Bacon Dog Treats
These dog treats are filled with bacon goodness and nutritious oats, and your pup is sure to go crazy for these!
I had a lot of bacon left after using only two slices for recipe testing. I figured I’d put them to good use in these dog treats for Butters and Ollie – that is, after Jason voiced his concerns that I should save the leftover bacon for his breakfast needs rather than serving them up to the dogs.
Even so, the dogs ended up getting the bacon, and boy were they in for a treat.
Now there’s actually only two slices of bacon here. The majority of the bacon actually comes from the fat – good old greasy bacon fat. That and whole wheat flour, old fashioned oats and pumpkin.
From there you can cut into your desired shapes. I used these personalized bones from Etsy, which just makes dog treats that much more fun to make.
I should also mention that Butters and Ollie not only enjoyed these but they both felt the need to eat these under the couch in complete darkness and privacy. Yes, I guess it’s just that good.
Bacon Dog Treats
Ingredients
- 2 slices bacon, diced
- 1 cup pumpkin puree
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup old fashioned oats
- 3 cups whole wheat flour, or more, as needed
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat; set aside.
- Heat a large skillet over medium high heat. Add bacon and cook until brown and crispy, about 6-8 minutes; set aside, reserving excess fat.
- In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat pumpkin puree, eggs and bacon fat on medium-high until well combined, about 1-2 minutes. Gradually add old fashioned oats and 2 1/2 cups flour at low speed, beating just until incorporated. Add an additional 1/4 cup flour at a time just until the dough is no longer sticky. Add bacon, beating just until incorporated.
- Working on a lightly floured surface, knead the dough 3-4 times until it comes together. Using a rolling pin, roll the dough to 1/4-inch thickness. Using cookie cutters, cut out desired shapes and place onto the prepared baking sheet.
- Place into oven and bake until the edges are golden brown, about 20-25 minutes.*
- Let cool completely.

style=”text-align: center;”>Bacon can be consumed as an occasional treat in small amounts, but please keep in mind that feeding any new food, especially in large amounts, can give your pup indigestion. Please consult with your pet’s veterinarian regarding possible allergies your dog may have.
Thanks, these dog treats look so delicious!
Wonderful recipe! Thank you. Easy to make. Dough is great to work with.
My dog and friend’s dogs love them. Everyone wants the recipe.
What do you do with the reserved bacon grease? Does any of it go in the biscuit mix, if so how much?
It goes in with the pumpkin and eggs when you mix them
How and for how long storage.
What can I replace with pumpkin puree?
Hi I like your recipe with one exception (the oats) as a Canine Socializer and worked in a shelter or dog rescue as well as worked in the clinic I know some breeds suffer bloating and to much oats can bother them. Can you suggest an alternative to the oats?
My dogs absolutely love these, I have an 18 year old that wants them instead of his regular food, which includes chicken, real chicken. All 3 of our dogs love them, so easy & reasonable compared to what we buy at the store for them & it’s expensive. Thanks, will make more as son as needed.
My dog LOVED these. He gobbled them right up!
Whole wheat flour is no good for dogs
Our dogs love these only thing I do different is placing them back in the oven ince cooled down to 170 deg for 3 to for hours as mould would grow on them quickly is covered. After drying them out a bit they still remained pliable.
How long do the treats last for? 7 days? Do they need to be refrigerated?
These should keep for at least a few days (I like to store these in the fridge or freezer to extend shelf life) but methods for optimal food storage and shelf life should be based on good judgment and what you are personally comfortable with. Hope that helps, Cindy!
My puppy friends loved their treats. Great recipe and easy to make.
How long would these keep in the freezer?
As I am not an expert on food safety, I cannot really say with certainty – sorry! Methods for optimal food storage and shelf life should be based on good judgment and what you are personally comfortable with. Hope that helps, Bri!
I JUST made these as a for Coco!
She loved them!! I did’t have coconut oil so I added peanut butter and a bit of olive oil. Btw, my teen daughter loved them too!
I’ve made several of your terrific recipes, but am just now finding these dog treats! Lol, it’s awesome that you’ve included these!
Wow! I can’t believe how much my dogs LOVE these treats! I think I’ve created monsters! My dogs are rescue dogs, they were abused and neglected. Any kind of special attention or affection means the world to them and these treats absolutely put them over the moon! Thank you so much for helping me show them that they’re loved and that not all humans are cruel.
Where do we stored them? Fridge or room temperature ?
Either!
Im baking some now for my dog. Can you freeze the dough? How long is the dough good for?
What a great idea! But unfortunately, without having tried this ourselves, we cannot answer with certainty. But if you get a chance to try it, please let us know how it turns out! 🙂
I love all your puppy recipes, although I am partial because we have a tri-color corgi too 🙂
How do you store them? How long do they last?
I made these Sunday, today is wednesday. I had them in a zip lock bag but some look like there is white flour on them. I figured it must be some kind of mold and tossed them. Should I have refrigerated?
Thank you
They will last for a few days at room temperature in an airtight container but they can also be placed in the fridge or freezer to extend shelf life. But as always, please use your best judgment.
I just wanted to add, I love that you have dog food on your site! I have been making my westies their own treats for a long time now and it has helped their health so much, they are prone to a lot of skin conditions and I have found that brown rice flour vs whole grain or regular flour has worked wonders for their skin!
