Wonton Mozzarella Sticks
With just 5 ingredients, you can make these mozzarella sticks in just 10 minutes. That’s it. It doesn’t get ANY easier than this!
It’s 5:00PM on a Sunday night, 4 hours until the Breaking Bad series finale. I figured I should write today’s post before I watch it, when I’m level-headed and all, because I may just be in too much shock from the whole thing. This final season has just been absolutely crazy with too many jaw-dropping moments. I can barely sit still knowing that it’s the end today!
But let’s talk about something else. Something more pleasant. Something that’ll keep me from sweating bullets for 85 minutes. Like these mozzarella sticks. Yes, crisp, fried wonton-wrapped mozzarella sticks. With warm, chunky marinara dipping sauce.
These mozzarella sticks come together in just 10 minutes with only 3 main ingredients – string cheese, wonton wrappers and marinara sauce. Feel free to use homemade or store-bought marinara sauce – whichever is easiest for you. We had chicken parmesan for dinner last night so we had a ton of marinara sauce to use up. Either way, these mozzarella sticks are so incredibly easy to make and absolutely perfect for game day, snacking or a dinner substitute!
Wonton Mozzarella Sticks
Ingredients
- 1 cup vegetable oil
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 4 string cheese, halved
- 8 wonton wrappers
- ½ cup marinara sauce, homemade or store-bought
Instructions
- Heat vegetable oil in a medium skillet to 325 degrees F.
- In a small bowl, whisk together egg and 1 tablespoon water.
- Working one at a time, brush wonton wrapper with egg wash; place string cheese in the center of each wrapper. Bring the bottom edge of the wrap tightly over the cheese, rolling from bottom to top until the top of the sheet is reached, being careful not to tear the wrapper. Repeat with remaining wrappers and string cheese.
- Add string cheese to the skillet and cook until golden brown and crispy, about 1-2 minutes. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate.
- Serve immediately with marinara sauce, if desired.

Just made these for a party and they were a HUGE hit! The combination of crispy wonton wrapper and gooey mozzarella cheese was absolutely perfect. Thanks for the recipe, I’ll definitely be making these again!
I just did a test run for my Christmas appetizers evening and tried baking them instead of using the oil as I’m not a great fryer. They were okay and the cheese did melt nicely, but I think next time I will increase the heat to 400. I did put them on a baking rack raised above a baking tin and brushed them with fair amount of infused oil. Anyone else tried baking???
Can you freeze before frying?
There was a restaurant near me growing up that made these, but they had a layer of spinach between the cheese and wonton and it was amazing, even to a kid who didn’t want to eat vegetables.
I was curious if you have ever tried baking them and how that turned out?
I actually haven’t – sorry!
Temperature and time to cook for baked? Lovely, simple recipe. Thank you.
Unfortunately, without further recipe testing, I cannot answer with certainty. As always, please use your best judgment.
It’s a lot easier and less messy to use water to seal your wonton wrappers instead of egg and just as effective. Work smarter not harder! You’re welcome. 🙂
This is so rude! I’m sure there was a much better way you could have made this suggestion. Some people…I swear. Chunga thank you so much for your great recipes! 🙂
Im going to try this recipe im so exited cant wait!
Can I make these] ahead of time and warm in the oven before serving?
These are really best when served immediately.
Can you just spray lightly with Pam and bake in oven
Yes, you can certainly bake these, although these are really best when fried!
looks so good !

I tried this recipe and my cheese melted into the skillet 🙁 but they were still good. My sister suggested next time freezing the cheese strings before using them to make sure they don’t melt as fast in the skillet during cooking.
I recommend making sure there are no holes in the wonton wrappers – that can also cause the cheese to melt and out into the skillet. Hope that helps!
Silly question but when you put the egg wash on the wrappers, then the cheese, does the egg wash end up on the outside or inside of the finished product?
The egg wash is brushed “outside” the finished product.

My pregnant heart (and belly) NEED this. Midnight run for wontons?! LOL Thanks for sharing!
No judgment on the midnight run for wontons – I’d probably do the same and I’m not even prego!
So simple and yet so good!
Will you judge me if I tell you that I’m afraid of frying things? I’ve had bad experiences with hot oil. Do you think these would work if I baked them?
