reasons to make pf chang’s chicken lettuce wraps
- Lightning fast recipe
- Budget-friendly
- Copycat favorite
- Healthy and low-carb yet so filling
- Can easily be doubled or tripled
- Freezes and reheats very well
Ingredients
Ground chicken
Ground chicken is a great economical, quick cooking option. Ground turkey, pork or beef (extra lean) can also be used.
Garlic
We love subbing in garlic puree, one of our favorite meal prep hacks to cut down on prep time even more.
Onion
Yellow, sweet or white onion will all work well here.
Hoisin
A key ingredient, the hoisin adds a complementary sweet, savory and tangy flavor to the filling.
Soy sauce
Tamari and coconut aminos can be used for gluten-free options.
Rice wine vinegar
Rice vinegar and rice wine vinegar are the same, and are used interchangeably.
Ginger
Similar to the garlic, we love subbing in ginger puree in a pinch.
Sriracha
For a little bit of heat! Chili garlic paste is also a great sub.
Water chestnuts
This helps bulk up the filling, and adds a nice little crunch.
Butter lettuce
Sturdy lettuce such as Bib or butter lettuce are both great options.
tips and tricks for success
- Use your favorite protein. This recipe will work well with quick-cooking ground chicken or ground turkey. Finely diced chicken breasts or chicken thighs can also be used.
- Use reduced sodium soy sauce. Reduced sodium has less sodium and less salt without compromising flavor.
- Make it mild. Need something a little more mild for the littles at home? Skip the Sriracha altogether.
- Sturdy leaves are best. Use Bibb or butter lettuce – both are ideal for wrapping as they have wide, pliable and sturdy leaves without falling apart when filled.
- Freeze leftovers. The filling is very freezer-friendly. Portion the leftover filling into plastic freezer bags in individual servings, squeezing out any excess air before sealing. Label, date and freeze up to 3 months.

PF Chang’s Chicken Lettuce Wraps: Frequently Asked Questions
Bib or butter lettuce are both great choices – strong and sturdy that can hold up filling without breaking apart. Romaine lettuce is also a great option for a crisper wrap.
The optional Sriracha adds a little bit of heat but can be skipped altogether without compromising flavor.
Use gluten-free hoisin sauce, and swap the soy sauce for tamari or coconut aminos. Rice wine vinegar is generally gluten-free such as Marukan Rice Vinegar.
Leftover filling can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days, adding a splash of chicken broth when reheating (if needed). Store leftover lettuce separately in an airtight container or Ziploc bag to prevent sogginess and wilting.
Yes! Let the filling cool completely and portion into plastic freezer bags. To reheat, thaw overnight in the fridge, reheating over low heat, stirring occasionally, until heated through.

What if you have ground Turkey available in freezer? Is it still worth getting ground chicken?
Sometimes, these small changes in a recipe really make the taste change.
Yes, ground turkey would be great in this recipe!
I’ve made it with ground turkey a few times and couldn’t tell the difference.
This is also great on riced cauliflower if you want to turn it into a main dish
I have been on a pizza kick for awhile now and am always looking for creative new pies. I made this and put it on a Boboli Pizza Cruist and it is absolutely amazing! Best pizza I have ever had! I added a light layer of Italian 5-blend shredded cheese. No need for sauce, and, of course, you omit the lettuce. Thank you sharing your taste here 🙂
Very creative! Thanks for sharing.
I made this for dinner!! Omg amazing thank you thank you for the recipie! I used ground turkey and it was awesome sauce keep the recipes coming
Love it Carol! We will!
These were so bomb! Wish i had more! Took me like 5 mins to scroll down to the bottom of your page to comment though. Wish commenting was a little more easier though.
Thanks for taking the time to comment!
GROW UP PEOPLE!! Chungah, perhaps it time to remind people to keep their comments about the recipes? I always browse the comments to get a feel for how the recipe was received, the reason they’re there, right? I saw pages and pages of people’s outrageous comments belittling each other and being rude and inconsiderate to each other. Such bad behavior has no place on a recipe website.
Too much Sriracha! Cut to half. Other than that, perfection.
I made this last night. Very yummy. My BF went back for seconds. Thank you for a great recipe. I will make this again.
Oh that’s awesome! Seconds are the best 🙂
This is a super reciple. The taste is wonderful!! Everyone in the family loves it so much I always double it so we have leftovers. I don’t change anything. My husband and grandson like it a little heartier so I serve it over steamed rice for them!! My daughter is gluten free so I have to find gluten free hoisin sauce and tamari sauce instead of soy sauce. If you can’t find gluten free hoisin sauce in the supermarket you can make a gluten free version found on the internet.
Thank you for sharing your experience Liz! So happy to hear this turned out great for you and your fam.
Winner! I’ve made this several times sans sriracha (not my spice style) and I really love it. It is quick; it is easy; it is delicious. This recipe is now saved with my favorites.aria.
How much is one serving? I see it serves four. I make this all the time. I double everything aside from the onion and the Waterbury chestnuts and I add a bit more serachia and hoisin saise. Love it! NEED serving size though.
Kyndra, it’s really difficult to answer how many wraps is equivalent to a single serving especially because some people tend to fill their wraps up more so than others! It may be helpful to divide the mixture into 4 equal servings to serve 4. Hope that helps!
Ok, so I fall into the category of people who make food but rarely comment. This was FANTASTIC!!! It took next to no time to cook, essentially costs butter lettuce and chicken so a solid $5 dolla in my life, and tasted sooooo good. In all the “quick dinner” meals I’ve made this takes the cake. Seriously about the same effort and time as cooking pasta and sauce, but way better. Thank you so much!
Oh.my.god! This is seriously some mouthwatering stuff, need to try this!
This is a HIT with my teens … and me!!!
Very tasty! I don’t find it necessary to use olive oil when browning ground chicken breast, more calories saved. Served on lettuce as shown and with rice/cauliflower. Could also envision topping with chopped peanuts. Thanks so much for the recipe!
I admit I butchered the recipe because I was just using what I had on hand, so if anyone is wondering, gochujang can be used in place of hoisin, mirin and a squeeze of lime can be used in place of rice vinegar and ground chicken can be used instead of chicken breasts. I also added sesame oil for some oomph and a little peanut powder to thicken the whole thing a little bit. Definitely came out with a little bit of a different flavor profile than PF Chang’s but still really similar and so damn delicious! I made this as directed and then put it in a slow cooker to serve at a potluck. It was a hit and every bit was finished by the time I went home. I did not make the special sauce to go with it.
Wow!!! These are so easy and delicious!!! And this comes from someone who doesn’t enjoy cooking very much. It smelled so heavenly, I was thrilled to be cooking It! Thank you so much for posting!! Looking forward to trying other recipes of yours!
Absolutely loved these lettuce wraps – but found the majority of the unnecessary comments distasteful.
Loved it.. can you please post the receipe for the sauce that goes with lettuce wraps?
I do not have that recipe at this time. Sorry!
I was going to explain why my family loved this recipe, but after reading the comments from all the trolls on this site I think this will be my first and last comment. What a shame.
