Blueberry Lemonade
Made with an easy blueberry simple syrup, this lemonade is so refreshing, sweet and tangy. It’s the perfect way to cool down on a hot day!
I’ve been blessed to live in California for the last 14 years, leaving me to eat blueberries all year long. But when I saw the huge buy-one-get-one-free blueberry sale at my local grocery store, I stocked up on 6 pounds of blueberries. I may have been overjoyed and way too ambitious thinking that I could eat all of it.
So when life gives you blueberries, well, you make blueberry lemonade.
It’s definitely an unconventional lemonade but after making strawberry lemonade and raspberry peach lemonade, I just wanted to try something really different.
And boy, was I in for a treat. With a simple homemade blueberry syrup, this drink could not get any easier. It’s wonderfully fruity and sweet from the plump juicy blueberries with just enough of a tart kick. And it’s really the perfect way to cool down on a hot day. Plus, if you’re anything like me, well, you’ll sneak in some vodka for an adult-style lemonade!
Blueberry Lemonade
Ingredients
- ½ cup Imperial Sugar Extra Fine Granulated Sugar
- 1 cup blueberries
- ¾ cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
Instructions
- To make the blueberry simple syrup, combine sugar and 1 cup water in a medium saucepan over medium heat, stirring until the sugar has dissolved. Stir in blueberries and bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer until blueberries have broken down, about 3-4 minutes.
- Strain blueberry mixture through a cheesecloth or fine sieve; let cool.
- In a large pitcher, whisk together blueberry simple syrup, lemon juice and 5 cups water. Place in the refrigerator until chilled.
- Serve over ice and blueberries, if desired.

Made this several times. Love it.
I love lemonade. Now add blueberry.. wow. Thank you for this.
When life gives you a large amount of blueberries, make a large batch of this blueberry lemonade! Then freeze the rest of the blueberries!
I freeze blueberries in small plastic storage containers. They are refreshing when eaten frozen!
I had some extra frozen blueberries when I came across this recipe. It was delicious my whole family enjoyed it. I will definitely make again.
Can I do the same steps but with strawberries? Boil some with the syrup to intensify the flavor?
I had my family over and this was the perfect drink to bring them all together.
The original recipe is so tart, sweet and delicious. I’m going to try a batch with a touch of green cardamom and lemon zest in the blueberry syrup.
Needed to get rid of some lemon spindrift (truly just lemon juice and carbonated water–would avoid) so I substituted the water out and it was the best thing I’ve had in a while. Reminded me of a carbonated drink I was obsessed with in Prague. Would recommend!
This looks lovely.Do you use soda water? Will definitely be making this.
I just finished making this and WOW!! I was wondering if there’s anyway I could make anything out of the blueberries that I strained out of the purée? Maybe a jam? Just to avoid any waste 🙂 if you have any ideas please lmk!
Great recipe! However, I would recommend using 1 cup of sugar instead if your blueberries aren’t that sweet.
I made it and my whole family enjoyed it, it certainly brightened up my day!! I found it was a little watered though down so I added a few more teaspoons on sugar but other than that I loved it!
Can frozen berries be use in this recipe?
Sure!
Fast simple and so refreshing
I made my alcoholic drink inspired by yours and it was great. I used vodka and sparkling water as a supplement.
The only problem is that I live in Brazil and blueberry is very expensive, so they lack some for decoration.

Thanks for the post 🙂
Instead of using sugar are there anything else that i can use like a more healthier substitute.
You can try honey or stevia but as always, please use your best judgement when making substitutions and modifications. Hope that helps!
I made this but used a 1:1 sugar/water – i found it too watered down. But delicious with this adjustment.
I made this! It is great, I’ve been drinking this everyday since your post! Thanks a bunch.
Yum!
I just made a HUGE batch of this (I sextupled the recipe) for my daughter’s Brown Bear, Brown Bear birthday party. I needed something to go with the purple cat, as all of the food items were based on the colors of the animals in the book, and this lemonade fit the bill perfectly! I subbed out maple syrup (2/3:1) for the refined sugar, as we are not doing refined sugars for her, and it tasted amazing. And I must admit that while setting up the party, I did definitely add a shot of vodka to my glass; it made for a lovely and refreshing cocktail. As for the lemonade itself, it was an enormous hit and I had hardly any left at the end of the party. I will definitely be using this recipe again!
Anyone know how long you can keep the blueberry stipe for ? I made way too much ! Don’t want to waste it
