Slow Cooker Garlic Parmesan Potatoes
Crisp-tender potatoes loaded with garlicky parmesan goodness – and it’s the easiest side dish you will ever make right in the crockpot!
Christmas is in T-minus 24 hours. The tree is up. The presents are wrapped. And the menu is set. No, wait. I actually don’t have any of that ready yet. I should really finish my Christmas shopping at some point.
But first, these garlic parmesan potatoes – a super simple side dish that anyone can make.
All you need is a handful of baby Dutch potatoes tossed in the slow cooker with a little bit of olive oil, butter, garlic and fresh herbs (or dry herbs, whichever you have on hand). You’ll top it off with a lid and let it cook nice and slow until you get that crisp-tender goodness.
When ready to serve, go ahead and sprinkle on that freshly grated Parmesan. You can even add a little extra – after all, it’s Christmas time, and I’m sure Santa will forgive you for doubling up that Parmesan!
Slow Cooker Garlic Parmesan Potatoes
Ingredients
- 3 pounds baby Dutch yellow potatoes, halved
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- ½ teaspoon dried oregano
- ½ teaspoon dried basil
- ½ teaspoon dried dill
- Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- ¼ cup freshly grated Parmesan
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley leaves
Instructions
- Lightly coat the inside of a slow cooker with nonstick spray. Place potatoes into the slow cooker. Stir in olive oil, butter, garlic, oregano, basil and dill, and gently toss to combine; season with salt and pepper, to taste.
- Cover and cook on low heat for 4-5 hours or high heat for 2-3 hours, or until tender.*
- Serve immediately, sprinkled with Parmesan and garnished with parsley, if desired.

Made these for a dinner party. It was great because I just dumped them in and didn’t have to cook a side while guests were here. Very good. We had a lot left over. Will make again.
I made these for Easter. They were perfectly cooked when we got home from church. I got so many compliments on them.
Done these potatoes for the first time today and the were bloody delicious will most certainly be making them again
Super yum, super easy. Thanks!
Have made these over & over. My go to easy potato side. Everyone complements how good these are. Thank you for sharing such wonderful recipe!
The were damn delicious just as advertised. Will definitely make again
These look delicious and I am planning to make them today. The recipe says to halve the baby potatoes. But in the pictures it looks like many of them are whole.
I have a bag from the Little Potato Company and these potatoes are quite small. The biggest ones are only an inch long. Not sure what to do here. Should I only halve the 1 inch potatoes and leave the others whole?
Thanks in advance for your advice!
Hi Lisa! We recommend halving all of the potatoes. The photo may look like some of them are whole but they are actually all cut in half. Hope that helps!
I had these at a party Friday night and they were delicious. Going to pass the recipe along to friends to take to holiday parties. Thanks for another great recipe.
Yummy…gonna cook potatoes a lot this way from now on! Used whole garlic clove smashed, fresh parsley and salt and pepper…
Super yummy and didn’t last long! My only issue was how much liquid was in the pot and not stuck to the potatoes like sauce, however they’re overall very tasty!
Can I leave out the dill? I am out.
Could this recipe be made the day before and then reheated ok warm in the crock pot the next day?
Should I mix the ingredients with the potatoes, or just dump everything into the slow cooker?
Yes, the ingredients should be mixed together.
Very delicious and convenient for dinner while working thank you
These potatoes totally rock!! They were a hit!! Everyone I made them for can’t wait until I make them again. Thank you for your awsome recipes- they are always over the top great
I cooked these over the weekend and they turned out great. Not crispy on the outside, but very creamy throughout. I added a couple of minced jalapeno pepper and a 1/4 cup of minced red onions. Delicious!
Rick, they won’t turn out crisp if you add in a lot if wet vegetables.
I’ve used this recipe several times with some variation: I’m lactose intolerant so I’ve omitted the parmesan and butter. I used in their stead olive oil and vegan butter. I’ve also used gold and red potatoes (ones thin enough so that I didn’t have to peel them), cut roughly into 1″ sizes (to mimic the baby gold in the recipe). Another way I varied it was not coating the inside of the pot with oil but instead mixing the potatoes, oil and herbs together in a bowl, dumping it into the slow cooker and finally dotting the top with vegan butter. Its been an easy gluten free side at different functions not to mention saves space while I’m using the stove and oven
These potatoes were very easy to throw together, and they tasted great. Of course, we love garlic, so I added more garlic than the recipe called for, and I pressed the garlic instead of mincing it. Serving it with the fresh grated Parmesan really kicks it up another notch in flavor. Definitely not worth skipping that! We enjoyed these very much, and look forward to having them again!
We love hearing that!
Love your crock pot recipe is there any way I could save some calories with replacing the butter as I am trying to lose weight
What a great idea! But unfortunately, without having tried this myself, I cannot answer with certainty. As always, please use your best judgment when making substitutions and modifications.
can i add carrots to the potatoes
Of course!
Was very disappointed with this recipe. Turned out very bland since the crockpot creates too much moisture. Even putting them in the oven for a bit couldn’t save them.
I’m sorry that this recipe did not turn out the way you had imagined. I only post recipes that have been successfully tested in my own kitchen, and as you can see from the dozens of comments here, many of these readers have had great outcomes in the final dish as well. However, I understand that we all have different taste preferences, and I really appreciate your honest feedback.
I have a few suggestions for “too much moisture complaints”:
1. While I don’t usually have this problem, when I do (if I don’t think it will lower cooking temp to a risk zone) I turn up the heat to high and open or remove the lid for a while
2. I’ve read in other places to insert paper towels or a kitchen towel over the pot and under the lid to catch moisture
3. Until I actually read my crockpot instructions I had no idea you aren’t supposed to latch the lid shut while cooking, just for transport, or excess moisture can accumulate
I hope these help the few who are getting too much moisture
Thank you so much for this!!! I did not know you aren’t supposed to latch the lid and I ALWAYS have a moisture problem with crispy recipes—the one time I didn’t was when I used a kitchen towel under the lid for an apple cobbler recipe years and years ago… a trick I totally forgot until reading your comment. So glad that I read the comments before making!
You can put paper towels just under the lid to absorb the moisture while you cook. 😉
I found this tip when I was melting large amounts of chocolate! Didn’t want any water drops in it!
Hi I plan on doubling the recipe for Easter Sunday , I will use a 6qt crockpot , since you said you used a 3 at.
Can you use salted light butter ( land o lakes )or does it need to be unsalted ?
You can use salted butter but please be mindful of adding additional salt, to taste.
I’m not sure what I did wrong, but these did not turn out. I doubled the recipe. I used baby Yukon gold potatoes cut in half. Even after 8 hours on low, most of the potatoes were hard in the middle. There seemed to be a lot of liquid in the bottom of the slow cooker. I have a 7 quart All Clad Slow Cooker. I’m new to slow-cooking so any and all advice for the future would be appreciated!
Doubling a slow cooker recipe can be a bit finicky – if the slow cooker is overloaded, the potatoes or the chicken will not cook through properly. Hope that helps!
I have not been able to find baby Dutch potatoes in Canada. If I use another type of potato, what size chunks should they be cut? Thanks
About 1/2-1 inch thick.
You had me at the word, garlic. Yum!
These were not good at all! Maybe I used the wrong potatoes or cooked them too long. But I will not be trying these again.
Hey there! Very new to the whole cooking thing so this might be a silly question to ask, how do you prep your potatoes before you put them in your crockpot? Do you wash and let them dry or just wash and scrub?
You can wash, scrub and dry with a kitchen towel – that’s how I do it! 🙂
Hello, trying this recipe tonight. Added it all to my crock pot as you said, but I accidentally went ahead and added the Parmesan with all the other ingredients…. will this mess anything up? Thanks!
Not at all!
Hi Chungah, What do you think the serving size is? Dawn
About 1/2 cup.
Any idea what would happen if I had them cooking all day on low? 8-10 hours? Thanks!
Unfortunately, without further recipe testing, I cannot answer with certainty. As always, please use your best judgment regarding substitutions and modifications.
Can i use fresh parmesan cheese instead of the kraft stuff in the can?
Yes, I always recommend fresh! 🙂
Thanks ! 🙂
Do you think russet potatoes would be OK in this, if they were cut in half or even quarters?
Quarters or even eighths!
Hi Chungah. These potatoes sound like the perfect side dish for Christmas, when my lone oven will be busy with other dishes. So 3 pounds of potatoes to serve 6…that sounds like a lot of potatoes per person! I am feeding 14. We will have a buffet with a couple of different meats and several side dishes, so I don’t think I’ll double the potatoes (my family is leftover averse for some reason). Maybe I will increase it by 50%. Does that sound right? Has anyone had this recipe stretch to feed more than 6?
Girl, you’re a life saver!!! I’m making your lemon butter chicken tonight and had a roasted potato recipe for a side but then I realized that at two different temperatures it wasn’t gonna work… you saved my butt, can’t wait to try this!
This was wonderful! I needed an easy way to use up some potatoes- I used yukon golds cut into 1” chunks and threw in a cubed ham steak to make it a main course. It smelled amazing while cooking and tasted delicious.
It’s not Christmas but came across this recipe and decided to make this tonight with my country ribs that are in my oven. My house Smell’s awesome and can’t wait to try these potatoes! Thanks so much!
Can u add chicken in this? And how high does the crockpot need to be on
Yes, absolutely. But unfortunately, without further recipe testing, I cannot answer with certainty regarding temperature and time. As always, please use your best judgment.
Do you mix the ingredients in the crock pot or layer them?
You can stir everything right into the slow cooker – why dirty another pan?
If I wanted to double the recipe & bake them In a large disposable pan for a house party. Any suggestions on time & temp?
I don’t have any of the baby potatoes, so can I use Russets instead?
How long can they be kept in the crockpot once done? I have a family picnic and would like to keep the crock pot on the keep low setting as people come at different times. They will probably get soggy, right?
Do you have a “warm” function available? That would really be best but as always, please use your best judgment.
Hi, can I cook them on rice cooker? I don’t have crockpot. Thanks 🙂
Unfortunately, I cannot answer with certainty as I have never tried cooking potatoes in a rice cooker. As always, please use your best judgment.
Can you use minced garlic in olive oil in a jar.
Absolutely!
I want to add some carrots to mine. Would you recommend adjusting the cooking time, as I know carrots and potatoes don’t necessarily take the same amount of time to cook?
Yes, you can add the carrots later on.
Can you mix chicken and some other vegetables with these potatoes?
Yes, absolutely.
Hello
Can I use regular potatoes and just quarter them.
Just used my last bag of baby potatoes for Easter dinner
Yes, absolutely.
I am always on the hunt for new slow cooker recipes, so thanks for sharing! I have never thought of cooking potatoes in a crock pot, I will be trying that out ASAP!
Made this wonderful dish tonight and it was delish! I only had red potatoes on had and it worked out great. Had to cook them longer in my 6 quart crockpot for about 5 1/2 hours on low (possibly my potatoes were not cut small enough.)
This recipe was so easy and my guest loved them. Most definitely a keeper and can see myself making this for potlucks and big family get-togethers.
Thank you for sharing!!
Can I use fresh instead of dried ingredients?
Yes, absolutely.
Would the cooking time be affected if I leave the fingerling potatoes whole? (i.e. don’t cut them in half as the recipe states)
Yes, cooking time may have to be adjusted accordingly.
Has anyone ever used little red potatoes for this? I usually use red potatoes bud don’t want to mess up the recipe.
Red potatoes should work just fine.
This looks delicious, but I currently do not own a crockpot in China, where I teach during the school year. Is there an oven or stovetop method? I do have an enameled cast iron Dutch oven and an enamel rectangular casserole. Thanks
If you do not have a slow cooker, you can try these garlic parmesan roasted potatoes instead – it’s my absolute favorite side dish! You can also check out all of my side dish recipes here.
I made these last week and my family LOVED them. I used Russet potatoes, but kept everything else the same. They were DELICIOUS! To reheat the next day, I used the microwave until they were warm and then popped them in the oven for 5 minutes at 350 to get that crisp texture. Just added this recipe to my recipe box. Thanks so much for sharing!
These are in my crockpot right now! I used red potatoes and added onions. Can’t wait to try them!
I halved this recipe and still ended up cooking them for about 4.5 hours. It turned out great! Definitely using this recipe again.
How many servings does this recipe make if I make it as posted? Want to serve it for my home group of 10 tonight And trying to decide how much I need. Thanks much. Looks yummy!
I see now that it says 6 servings:).
Was a little oily with both butter and oil in the mix but a nice flavour. I quartered the baby potatoes and it cooked for about 4½ hours on low. Might reduce butter/oil just slightly. Would make again. Thanks for the recipe!
Made this for Easter dinner. Worked out wonderfully. Put everything in at 11:30 on HIGH. Checked it at 1:30 and got a little worried as the potatoes felt hard still. But sure enough, when 2:30 rolled around, they were soft and wonderful. I love how easy this recipe is to customize. Just put the spices you like in it; however, the spices you recommended were delicious. Thank you!
Has anyone decided how long to cook the potatoes if dividing recipe in half?
I would like to know this too as I plan to cook only 1.5lb potatoes. Carol, did you change cooking time?
How much salt and pepper? I know it says “to taste” but is there a certain amount to start with that you recommend? Thanks!
Kim, that really depends on you and your taste preferences – some people like adding a lot, some people like adding less. It’s really up to you. You can also check out this great article on What It Really Means to “Salt to Taste”.
thanks i cant wait to try these thanks chungah
Hi can I use red potatoes?
Yes, of course!
I used red potatoes. Absolutely delicious!
Do you put the olive oil right in the slow cooker on top of potatoes?
Yes, that’s exactly right. Why dirty another bowl?
I have had a Slow Cooker for the last 30 years plus but always thought I had to add liquid to the contents or it would crack. So good to know I can do these potatoes and other dishes and not only casseroles and soups. Thank you. Never to old to learn.
If I doubled the recipe would I have to cook them longer?
You may have to adjust the cooking time as needed to ensure that the potatoes are fully cooked through.
Chungah – I love your blog and have made several recipes on it over the past few months! These looks absolutely delicious. I love roasted potatoes with herbs and garlic. The hardest part about making these potatoes will be waiting to eat them! 😀
Hi, wanted to let you know the first recipe that I tried was the chicken with sun dried tomato cream sauce…damn delicious it was!!! Had your buttermilk chicken recently and it was good as well. Plan on making these potatoes tomorrow. I plan on cutting the potatoes in half…wondering if the ingredients would be too overwhelming if I kept them as directed or should I also cut them in half?
Kim, if you plan on halving the potatoes, it may be best to halve everything else.
Thank you! I thought so too but I didn’t know if they would be too dry. Will try halfing. Assuming will be fabulous, will post of it seems better to keep the measurements as in original recipe. With your chicken, we love some sauce soni decided to cut the thighs back to 4 and kept the measurements as directed. It worked out fantastic for the sun dried tomato recipe, mmmm mmm, so yummy!
Did halving the recipe work? I’m needing to do this also!
I did half in a 2 quart slow cooker. Used red skinned potatoes cut in 4 or 6 pieces. They didn’t crisp but we’re the best potatoes I have ever made. Wonderful flavor, even though I forgot the parsley.
Thanks for sharing! These look delicious!
I have made alot of your recipes.. No fail ever, The faves are, Butter Chicken, Beef and Brockley, Chicken and Mushroom soup, alot of the Asian dishes too.
I am making the Spinach dip and these potatoes today.
lemon Orzo was devine. Oh, and the Mexican dishes are fab!
Thanks , for all you put into this site, I use it alot.
Cheers
Looks amazing! taste amazing!!!!! Love this recipe and my family too jajaja!
I live on my own and would love to make these. Do you think if I made a pot they could be divided into single servings and frozen?
Shannon, unfortunately, I cannot answer this with certainty as I have never tried freezing this myself – there were no leftovers left to freeze! Please use your best judgment for freezing and reheating.
Unfortunately potatoes don’t freeze well. The texture changes. Of course, you can try it with just a few and see if you like them that way!!
I’ve made many different types of tatoes in the crock pot. I’ve made this dish many times on the stove. This will be the first time I’ve done it in the crock pot. Thanks for the recipe.
will the potatoes turn out crispy? Thanks!
They will have a crisp-tender texture.
I made these for a crowd at Christmas. I was disappointed because there is no crispness to them…they turn out more like oily boiled potatoes, sorry to say. The crock pot is just too moist an environment to become crisp.
Looks amaing! I have everything in my house except baby dutch potatoes. Can you use red-skinned potatoes?
Yes, that should work just fine.
Can this recipe be doubled or tripled and what do you suggest for the cooking time. Im not a big slow cooker fan but if these taste as good as they look I may be converted!
The recipe can certainly be doubled or tripled. As for cooking time, I recommend adding an additional hour and going from there to ensure that the potatoes are completely cooked trough.
Thank you, I will definitely try this over the weekend!
I used to use my crockpot only in the summer (when it made sense because of the heat). Now I use it all the time…especially with all the great recipies from Pinterest. Maybe trying some of the recipes will change your mind. Bon Appetite!!
Making these right now! Next time I make them I think I’ll do rosemary, thyme, and garlic…my favorite combo!
Hi… Just made these tonite. Followed recipe exactly, except used small Yukon’s. Could not find the Dutch potatoes. Whole family loved them. I think I would use crushed rosemary next time instead of basil & oregano. (Did not use dill). Just a personal taste. Right before serving, sprinkled with the cheese & kosher salt. This recipe was SO easy & convenient 🙂
What size crockpot do you use?
I used a 3-qt slow cooker but any size should work just fine.
ohhhhhhhh my gosh. DELISH
You can even make your photographs look mouth-watering in a Crock Pot… I am so jealous! 🙂 These potatoes look delicious… will be making these New Years! Hope you’re having a Merry Christmas.
Will be making these for sure. Question: what are baby Dutch potatoes? Maybe a regional “thing”? They look like baby Yukon gold to me. Do you think I could use those instead? Merry Christmas!
Baby Yukon will work just fine.
Any tater will work!!
Yukon gold would work great
These look oh so yummy!
This would be even easier and quicker using canned whole potatoes rinsed and drained and added to the pot along with the herbs, etc.
The only problem is, canned potatoes are nasty tasting.
You are very rude.
I don’t think she meant to be rude cause canned potatoes do taste bad. This is a really easy way to use some fresh herbs and a bag of fresh small potatoes!! I bet it will turn out great. Good Cooking ya’ll!
Oh I don’t think she was rude. It’s a fact that canned and powdered potatoe just do not taste the same.
OK in. A stew or soup perhaps if you are desperate. 🙂
No, you are very touchy.
Not rude – canned potatoes are gross.
guess what………………this person and every other one in america and canada where i am from have the freedom of speech, meaning they can say anything they like. including saying that canned potatoes are nasty. youre lucky she was so polite. and if you dont like what she said, move on. shes giving people a recipe for Gods sake, not teaching people english. comment on the subject at hand. youre lucky i m not saying what i would like to right now…………………..if you dont like something, its your issue.
thank you karin!! I have always said that. if something bothers you- its probably YOUR issue
Karin you keep saying that she is lucky because you and the person who commented “aren’t saying what you really want to.” I want to know why you both feel that freedom of speech I’d the equivalent of the freedom to be rude and childish. You also talked about her having a personal problem because she was offended and yet your comment clearly displays aggravation. You are correct you do have freedom of speech. What you do not have is common decency or good manners.
While people have the right to free speech in many areas, this is a comment section of a blog so the speech can be regulated by its ‘owner’ according to universally applied terms for all participants. In most areas however, while people retain freedom of speech that does not guarantee freedom from others judgment when they exersize that. Some may agree, others may not. If you put yourself out there you invite scrutiny which may mean dissent as well as agreement.
It is my experience that it’s usually better to present things as a personal preference/opinion as opposed to a universal truth. For example “I prefer fresh potatoes to canned.” No one can argue with this as it’s your personal opinion and you have not tried to speak for others. They may present another opinion, but all you’ve done is speak for yourself. Where you step into difficult territory is insulting others who may not have access to fresh vegetables and rely upon canned either due to availability or cost. Fresh vegetables are more expensive, require different preparation and storage. What seems exceptionally easy to some may be prohibitive to others. It’s best not to judge others or assume everyone has the same advantages you do. Few would outwardly do so knowingly, but statements such as that can have that effect. Finally, just because you can say something and you feel others should simply get over it doesn’t mean you always need to, and it doesn’t always reflect on others. It’s called self awareness.
Just my opinion, and in exersizing my free speech clearly I’ve opened myself up to scrutiny.
It’s true we do have the freedom to express our opionions without fear of government retaliation. The government can’t jail us or kill us for speaking our minds. However, we are not free of the consequences of what we say. So if what a person says upsets someone else, they have the right to be offended and respond. They have the same rights. BTW, I am not fond of canned potatoes either but that’s a personal preference.
Guess what—the rude person who said canned potatoes are nasty IS NOT the person who provided the recipe. She was just someone who had to make a rude comment about another person’s suggestion. And also guess what—being able to speak freely doesn’t mean you should pit out any rude thought without filter. And if you do, guess what—don’t be surprised if someone calls you on it. ♀️
She is not being rude. Canned potatoes are sitting in water so flavour is yucko! Couldn’t be easier than buying a bag of mini potatoes & throwing them in the slow cooker. Easy peasy!!
Sarah, you were not rude. Just stating a fact. Have a great day.
The ones I tried were not nasty tasting, they were devoid of flavour but the texture was unpleasant.
Totally agree! Canned potatoes are discussing!
Canned potatoes vs real fresh potatoes
is like canned spinach vs fresh just picked spinach.
Your comment was rude. There are many nicer ways to express that opinion. Obviously, you chose not to use any.
I was looking for a good roasted potatoe for my slow cooker and this sounds great but what I was shocked at was conversation that start in 2014 on real potatoes vs canned potatoes and people were still commenting about being rude 3yrs later.
Sooo funny.
I must be the only one who likes canned potatoes! Fresh whole potatoes are best but I don’t think there is anything wrong with canned potatoes. I just might make these Christmas day with canned potatoes.
Why on earth have I never thought of doing this. Perfect for a healthy, whole food side dish! =) YUM
What a novel way to prepare potatoes! I’ll be making them this week. I’m dreaming of some new variations too. Thanks for the inspiration.
Thank you Chungah for the nice and easy recipe. Happy Holidays.
