reasons to make pf chang’s chicken lettuce wraps
- Lightning fast recipe
- Budget-friendly
- Copycat favorite
- Healthy and low-carb yet so filling
- Can easily be doubled or tripled
- Freezes and reheats very well
Ingredients
Ground chicken
Ground chicken is a great economical, quick cooking option. Ground turkey, pork or beef (extra lean) can also be used.
Garlic
We love subbing in garlic puree, one of our favorite meal prep hacks to cut down on prep time even more.
Onion
Yellow, sweet or white onion will all work well here.
Hoisin
A key ingredient, the hoisin adds a complementary sweet, savory and tangy flavor to the filling.
Soy sauce
Tamari and coconut aminos can be used for gluten-free options.
Rice wine vinegar
Rice vinegar and rice wine vinegar are the same, and are used interchangeably.
Ginger
Similar to the garlic, we love subbing in ginger puree in a pinch.
Sriracha
For a little bit of heat! Chili garlic paste is also a great sub.
Water chestnuts
This helps bulk up the filling, and adds a nice little crunch.
Butter lettuce
Sturdy lettuce such as Bib or butter lettuce are both great options.
tips and tricks for success
- Use your favorite protein. This recipe will work well with quick-cooking ground chicken or ground turkey. Finely diced chicken breasts or chicken thighs can also be used.
- Use reduced sodium soy sauce. Reduced sodium has less sodium and less salt without compromising flavor.
- Make it mild. Need something a little more mild for the littles at home? Skip the Sriracha altogether.
- Sturdy leaves are best. Use Bibb or butter lettuce – both are ideal for wrapping as they have wide, pliable and sturdy leaves without falling apart when filled.
- Freeze leftovers. The filling is very freezer-friendly. Portion the leftover filling into plastic freezer bags in individual servings, squeezing out any excess air before sealing. Label, date and freeze up to 3 months.

PF Chang’s Chicken Lettuce Wraps: Frequently Asked Questions
Bib or butter lettuce are both great choices – strong and sturdy that can hold up filling without breaking apart. Romaine lettuce is also a great option for a crisper wrap.
The optional Sriracha adds a little bit of heat but can be skipped altogether without compromising flavor.
Use gluten-free hoisin sauce, and swap the soy sauce for tamari or coconut aminos. Rice wine vinegar is generally gluten-free such as Marukan Rice Vinegar.
Leftover filling can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days, adding a splash of chicken broth when reheating (if needed). Store leftover lettuce separately in an airtight container or Ziploc bag to prevent sogginess and wilting.
Yes! Let the filling cool completely and portion into plastic freezer bags. To reheat, thaw overnight in the fridge, reheating over low heat, stirring occasionally, until heated through.

Sounds like you have crappy take-out food in the UK. That stinks for you.
I made these tonight and they were a hit! Even my 1 year old daughter liked them! I’m making them again on Saturday for a potluck. Thank you!!
I used Dark Soy sauce, which is a bit sweeter and much better tasting than regular soy sauce, and it took this dish from really good to AMAZING!
Oh my! I adore these lettuce cups! One of my favorite dinners ever!
I’ve made these many times, and they’re always a hit! At home, I’ll throw in crimini mushrooms, black bean sauce, and chill paste and top with matchstick carrots, lime, cilantro, and peanuts. For a crowd, I keep it simple, chuck into a crock pot, and bring rice as a side. Thanks for a recipe that keeps making me look like an awesome cook! 🙂
I have made these many times and even when we had guests over. My husband loves these. I did not use the chestnuts or green onion. Kept it simple. Super delicious.
PF Chang’s chicken lettuce wraps taste pretty dang good. I’m not sure how to beat that by 1M times, but I’m willing to give it a try.
Now if you could just replicate the ambience at the restaurant, you’d be all set.
I’ve had both. Believe me, she’s not kidding about hers being better.
Recipe calls for 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar
I found wine vinegar and rice vinegar but not that which is listed. I’m about to make this, wish me luck.
OK, used the rice vinegar. This was great. Family loved it (made rice for them; I did the lettuce wraps) and it will be on the rotation in this house. Thank you very much.
My husband is obsessed with this dish and asks for it about twice a month. Thank you! Your site is amazing.
I’ve been making this for a LLOOOOOONGG time and perfecting (to my taste anyway) it along the way. I’ve found that ground TURKEY is even better. It adds a bit more flavor all around and less fat. VERY tasty!!!
Would you happen to have the recipe for the sauce they use on these.? They are wonderful buy the way!! We love them!!!
Unfortunately, I do not.
they use hoisin sauce. Most grocery stores have it. I added some sesame oil
I’ve had both. Believe me, she’s not kidding about hers being better.
I usually add some chopped mushrooms and reduce the hoisin to half…super recipe!
Made this tonight. My husband put this on the “make again” list. This is so delicious and I agree, better than PF Chang’s. Partially because there are no mushrooms, partially because you can customize it. Overall, absolutely wonderful!
I stumbled across this recipe about a month ago and I’ve made it at least 4 times since then. Better than any CHICKEN LETTUCE WRAPS I’ve ever had anywhere. Tonight I added in an extra helping of ginger and reduced the hoisin to sauce to just 2 TBSP. For anyone watching calorie intake/output this saves you literally hundreds of calories. Thank you so much for your recipes. This is my favorite go-to quick dinner
I am try this recipe for soy chunk. yummy taste
I came by this recipe while looking for dinner recipe ideas on Pinterest. I love PF Chang’s lettuce wraps, so of course I was excited to try this recipe. Not only was this super easy to make, it was absolutely delicious. I am now anxious to try some of your other recipes. Thank you! You have a fan in me!
What is the serving size? Is it 1/2 cup of chicken mixture? I’m not sure what the nutritional content is and would like to know. Can anyone answer this? Please and thank you
Yes, each serving is roughly 1/2 – 1/3 cup.
Thanks for the recipe! Tonight was the second time I’ve made this and my whole family LOVES it. My 8 year old daughter says it’s her favorite dinner and calls it PF Mommy night. Just want to say thanks!
Have made 2 batches of this, this week alone! Took it to my office & ate at my desk – everyone was raving about the aroma & wanted the recipe, so now you have a bunch of NYC’ers on this receipe. Well done! I even bought a food processor last night to quicken up round 2 & it was way easier.
Just made tonight and it is fabulously delish!! Thanks so much for this copycat recipe. I can’t wait to try your other ones. Only change I made was to use ground turkey because it was actually a little leaner than the ground chicken at my grocer’s.
