Almond Butter Granola
There is nothing better than homemade granola! It’s quick/easy to make, it’s cheaper and it’s so much tastier! You can’t beat that!
So I’ve been kind of hoarding all of the Trader Joe’s almond butter granola lately. I’ll buy 5 bags at a time, and then eat a bag a day. It’s not cute.
Now if you haven’t had a chance to try it, their granola is seriously to die for, with so many clusters of granola! I’m a big cluster fan, and Ben is under strict orders to save all of the clusters for me.
That’s true love right there.
No, but really, in an attempt to save some of my Trader Joe’s granola allowance, I have been testing and retesting this recipe for the last month.
And after 17 failed attempts, here it is.
A perfected copycat recipe made even better – made with less sugar, more almonds, and best of all, more clusters!
The key is to let this cool completely (about 45 minutes) without any kind of touching, stirring, or snacking.
I won’t lie. It will be very difficult to do so as the smells of the granola permeate the entire house. But try to leave home so you won’t be tempted in any way. It’s worth the wait – PROMISE!
Almond Butter Granola
Ingredients
- 3 cups old fashioned oats
- 1 cup raw almonds
- ⅓ cup shredded coconut
- ¾ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt
- ⅓ cup creamy almond butter
- ⅓ cup honey
- 6 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 300 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, combine oats, almonds, coconut, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt; set aside.
- In a medium saucepan over low heat, combine almond butter, honey and butter until smooth, about 3 minutes. Remove from heat; stir in vanilla. Pour mixture over the oats mixture and stir using a rubber spatula just until moist.
- Spread mixture in an even layer onto the prepared baking sheet. Place into oven and bake for 35 minutes until golden brown, stirring the mixture halfway through baking.
- Let cool completely without stirring, about 45 minutes, before serving or storing in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.

This recipe is absolutely outstanding! The perfect balance of ingredients and it ships well too. Thanks for sharing!
I made a double batch of this recipe. I rounded the coconut up to one cup and the honey to one cup since that was the only sweetner. I cooked it a tad longer because the pan was full and I wanted to make sure it would harden. Recipe success! Hubs totally loves it, said it was restaurant quality. That’s a term we use for something we would buy out somewhere. I do wonder what coconut oil would do for this. Thoughts? This is a keeper!
Did you use regular almond butter, unsweetened almond butter? There are so many variations.
A++++++++
I use this recipe on the regular for my fam. I usually made a triple batch. The recipe is perfect for creating variations. I have made this with all types of nuts, maple syrup instead of honey, adding chia and hemp hearts, peanut butter instead of almond butter, and even will do part coconut oil and part butter, if I’m running low on butter.
My fam is obsessed, and I buy the ingredients in bulk because it can get expensive. With that being said, I feel like it’s a nutrient dense granola recipe vs the other ones I have seen who use too much oil and sugar!
Keep doing your thing! It’s great!
I just made this granola and it tastes just as good as the Trader Joe’s Almond Butter Granola! I just couldn’t bring myself to pay for another bag at $3.99 for 5 servings. My internet search brought me to your recipe and I will definitely be making my own from now on. Thank you!!!
Can you please tell me if the coconut is sweetened or unsweetened? Thanks so much!
I did this with unsweetened coconut with great success!
This was amazing. I added chia seeds, flax seeds, and I used lightly salted roasted almonds. AMAZING!! I have to make this every week now. Thank you for this recipe!
I’m in love with Trader Joe’s almond butter granola, but I’m not shopping there right now since they don’t do grocery pickup. Unfortunately, this recipe was a bit of a miss for me. I followed the recipe exactly except I omitted the coconut, and the granola really just tasted like honey. My husband tried it without knowing what it was supposed to be, and he thought it was honey granola as well. Good if that’s what you’re going for, but it didn’t taste like the Trader Joe’s version. I’d also advise people to double-check cook times. I have an oven thermometer, so my temp was fine but it was done cooking by 25 minutes. In fact, the edges were a little too toasty by then. Honey granola fans? This one is for you. Crunchy and flavorful. I’m back to my hunt for a Trader Joe’s replacement though!
Its damn delicious!! Made it with almond and peanut butter and it lasted a whole 3 days….because we couldn’t stop eating it! Will make again
I started searching for a recipe to replace my beloved granola from Trader Joes when news reports came out about the weed killer Glyphosate being found in oats!!!! I wanted to be able to use organic oats. I tried several but this is the best! Delicious! I’m feeling a little guilty about the butter and I’m going to try replacing half of it with olive oil. I have a feeling I may loose the clumps based on others experiences. Thanks for the best recipe!
Yes, Trader Joe’s almond butter granola is the gateway drug, & this handcrafted version is even better! I am still tinkering with substitutions (we’re not eating butter – egads – so I tried it with ‘earth balance’ — good! and also made it a second time with canola oil: a bit meh…) – plus substituted maple syrup instead of honey to make it full-on vegan… super tasty, but in all iterations, I lost the clumps somehow. I will keep trying. Anyway, great base recipe: thanks a million 🙂
Yes! I, too, go crazy for the Trader Joe’s almond butter granola. I just randomly searched to see if there was a recipe to make at home. You’ve hit it out of the park! I was finding that more than half the TJ’s bag was finely crumbled and I like the chunks, too. This is tastier, seems fresher and less processed than theirs. Thank you for taking the time to perfect your recipe. I will be making this from now on. And, yes, let it sit the full 45 minutes for nice clumps ;). Also, I’m not a fan of coconut either but you can’t even detect it is there
That is such a huge compliment, MaryBeth! We are all completely obsessed with this recipe and are so happy you’re joining the club! 🙂
Delicious as usual! I am not a fan of coconut (taste or texture) so I subbed 1/3 cup slivered almonds and 1 tablespoon of flax seeds. Turned out great! Good clusters and flavor!
We love hearing that, Carly! Great substitutions! 🙂
I am not a fan of coconut either, but, I went with it and it’s not detectable. I like your substitution ideas and may give it a try next time. Thank you!
I substituted the butter for 4 Tbsps grapeseed oil, chopped raw almonds, no coconut, and baked at a little lower temp 285 for a few more mins came out perfectly glazed sweet and nutty. Also, I add about a 1/2 tsp ground cardamom for that je ne sais quois….mmmmm thank you for your many trials and sharing the results because the ratios and measurements worked out quite well I am extremely Happy with this homemade granola. Smells wonderful while cooking too!
Hi ! I made this granola and I was a bit disappointed … I like when it’s neutral and crispy and the oats were not sticking together enough… Maybe I failed the recipe.. But I tried and it’s not my favorite recipe.. Let’s see another ! Anyway, I enjoy your site.
What a bummer, Emilie! Did you follow the recipe exactly as written without any substitutions or modifications?
This recipe is perfection! I’m always looking for a new granola recipe, and this will be a new favorite! So perfectly crunchy and delicious! My husband and I love it. Thanks so much!
We love hearing that, Jennifer!
very healthy and nutritious
Thanks, Nate!
It looks amazing. I’m trying to eat healthy these days, these long long days 🙂 Do you have the nutritional values on this?
Thanks, Diane! Nutritional information is provided only for select recipes at this time. However, if it is not available for a specific recipe, we recommend using free online resources at your discretion (you can Google “nutritional calculator”) to obtain such information. Hope that helps!
In your 17 attempts, did you try Almond Extract in place of Vanilla?? (for a more almond-y flavor)
I actually have not. But it sounds like a great idea if you want that extra almond flavor! 🙂
Do you think I can swap the honey for maple syrup to make it vegan?
What a great idea! But unfortunately, without having tried this myself, I cannot answer with certainty. But if you get a chance to try it, please let me know how it turns out! 🙂
What is and where to buy Almond Butter?
Hi Helen! Similar to peanut butter, you can purchase almond butter at your local grocery store – they should have it with their other nut butters. Hope that helps!
