze handle cookie gun, with all of the different
shape circles?
Unfortunately, without trying the Pampered Chef cookie gun myself, I cannot answer with certainty. As always, please use your best judgment regarding substitutions and modifications.
How many calories in the small dog bones?
I try my very best to provide nutritional information for my recipes. However, if they are not available, it is best that you use free online resources at your discretion (you can gooogle “nutritional calculator”) to obtain such information. Also, nutritional information will vary depending on the size and thickness of the treats.
Thanks for posting this! I was using another peanut butter dog treat recipe that was so much more complicated. I can’t wait to make these for my fur babies!
Thank you for sharing this! I love the idea of baking something healthy and delicious for my pup!
These sound great for dogs! I remember making some wholemeal dog biscuits too for a dog I was looking after for the day, and he absolutely loved them! I even tried one myself just to see what they’d be like. And with easy ingredients that you use in your day-to-day life, s’all good 😀 Love the cookie cutters! x
How long are they good for once they are baked?
These can be kept at room temperature for a few days but I recommend storing them in the fridge (or freezer) to extend shelf life. But methods for optimal food storage and shelf life should be based on good judgment and what you are personally comfortable with.
Do they require refrigeration since you used the puree?
Ive recently been trying to make treats for my furbabies and a lot of the recipes ive seen say “refrigerate.” I know when you bake a cake even though you use eggs it doesn’t have to be so I’m curious. Thanks for the help.
They do not require refrigeration but placing them in the fridge will extend shelf life.
I put 10 bones in a mini ziplock and freeze the rest. I fill my bag as needed and nothing goes to waste. Our dog loves them fresh or thawed from the freezer.
What do you do with the left over pumpkin pure?
So many things! You can check out all my other pumpkin (human) recipes here. 🙂
I measured out 2/3 Cup pumpkin, put it in a ziplock bag and froze it. I’ll take it out and thaw it when I make the next batch!
Could you make this without peanut butter?
why so short of shelf life. shouldnt they last as long as cookies do?
No idea!
There is no added sugar. Sugar prolongs shelf life.
Sugar does prolong the shelf life but there is no point because dogs cannot taste sweetness and too much sugar is bad for dogs
The pumpkin puree especially will attract mold and will cause a short shelf life. This annoyed me. I’m not a cook, but I did some research and found that if I added a bit of oil with vitamin E (I chose sunflower oil), the shelf life will be extended a very long time. They last me months now. For this recipe, I added maybe three teaspoons of the sunflower oil. Apparently sunflower oil is also used as a common preservative. I found it listed on the ingredients of several “healthy” dog treats in the store. Hope this helps!
No preservatives
Can i use coconut oil in this recipe? I heard it is also goid for animals digestive system and hair.

I also used my bone cookie cutter to make sugar cookie cutouts for my veterinary. Big hit
Do these need to remain in the oven after baking for dehydrating or are they supposed to be a softer treat?
There’s no need to dehydrate. 🙂
Hi can I ask you a question can I use rice flour too
Thank

Love this, but I only used 2 cups flour – 3 would have been way too much!?
That’s absolutely fine – sometimes, I use 2.5 cups and other times I use 3.5 cups.
I’m a dude….. I have a long haired mini-wienie and an aussie. after 3 years of canine carryout and begin strips they started getting digestive problems, I researched it and found propylene glycol as an additive to these treats. I am a master diesel mechanic and I can tell you that is basically giving your dogs engine coolant in small doses, so I found this site researching healthy substitutes. I have not baked since jr. high 28 years ago, and this was a 15 minute job for me. Add a few cause I don’t keep track of measuring cups. I dont’ need them for the grill. The entire time I was mixing the dough I had eyes staring through me. They knew what was going on. These are their new treats! They absolutely went nuts over these. Thanks for the recipe. My pups thank you too.
How many treats can you make in one batch
It’s really hard to say – it all depends on the size of the cookie cutters that you use.
I have a 8 pound Maltese (Molly) and we make a treat she just loves. The treats are very easy to make. I take 2 sweet Potato, cut them in round slices, bake the round slices on a cookie sheet at a lower temp so they don’t burn.
around 250. Bake until they are crisp. These are better for your dog, last for a long time and they just love them. Easy to make, Molly just loves em. Give it a try.
Bruce Remington
Wow, great idea Bruce. I will try this as easy and healthy is very appealing to me!
How long do the sweet potato treats last?
Are these good for human consumption?
I made them, dog loved them, but definitely safe for people as well since it’s just peanut butter, flour, eggs and pumpkin puree. A bit bland(I was curious) but hey, my dog loves them!
