Slow Cooker Sweet Potato Casserole
That ooey gooey marshmallow topping!!!! All made in a crockpot. So easy without taking any oven space. Double win!
Thanksgiving is in T-minus 48 hours.
Ummmmm, so how did we get here so quickly?
I thought we had another week or so.
And I’m not a last minute planner. At all.
I make lists.
Lots of them.
Months in advance, really.
Except this Thanksgiving really crept up on me.
Thank goodness I have this slow cooker though.
Between the scalloped potatoes and creamed spinach, I may not have to use the oven at all.
Plus, the marshmallows.
You always need marshmallows for Thanksgiving.
There’s no argument here.
You just do.
Now they will melt beautifully in the slow cooker from the residual heat.
You know. I always love to pop this under a broiler for color.
Or a blow torch.

This recipe is so amazing! We’ve made it 5 times now and it’s always a perfect winner. We usually use the slow cook feature of our insta-pot to make this one. The insta-pot is not our best slow cooker and can be a little finnicky but that’s a testament to the perfection of this recipe. Even a difficult slow cooker makes this one easy.
I am always trying to find really good recipes for the slow cooker and on holidays this makes our kitchen workflow so much easier – combine and forget it and enjoy the day. 🙂 My mom always used candied yams when I was growing up but as an adult now I really can’t go back to canned potatoes. My whole family raves about how excellent these turn out.
Thanks for such an easy delicious recipe!
Can you use canned sweet potatoes and many make 4 pounds? Also how long to cook this?
So I don’t have to put any additional liquid in the crockpot? I know some recipes with certain things you don’t have to but I get so scare but I really want to try this version!
Everyone loved this recipe! I am so happy I came across this blog! I slow-cooked my sweet potatoes for 8 hours and, in the end, decided to broil it in the oven with marshmallows and walnuts for 5 minutes. Thank you so much for this recipe.
this ones a keeper. I made this for Thanksgiving. I used a whole stick of butter because a half didnt seem like enough and little more brown sugar, kept everything else the same. Got many compliments and its just so easy you can’t beat this for taste and if you use a crock pot liner the cleanup ease alone is enough to make this this was to go when having this side dish. absolutely is going to be a staple for our thanksgivings to come. THANK YOU
Would this recipe work in a 6 qt slow cooker, as written, or would that require doubling the ingredients?
Looks delicious. Have you doubled this recipe? If so would you just cook longer???
This was my choice recipe after searching for one I wanted to try. I just finished preparing it and crockpot hot. Looking forward to eating it with my family this evening. Thank you!
I am making this either tonight or tomorrow for thanksgiving for family. I am also adding pecans before the marshmallows. Just another idea for you guys as well.
This would be the perfect side dish to make for thanksgiving. Its a warm dish so it would be good for that warm fall feeling. I would like to make this for freinds and family!
Could I make this is the crockpot for the most part but then transfer into a baking dish and top with marshmallows to get that toasty color?
Should I adjust anything if I’m using canned (yams) sweet potatoes?
What a great idea! But unfortunately, without having tried this myself, I cannot answer with certainty. As always, please use your best judgment when making substitutions and modifications.
I don’t normally write reviews but this was such a hit at my work’s Thanksgiving potluck today! I added some pecans and substituted the all spice with pumpkin pie seasoning as I didn’t have all spice and it was delicious. It was wiped out as people went back for seconds. I had a few coworkers come ask me for the recipe too. I will definitely be making these for my own Thanksgiving dinner. The best part is it’s quick and easy and who doesn’t love the crock pot?
So great! Thank you so much for sharing!
Looks perfect for my work Thanksgiving potluck, to make fresh there. However, there’s some steps with the potatoes that are left out. For a first-timer, I need everything.
Do I peel, cube, boiled, or do anything to the potatoes beforehand?
Do I mash them when they’re done? Help.
Stephanie, the potatoes should be peeled and diced (this is indicated in the ingredient list: 4 pounds sweet potatoes, peeled and diced). The potatoes do not have to be mashed, unless that is what you prefer.
Boil them first or put them in raw and diced and peeled?
Raw -the slow cooker will cook them and make them soft.
Made this for thanksgiving and it was awesome! Going to make it tomorrow for Christmas. Thanks for sharing!!!!
Hi.. I am making this right now. How did you get marshmallows toasted?
You can pop this in the broiler for 1-2 minutes until lightly browned or a creme brûlée torch will also work! 🙂
This is a question- the picture shows the tops of the marshmallows toasted did you use a flambé torch at the end?
Do you think this recipe could be doubled in a larger (6 qt) crockpot?
Yes, but cooking time will have to be adjusted as needed.
What’s the serving size for this recipe?
About 1/2-1 cup per serving.
Are you supposed to boil the sweet potatoes first?
No, the potatoes are cooked in the slow cooker.
Can I mash the sweet potatoes or do you recommend just dicing?
I recommend dicing to begin with – but you can choose to mash the potatoes once they are cooked!
I would like to leave off the marshmallows. Any problem with that?
Not at all!
This looks so good and I’m really loving all the slow cooker recipes. Happy Thanksgiving to you
Happy Thanksgiving to you This looks so good and I’m really loving all the slow cooker recipes.
YUM!!! I made the potatoes the night before and then set them on warm today. I won’t lie – the butter/brown sugar/spice mixture was so good. I bet it would make a great crumble topping for some type of fall dessert. I had to add a little bit more butter and some salt as well this morning because the potatoes dried out a little overnight. Otherwise, this was a HUGE hit. I did transfer the potatoes to a Pyrex and let the marshmallows broil. Perfect. Thanks so much for an easy and delicious recipe!
Can this be made the day before and then just put on warm to heat up?
Made this today, not in the crock pot. Delicious and easy. Thank you for sharing!
Making this right now – thanks for the recipe! Not sure I will remember to come back when I’m fat and happy from Thanksgiving, but I’m sure its perfect (smells like it at least). 🙂 <3
Can you put the ceramic crock under the broiler to brown the marshmallows?
Please refer to your owner’s manual for specific crockery cooking medium tolerances.
This looks so good and I’m really loving all the slow cooker recipes. Happy Thanksgiving to you 🙂
Yum! Happy Thanksgiving!
What about using canned sweet potatoes? How much time reduction is needed?
Unfortunately, without further recipe testing, I cannot answer with certainty. As always, please use your best judgment regarding substitutions and modifications.
This is a perfect dessert! I love sweet potatoes, and often made mashed sweet potatoes. I have to try this next!
I want to throw this bad boy in the oven instead of a slow cooker. What would the oven temp. and duration be for this recipe instead?
You can try this recipe instead!
It would be nice to have this without the marshmallows, for us VeggieHeads. I’ve tried the vegan ones from the vegan store online, but they are either sold out, or really stale.
Any suggestions? I love, love Thanksgiving dinner, but it’s challenging to find delicious substitutes for some things…
Have you tried Dandies Marshmallows? I have found them at Target
With Thanksgiving around the corner, this is a perfect dessert! I love sweet potatoes, and often made mashed sweet potatoes. I have to try this next!
