Keep your dog healthy and fit with this DIY homemade dog food recipe, made with ground turkey, rice, and fresh veggies. Budget-friendly, nutritious, and easy to make at home.

I never thought I would be one of those dog owners who made homemade human food for their pups. Not in a million years.

But when Butters recently fell sick with an upset stomach, our vet advised us to feed him a bland diet – chicken and rice without any kind of seasoning. So that’s what we did – we poached a chicken, shredded it in a food processor, and mixed in some white rice and fed him this bland diet for 3 days.

That’s when I started to do some research on homemade dog food, and I have been so amazed as to how many different kinds of vegetables dogs can have. And with the help of Balance IT, you can create so many different recipes for your pup!

Now the best part about making homemade dog food – just like making anything at home – is that you know exactly what is going into the dog bowl, and not any of that questionable gelatinous gunk from the canned food.
But it’s important to note that dogs have different nutrient requirements than humans for their proportional body size, such as:
- High-quality protein (meat, seafood, dairy or eggs)
- Fat (meat or oil)
- Carbohydrates (grains or vegetables)
- Calcium (dairy)
- Essential fatty acids (egg yolks or oatmeal)
Now this recipe here has a balance of 50% protein, 25% veggies and 25% grains, but the ratios can easily be adjusted to suit your pup’s breed and/or needs.

Once you’ve made your batch, you can divide them up into single servings, note the date, and freeze it. When ready to serve, you can defrost it in the fridge overnight and nuke it for 15-30 seconds. That’s it! Now who knew that making dog food would be this easy?

I made the recipe and of course the my dachshunds like it. It’s easy. Reading through the comments though, I muttered to myself, “sure glad I’m not a blogger…”
Have used this recipe and also your beef crockpot recipe and the dogs love them! Our goldendoodle is pretty picky, but eats these 2 recipes with gusto!
My vet has told me that peas are a “no” for dogs. All legumes are out. I substituted butternut squash.
What would the serving size be ?
Everyone should be feeding their furry babies like this! I fed my 3 furry babies human food that was also good for them almost their entire lives. My miniature Shar-pei lived to 14, my rescued pit bull (supposed adopted at 2 years old) to 14 years, and my shih tzu to 18 years. Wish I did it sooner for them, and wish I knew all that I know even now. How much better I could have made their lives. Thank you for making more people aware of how best to take care of their furry babies.
My dog Loves this recipe! So easy as well. I add 1 and 1/2 cups of red lentils and a sweet potato too x
I wonder what the calorie count is
Where is the serving amount per dogs weight?
I was just wondering the same. I thought I might find the answer in the comments. Hope she answers.
AFFCO recommends only 25% protein unless it is a working athletic dog or nursing mother. This much or will mess with their kidneys!
Please advise how much of your yummy dog food I should feed a 10 pound 18 month old Shihtzu-Maltese mix? She’s pretty active!
I need to know how much I feed a 5 lb 5-month-old chihuahua puppy.
I’m going to try this because my little Bella is a Chihuahua and she is so picky about her food
My question is about supplements, you don’t add any to this recipe?
Hi, what quantity do I feed my dog?
He only weighs 5kg
I would like to try this recipe for my 2 small mutts. Ones 5 1/2 lbs the other 7 lbd. The smaller one is old and highly allergic to soy among other things. This sounds much healthier. What amount would you recommend per dog per day? So I can bag it and freeze it. I don’t want the larger one to gain any more weight.
Thank you very much
Can I swap out the turkey for a fish product? My dogs are allergic to so many different proteins. If so, do you swap one to one? Right now my one Shih tzu seems to be fine with wild-caught herring, anchovies and sardines. Please let me know. Thank you!
My Labradoodle Teddy became very very fussy over his food & constantly changing his food to try to get him to eat was not doing him or my wallet any good. I saw a video for a homemade dog food & thought that it couldn’t hurt to try it since quite a few expensive subscription dog food companies are selling food very similar! Teddy is now looking forward to his food at mealtimes & seems like a generally happier dog which in turn makes me happy rather than worrying that he isn’t eating enough & that he’s going to get sick because of it!
Making his food means that I know exactly what is going into it so I know what he’s eating/ what he is sensitive to so we can avoid it, a lot of dog stuff has pumpkin in which gives Teddy a bad belly. His tummy seems a lot better since making his food.
Could you let me know how much your dog weighs and how much you fed were feeding your dog?
I have never made dogfood before, as I usually buy it from the pet shop. I didn’t quite have enough this morning, so I tried making your recipe. As my dogs are fussy, I thought they would probably turn up their noses because they don’t eat veggies much, as bought dog food doesn’t include a lot.
They LOVED it! They both polished off their bowls, then came back to the kitchen to see if their was more!
Could you let us know the weight of your dogs and how much you were feeding them each time?
This recipe is awesome! Loved how you kept it real and wholesome such a great blueprint for healthy homemade dog food.
This is fantastic so many delicious, healthy ingredients you’ve used for the pup! Really makes homemade dog food feel easy and nourishing.
How much of this would you feed a 85 pound boxer? How many times a day?
