Tater tots in waffle form? Um, yes, please!

I mean the person who invented this whole waffle-iron-tater-tot situation deserves a gold medal. Or Nobel Prize, really.

It’s just a genius creation – using frozen thawed tots to create a crisp savory waffle in less than 10 minutes.

And you can really have fun with this recipe so if cajun seasoning isn’t really your jam, you can add other seasonings to taste. (Side note: The additions of bacon, sour cream and runny egg never killed anyone. Just saying.)

Also, ketchup and Sriracha (or any other hot sauce) will be your best friend here. TRUST ME.

10 minutes20 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 (32-ounce) bag frozen tater tots, thawed
  • 1 tablespoon cajun seasoning
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley leaves

Directions:

  1. Preheat a waffle iron to medium-high heat. Lightly oil the top and bottom of the waffle iron or coat with nonstick spray.
  2. Working in batches, spread tater tots in an even layer into the waffle iron; season with cajun seasoning, salt and pepper, to taste. Close, pressing down firmly to flatten, and cook until golden brown and crisp, about 5-6 minutes, or until desired crispness is reached. Repeat with remaining tater tots, adding more nonstick spray as needed.
  3. Serve immediately, garnished with parsley, if desired.

  1. Can I use grated fresh potatoes instead?

    • What a great idea! But unfortunately, without having tried this myself, I cannot answer with certainty. But if you get a chance to try it, please let me know how it turns out! 🙂

    • If you make a potato pancake or latke mix. Basically shredding potatoes and adding in egg and flour/Matzo it can work well. It takes quite a bit of cooking time tho.

  2. Rated 5 out of 5

I made these & then topped them with left over chili & some cheddar cheese. Delicious!!!

Omg ive loved tatertots all my life i lived on potatoes for a year and i still love my potatoes. This is so simple and you can add ANYTHING all i can say is delish and satisfation guaranteed

  4. I used “Tater Rounds” which are flatter; once thawed, they take less time to cook. They were very crispy! Toppings are endless! For Christmas brunch, we topped the waffle with cheese and a poached egg. We found no need to spray the waffle iron because the potatoes have already bee fried once.

  5. Thanks for the recipe, but Never use Pam on a non stick surface, it leaves a film and ruins the non stick ability. Same with any cooking spray with additives, use only straight oil (not extra virgin olive oil). You can find numerous articles about this and it’s also stated with all good cookware.

  6. I’m doing this tomorrow but with sweet potato tater tots!

  7. How is the melted butter used here? It isn’t clear from the recipe. Thanks!

  8. This is delicious. 5 star to this post for sure. Thanks for sharing.

  9. I see you have a recipe for homemade tater tots that looks amazing.  I am wondering if you have you ever used that mixture directly in the waffle iron or do the tots need to be formed and fried before putting in the waffle iron?

  10. These delicious waffles are actually made with tater tots! They’re extra crispy and taste especially delicious when topped with bacon and maple syrup. For an extra delicious breakfast, it can also be fun to serve it with a fried egg.

  11. I want to try this, I am thinking my Cuisinart panini press/griddler would perform this task also, I worry about putting butter on my waffle iron, I don’t put anything on it when I do waffles…..the panini press/griddler wouldn’t concern me, anything goes with it, any thoughts from others about this idea?

  12. What a clever idea! I don’t have a waffle press, but I do have a panini press. I will do some experimenting and see what I can create.

  13. Oh my, this is fantastic!! You are so talented 🙂 So tempted to have some of it right now.

  14. Thanks for sharing this yummmm recipe

  15. Breakfast? I guess that would be good, but I would love this for dinner, too. Maybe under chicken or fish with a mustardy sauce?

  16. First heard of this a couple of years ago, quick, easy there are many other add-ins just use your imagination

  17. Genius! Will definitely make this.

  18. Clever!  My kids would have a lot of fun with this too.

  19. I just love the crisp savory waffles.  Thanks for every thing.
