Kahlua Hot Chocolate
Skip the store-bought hot cocoa mix – homemade hot chocolate is easier to make than you think with just a handful of ingredients that’s already sitting in your pantry. And it’s even better with a hint of Kahlúa!
I remember sipping on my first hot chocolate back in the Poconos Mountains when my dad was teaching me how to ski. They had the boxed cocoa mix and it was the coziest, most comforting drink I could ever have on the mountaintop covered in snow.
This was actually the only time I could have hot chocolate. My mother was very strict on having “no sweets” in the house. But little did I know that you could actually make hot chocolate from scratch so easily with just a handful of ingredients that’s already sitting in your pantry!
With homemade hot chocolate, you can control the sweetness and indulgent chocolate levels to taste – the boxed mix is always a little too strong for me. But the best part about the homemade version is the Kahlúa! Yes, this is strictly an “adults only” drink. Just add a splash of Kahlúa to your piping hot chocolate and you’ll have a cozy, grown-up hot chocolate. And you can’t forget about those marshmallows slathered in salted caramel and a drizzle of melted chocolate. I mean, that’s the only way to have hot chocolate, right?
And with the holidays right around the corner, you could even gift this to friends and family. Simply combine the dry ingredients and throw them into a cute jar with a ribbon and you’re set. It doesn’t get easier, or cheaper, than that!

Thank you ! i am really excited to try this at my kitchen. Its damn delicious!!!!
Well, it’s damn delicious!
Yes, you are right about the hot chocolate being topped with marsh mellows, caramel, and chocolate drizzle.
Would it be possible to substitute the Dutch processed to natural cocoa powder? It’s very hard to find Dutch around where I live. Thanks
Sure! The taste will vary just slightly – the Dutch process version has an earthier but flatter flavor while the natural cocoa version yields a fruitier, yet more acidic, flavor. I hope that helps, Ashley!
This was delicious. The cinnamon and nutmeg kicked hot chocolate up to a whole new level.
Great recipe. I am fond of these items too. Usually mix chocolates with every dish I prepare 🙂
If I need this to serve about 5 or 6, should I really triple the recipe?!
Combine all in a pot and transfer it to a thermos??
Yes, what a great idea!
