The easiest fuss-free apple pear crisp made right in your crockpot with a sweet crispy topping that is TO DIE FOR!!!
I figured we needed a break from all the soups.
Yes, it’s freezing cold. And yes we need all the soups and stews we can get our hands on.
But, more importantly, we need dessert. But not just any dessert.
We still need a warm and cozy dessert.
One that requires no babysitting or fuss. One that we can just whip up into a slow cooker and walk away from.
And that’s exactly what we have here.
15 minutes prep time with just 3 things.
Your filling, Your topping. And vanilla ice cream for serving.
The most difficult thing about this is choosing which ice cream flavor to go with your apple crisp.
I recommend a classic vanilla but you can’t go wrong with any other choice.
Slow Cooker Apple Pear Crisp
Ingredients
- 4 apples, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch slices
- 3 Bosc pears, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch slices
- ⅓ cup light brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
- Pinch of ground nutmeg
For the topping
- ¾ cup all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup old fashioned oats
- ½ cup chopped pecans
- ⅓ cup light brown sugar
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt
- 8 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into cubes
Instructions
- To make the topping, combine flour, oats, pecans, sugar, cinnamon and salt in a medium bowl. Add cold butter and toss to coat, using your fingers to work the butter into the dry ingredients until it resembles coarse crumbs; set aside.
- Lightly coat the inside of a 4-qt slow cooker with nonstick spray. Place apples, pears into the slow cooker. Stir in brown sugar, flour, lemon juice, cinnamon, salt and nutmeg. Sprinkle with reserved topping, using your fingertips to gently press the crumbs into the batter.
- Place a clean dishtowel over the slow cooker. Cover and cook on low heat for 2-3 hours or high heat for 90 minutes. Remove the dishtowel and continue cooking, uncovered, until the topping is browned and the apples are just tender, about 1 hour.
- Serve warm.

Can you make this the day before, refrigerate overnight and then reheat in the slow cooker the next day?
I love your recipes I plan on making this it’s sounds so good. However, I’m on a low carb diet by doctors orders. It would be great if you would add the nutrition information.
Has anyone ever made this with steel cut oats? I have both instant and traditional steel cut oats
How could I adjust this recipe to bake in the oven? I’d like to make this for a family dinner I’m going to. I think it would be easier to prepare ahead of time at home and put it in the oven when I get there.
Just a question… In the third instruction step, you say to remove the cloth and lid so that the topping can brown. How does that happen if the lid — keeping the heat in the pot — is off? I have never used my crock pot for dessert, so this is new to me. Thanks
I am wondering if i can use Gluten Free All purpose flour instead ?
when you know the answer to the gluten free, please share with the rest of us :).
How was it prepared with gluten free flour?
This apple crisp recipe is amazing it tastes like your in heaven ahhhhh!!!!
can yo convert this recipe to cooking it in the Instant Pot?
Super easy to make recipe. I just put mine in the oven because I wasn’t thinking and I really want this for dessert right now. I used only 2 apples and several pears because we were given a huge bag of fruit from my kids schools. Can’t wait to taste!!!
Could you Please Clarify the Directions on the Slow Cooker Apple Pear Crisp.
I’m confused about the Dish Towel. Do you use the lid or not? Or just the Dish Towel. Thank you.
The purpose of the clean dishtowel is to absorb the condensation and stop it from dripping down into the dish. This is the secret to a crisp topping! And yes, the dishtowel sits in between the slow cooker insert and the lid.
Thanks for asking this question. I was confused too but now it make sense!
Would this recipe feed 15 people
Patty, this recipe yields roughly 8 servings. 🙂
I just made today and it came out great! I used more pears than apples as I had more pears on hand. Yummy treat!!
We love hearing that! 🙂
Is there are good substitute for the pecans?
You can substitute with another nut of your choice.
If you want to leave out nuts altogether – should you add more of something else to make up for it?
I am going to use cran raisins in place of the nuts. I love the combo, so I am thinking it will take up some of the moisture too.
I did it..the / crisp was delicious. I’ve always wanted to make them but don’t have an oven. Thank you..hope you’ll share more slow cooker dishes (sweet or savoury).
SO happy you liked it! Have you checked out our slow cooker section? https://damndelicious.net/category/slow-cooker/
I always enjoy recipes made from your site. But this last one had me perplexed. As a rule, if prep time is listed as 15 minutes, I always allow an additional 10-15 minutes as the recipe is new. I am not a slow cook but this one frustrated me as it took close to 50 minutes for prep. Peeling and slicing apples and pears is never fast and due to the recipe stating they should be in ½” thick slices, I couldn’t use any tools but did it all by hand. And, for those of us who bake, mixing the butter into the ingredients by hand (topping) took 5 minutes alone. I’m unsure when the countdown begins but would appreciate more accurate time so I can plan accordingly. Thanks for understanding.
Now that you did it, you probably can mark the timing down for yourself. I actually can peel and slice apples and pears really fast so my time would not work for someone that is slower at that process.
Can you clarify for me, the instructions.
Once I cook it on high for 90 min, I remove towel AND LID?
And then I cook it on HIGH or LOW for 1 hour?
Yes, the slow cooker should be uncovered completely. Then you can cook it on low for 1 hour. Hope that helps!
You are always full of surprises! We have 2 apple trees and a pear tree in our yard! We love any kind of crisp so thank you for sharing this one!
What kind of apples did you use for this recipe?
It sounds yummy!
Crisp and tart apples such as Empire, Granny Smith or Honey Crisp work best here. Hope that helps!
Sounds nice. Would I place the crockpot cover on top of the dish towel then? I guess it is used to somehow prevent premature browning. I will make this today, thanks.
Yes, that is correct!
Where it says lay a clean dish towel over the slow cooker, what purpose does the dish towel serve? Is it to prevent the topping from getting moist? And does the towel sit between the slow cooker pot and the lid?
The purpose of the clean dishtowel is to absorb the condensation and stop it from dripping down into the dish. This is the secret to a crisp topping! And yes, the dishtowel sits in between the slow cooker insert and the lid.
