I know. Dog treats on Damn Delicious? I never thought I’d see the day. But I’ve been spending a lot of time and money shopping for good-quality dog treats for Butters here, but then I thought, why not just make them at home?
reasons to make homemade peanut butter dog treats
- So stinking easy to make
- Short 4 ingredient list, most of which you probably have on hand
- Healthier ingredients – no added preservatives, fats or chemicals
- Economical and cost-effective
- Freezer-friendly to extend shelf-life
- Guaranteed favorite with your pups
- Makes for great gifts for pup friends, birthdays and holidays
Ingredients
Pumpkin puree
Pumpkin puree is great for digestive health for your pup. Always use pure pumpkin puree with no added sugar, salt, fat or spices.
Peanut butter
A hero ingredient here! Always opt for natural, unsalted peanut butter without added sugar or artificial sweeteners such as xylitol.
Eggs
Not only are eggs a nutritious source of protein, healthy fats, vitamins and minerals, but they also serve as a binding agent to hold the dog treats together.
Whole wheat flour
We prefer whole wheat flour as it contains more nutritional value than all-purpose flour. Rice flour can also be used as a gluten-free option.
tips and tricks for success
- Use your favorite cookie cutters. Bone-shaped cookie cutters are so much fun to work with but you can really use any kind of cookie cutter on hand – hearts, stars, dog houses, paws, etc.
- Adjust baking time as needed. The longer they bake, the crunchier they are.
- Shorter shelf life. Homemade peanut butter dog treats have a shorter shelf life as they lack preservatives compared to store-bought treats, making them susceptible to spoil relatively quickly.
- Feed in moderation. As always, give treats in moderation to avoid potential health problems such as diabetes and obesity.
- Consult with a vet. Please consult with your pet’s veterinarian regarding possible allergies, dietary restrictions and health concerns your pup may have.
freezing and storage
Storage
Homemade dog treats can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for 1-2 weeks.
Freeze after baking
Let the dog treats cool completely. Transfer the dog treats to an airtight, resealable freezer bag, thawing overnight. Label, date and freeze up to 3 months.
pro tip
Use dog safe peanut butter.
Use peanut butter without added sugar or artificial sweeteners such as xylitol. Xylitol is added to peanut butter as a low-calorie sweetener. While safe for humans, xylitol is toxic to dogs, causing hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), seizures, liver failure or even death.

I love this idea I just finished making a bach for my dogs and they smell sooooooo good!!!!!
You are an angel!! I’ve been only making my babies freezer/fridge treat since I’ve started making my own. Like for 2 years. Baking n me not really a good combo. But I thought what the heck, worst could happen it would be a learning thing. But I’m still I. Shock came out beautifully the FIRST time! That NEVER happens to me… ever.. So on behalf of Soldier, Sophie, Bella and Kizy, thank you thank you thank you!!
These are super easy to make even if you don’t have a stand mixer, and they always come out perfect! My dogs absolutely love them <3
I love this recipe and I have made some for my neighbors
I made these for the second time in a few days and I made them so quickly. I simply microwaved the pumpkin, scooped out the pumpkin (no puree) and added it to the eggs and peanut butter. The pumpkin is super cheap, delicious and easy this way. I also used three small eggs. I’m keen to try variations to these with seeds and other items.
Made these tonight.ni complaints from Marley. She lives them. The store didn’t have pumpkin..apparently it’s one of the items hard to get during covid. I bought sweet potato baby food because I was too lazy to puree something. Turned out fine I think. Lol.
Nice 4 ingredient recipe using common food staples! My dog approved!
Hey! I tripled the batch and cut them with a shot glass since I only have dinosaur cookie cutters. It made 84 and my dogs love them! Super easy to make!
My dog is a picky eater, and won’t eat generic dog treats that are found in stores. However, he absolutely loves these! I thought they were super simple to make, with ingredients I had laying around the house.
A great never fail recipe. All dogs will love it.
Charlie went nuts over these! I made the batch x4 and it took me 2 hours. So with the effort
These are awesome and very easy Thanks! 🙂
My dog loved it!we did not have pumpkin Purée do we used apple sauce.it was his b-day so we made them for his friends to!
I have been making these for my Great Pyrenees for several months now. So much cheaper than store-bought and much better for him! I’ve never been much of a baker, but I am learning to master these. Very simple to follow recipe and fun to make too! I bought a set of dog bone shaped cutters and have made these for my friends who own Chihuahuas all the way up to Bloodhound. One of my friends told me her dog loved his and he is very picky over treats.
I read some other reviews and do substitute some of the wheat flour for oatmeal I grind up in the food processor and I add a touch of cinnamon too. I also add blueberries to half of the mix to give my fur baby an extra treat. NOTE: you will have to add more flour if you include blueberries. I’ve also learned if you turn the treats over about half to two-thirds through the baking time, it will make them crunchier and I use a fork to poke holes in them to keep them from puffing up.
This recipe is absolutely amazing! Thank you so much for sharing it with us!!!
Does parchment paper need to be used? Don’t have either or silicone mat.
Thanks!
does your recipe includes baking soda as an ingredient? cookies do not look flat, look like if they have baking soda o baking powder.
so yummy i think
so easy i could do it all day
Easy enough to make. I substituted flax meal and water for the eggs (1 tbsp flax to 3 tbsp water per large egg). Ended up only needing 2 ¼ cups of flour to get the dough right. Baked for 30 minutes. Dogs like them just fine. Next time I’ll bake longer to try and get them crispy. This batch was on the softer chewy side.
Great recipe! Peanut butter and pumpkin both my dogs love. I bought some bone shaped cookie cutters and made big treats for London the lab and smaller ones for Cody the corgi!
