Spinach Tomato Tortellini
The most unbelievably creamy tortellini you will make in just 15 min. Doesn’t get easier or tastier than that!
I had one of those days where I was swamped with errands left and right – a smog check, a visit to the DMV, a carwash, grocery shopping, giving Butters a bath, etc. And it seemed like every little thing that could possibly go wrong went wrong.
So by the time I came home, I was very close to picking up the phone and ordering take-out. But then I saw a bag of tortellini on the kitchen counter and knew I had to do something with it. After all, with a bad day of errands, homemade comfort food is very much needed.
Now the best part about this dish is that it came together in 20 minutes from start to finish. It’s just that easy. And you won’t believe the amazing blend of flavors along with that creamy goodness, loaded with fresh spinach and juicy tomato chunks. Once you take that first bite, I promise you that you’ll be begging for seconds and thirds!
Spinach Tomato Tortellini
Ingredients
- 12 ounces tortellini pasta
- 1 ½ cups heavy cream
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 14.5-ounce can petite diced tomatoes
- 3 cups spinach, roughly chopped
- 2 teaspoons dried basil
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- ½ teaspoon dried thyme
- ¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes, optional
- Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- ¼ cup grated Parmesan
Instructions
- In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook pasta according to package instructions; drain well.
- In a small bowl, whisk together heavy cream and flour; set aside.
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium high heat. Add garlic, and cook, stirring frequently, until fragrant, about 1 minute.
- Stir in tomatoes, spinach, basil, oregano, thyme and red pepper flakes, if using; season with salt and pepper, to taste. Cook, stirring occasionally, until spinach begins to wilt, about 2 minutes.
- Gradually whisk in heavy cream mixture and Parmesan, and cook, whisking constantly, until slightly thickened, about 3-4 minutes. Stir in tortellini and gently toss to combine.
- Serve immediately.

I’ve been making this recipe for years and figured I should probably leave a review! It’s one of my family’s favorites. I use a 20 oz package of tortellini and it’s plenty saucy enough for the addition. We like having leftovers for the week lol. I added some baby Bella mushrooms for funsies this last time and it was yummy! I’ll continue making this recipe for many more years to come.
I make this quite often. Love it so much. I use the Trader Joe’s spinach tortellini and it’s so yummy. Planning on trying it with penne or something else tonight.
Thank you!
Tried this recipe for the first time. This recipe is a KEEPER!! It is AWESOME!! It took me a little longer than 15 minutes but well worth the finale!! What a great find!! So full flavor from the very first bite and I can see adding chicken or shrimp to this recipe.
Didn’t have any tortellini so I used rotini. Delicious! And extremely easy.

This was super easy to make and delicious. Next time I make it I’ll put half the cream, I think it was excessive.
I just have to thank you for sharing this recipe. I love it so much I’ve been making it about twice a month for a year now, lol!!
Love this. So easy. My daughter in law requested it for her birthday!! After the veggies have cooked some I add cubes chicken. For really extra creamy. Add some cream cheese!! Oh my!!
Made this today and it was delicious! Took me less than 25 minutes. Thank you for the recipe!

Soo super late to the party, I know – 2018 is almost over, BUT..this dish is STILL amazing!!! Highly recommend it! So flavorful and so easy!!
Please don’t say 2018 is almost over! I’m going to have a panic attack! Haha thank you, Rachael!
Hello! Can the recipe be doubled up? Thanks!
Yes, of course!
Made it already a few times, because it’s easy, quick and delicious! Even my daughter who isn’t a fan of spinach likes it.
That’s great!
Took me over a hour to make (still learning the cooking process), but everyone enjoyed it and even came back for seconds!
This was awesome!! I frequently buy our grocery store’s brand of frozen cheese tortellini. The homemade sauce blew the jar sauce away for sure! And so easy! As a full-time working mom, I appreciate convenience mixed with a gourmet-“esque” recipe!
Has anybody used the frozen chopped spinach… I have all the ingredients but we don’t have spinach on hand:( and I really want this yummy dish tonight!!!
I am NOT what you might call a domestic goddess – I rarely cook dinner, much less a “scratch” dinner. (Yes, this is what I consider from scratch) This dinner was very easy to prepare and was on the table in less than 30 min. It took me longer that it “should” but was still very easy. I am making a conscious effort to make more dinners during the week so this was a great way to start.
Even my hubby who says that it’s not “dinner” without meat loved this meal – he says he didn’t even miss meat. Next time I might get really crazy and add chicken!
Thank you!! I’ve saved a ton of your recipes to try on my quest to be a better wifey. 😉
Ive made this several times and have added chicken to it…soooo good!
