Why you’ll love this watermelon slush
- Best way to beat the summer heat. Watermelon slush was just made for summer – it’s incredibly hydrating, ice cold, and takes minutes to blend – perfect for summer gatherings, bbqs, cookouts, and picnics!
- Requires minimal prep and ingredients. This comes together lightning fast in just 5 minutes. All you need to do is dice your watermelon, throw it in a blender with some ice and sugar, and press start. Easy peasy.
- Great way to repurpose overripe watermelon. Sometimes you pick a mealy, overripe watermelon, it happens. This is when the blender becomes your best friend. Once it’s blended, no one will even notice!
- So customizable. Throw in some mint, basil, lemon or lime juice, or a shot of vodka to make it boozy and adult-friendly.
What is a watermelon slush?
A watermelon slush (or slushie) is an icy summery drink made by blending watermelon, citrus, a sweetener, and ice. The consistency is semi-frozen, thick and smooth (lighter than a traditional smoothie).
How to make watermelon slushies
- Chop the watermelon. Dice the seedless watermelon to have 5 cups total. This is a great time to repurpose any mealy, overripe watermelons.
- Combine ingredients in the blender. Add the chopped watermelon, sugar, lime juice (plus any other add-ons – ex. handful of mint leaves or a shot of alcohol), and 1 cup ice to a blender.
- Blend. Blend in bursts to start breaking down the ice before blending on high for 30-60 seconds until thick and frosty. Add more ice, as needed, until the desired consistency is reached.
- Serve. Pour into a glass, add garnishes (mint sprig and lime wedge pictured here), and serve ice cold to beat the heat (and to stay well-hydrated!).
Slushie variations

Notes
- Use a seedless watermelon. No one wants to pick out those black seeds by hand! Be sure to use a seedless watermelon to ensure a smooth, frosty consistency.
- Mix it up. Swap out the lime for lemon juice or ginger for a zesty kick of flavor, or add a handful of fresh mint or basil.
- Make it boozy for grown-ups. Add a shot of vodka, rum or tequila for an adult-twist.
- Add some bubbles. Finish each glass with sparkling water or club soda for a fizzy finish.
- Elevate your slushie. Add a simple garnish such as a mint sprig and a lime wedge, making it bar-quality!
- Try watermelon ice cubes. To keep the flavor 100% purely watermelon, blend and freeze watermelon juice into ice cubes beforehand, using the watermelon ice instead of plain ice cubes.

Watermelon slush and pineapple/Watermelon so good and very refreshing
Delicious! So refreshing!! Adding lime was such a nice touch!
Turned out more like watermelon juice, but still really tasty. Super refreshing and perfect for sunny days!
Maybe add more ice to make it slushy.
It was really good. Really refreshing
I love to use fresh mint with watermelon… also watermelon freezes well and then there is no need for ice!! My favorite mo tail!
I left the sugar out and it was delicious and refreshing!
Beautiful!
Holy s**t amazing best drink ever
Where did you get the glasses you served it in?
I purchased these from a discount store many many years ago! 🙂
add coconut rum.
Used coconut rum in these at a BBQ today and it was perfect! It compliments the watermelon very nicely. Decided I will throw in some mint or basil next time.
I absolutely love this recipe. If you want to cut out the added sugar, just add some strawberries for an extra kick of sweet
Even better with a little simple syrup, lemon juice, a bunch of mint and a splash of Amaretto.
This is the basic recipe I use for watermelon (or cantaloupe) juice. Half water, half cut up melon and some sugar (to your taste, I love agave) and blend it up then sit in a mesh strainer. You’ll get some pulp in there but trust me it is delicious.
Love your site.
